Auto Motor und Sport: BMW M5 vs Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG

I wouldnt say focus on little comfort, there is a lot of comfort in M5, much more than M5 E39 and compared to other sportcars. Comfort is on pair with 545i if you ask me.
However, E63 has better comfort but it doesnt mean M5 dont have much comfort.

True, I didn't mean to say that the M5 was uncomfortable, it is just that the M5 is clearly biased towards being the ultimate sports sedan. If it manages to be comfy, well, kudos to BMW then. :usa7uh:

it sounded like you said there was no comfort at all and you would have pain in the butt, back and arms after only a few minutes in the M5 :t-rot:

I have not driven the M5, so I can't comment. But I didn't intend to make it sound like the M5 was a Fred Flinstone type of car. :t-cheers:

Thanks for posting the article. I was really looking forward to a comparison test between the M5 and E63.

It seems more and more car mags now are favouring "overall/all round" performance, including aspects like comfort and practicallity when coming to a conclusion.

Well, this just confirms again that the AMG cars can be a good balance of performance and comfort. On the twisty track, I would still take the M5 in terms of driving feel and getting that little extra speed advantage. On everyday roads, the E63 and M5 will be neck and neck in terms of performance, but the difference is the E63 is more comfortable.

Like the C55/C32 comparision, the E63 seems to be a much better handling car than the E55 because of the Direct Control upgrades.:usa7uh:

It looks like Mbworlds.org biggest fear is getting true. E63 slower than E55? :t-hands:

Yup, I just posted this article on mbworld.org. All those guys care about in the E55/E63 forum is straightline acceleration. The E55 owners will LOVE this result for two reasons: the AMG won over the M car, AND it is likely that their beloved E55's are faster than the new E63.

Let's be very frank here, the E63 won and it will probably win in every comparison whether M likes it or not. Let's face it. The E63 is faster and better than the E55, so of course it is going to win. Not only that, when the M5 came out, we all knew that an upgraded E55 AMG (I may be mistaken, i am only assuming), could catch up, if not beat the M5.

I love the M5, but the naturally aspirated engines that are coming from the M division are limited in what they can do to out perform an animal that can just be forced induced. Either way, I would take the M5 over the E63, but only by a hair. The reason for this would simply be because of the SMG, and if the M5 came in 6 speed( like it does now in the US) then even more. I love spotiness and that is something that BMW has been able to accomplish.

Everyone is different, so driving the E63 may be what is right for guy A, but wrong for guy B. We all have our preferences and we all grew up driving differently. Some of us are lazy and just prefer an animal under the hood that is already tamed, others (like me :D) prefer an animal under the hood that we need to tame and drive the hell out of (m5).

I think it is safe to say that many auto mags are going to pick the E63 over the M5, just because it has that little nitch.

Conclusion

The different between these two beasts is a matter of degree, not a matter of one being better than the other.

What are you talking about, the M5 was fater and had better handling.
Do we really care about the rest ?!
And it's AMS Germany.
Even the E55 won against the M5 so for the E63 to also win was perfectly natural.
AMS Sweden on the other hand...

Also W-- is with these times ?!

If those guys draw conclusions based on one test, thay are silly!! :t-rot:

This is an interesting test. Someone already pointed out that car journalists are now looking for the "entire performance package balance", the AMG vehicle delivers yet again with it`s second victory against it`s main compeditor, the M5..

I expected better numbers from the E63!

This is the first test where speeds are compared. I can`t wait for Road&Track to compare these two. Thay come up with excellent numbers from off the line starts. Car&Driver Burns too much rubber off the line, this is why thay have the best times. No one in the real world burns rubber off the start.

No my friend, the M5 was lighter not fatter? :D

I actually didn't read the article because I can't read German, but from what I took, I thought the E63 was faster. Either way, I was going on the rationale of the E63 being faster since it has more power. I was arguing that it is a matter of degree and nothing else. Preference plays an important role in picking a car. Look, I don't have to repeat what I wrote, please re-read what I wrote.

The AMG won cause it's an all rounder.
Performance and handling and sport car feeling is BMWs turf.
Ofcourse no matter what german magazines tell you about how great is to be an all rounder, brand building books will always tell a it's better to have a diferentiation factor at witch to excel.
Not that that there's something wrong with all rounder cars form MB, BMW or Audi.

That is basically what I said in the first post. I think MB is a well rounded car and that is probably why it won, however, I would probably pick the M5 because it is so much fun to drive.

It is interesting that car magazines are going to this whole "well rounded" idea rather than the one that is the most fun to drive. Who knows what will happen in the future.

M cars isnt about the best overall performance package or ultimate luxury, its about sport and they use the slogan "ultimate driving machine". So they have to cut on somethings to stay "the ultimate driving machine" and M buyers arent asking for BMW to build the ultimate luxury car. And BMW certainly isnt going to change their philosophy just to win carcomparions. M cars will sell anyway and people will still buy them. If BMW started to built comfortable luxury cars, M would lose a lot of customers.

If BMW started to built a comfortable luxury M cars instead of sport, then I wouldnt be a M enthusiast anymore and it would lose its charisma.

I once heard, AMG is luxury with touch of sport and M is sport with a touch of luxury. Thats sound alright to me :)

I think the best analogy for this would be to consider the many different types of foods that are out there. Fast food may sell better, but italian food is special and certain people eat it because they want the taste and smell of Italian food. So, one night you may feel like Italian and may want to go eat it, just because it is Italian and that is what you have come to expect. You would never expect Italian food to be put out in the market as fast food in order to compete with McDonalds and Burger King. I think the same goes for BMW and MB. BMW is truly "The Ultimate Driving Machine." This idea has enabled BMW to never forget what their purpose is. They truly have stuck to it, no matter what and you are right in this aspect of you assertion Just Me. Each car brand will give the customer something they have come to expect. That is why certain people will go for Audi's while others will go for BMW. Even though at times they may compete, every single car is unique in its own way presenting what has been the philosophy and legacy of the brand.

BMW will stick to sporty interiors and sporty handling and that is what BMW has come to be known as. Same goes for MB with luxury. Only in the last decade have we seen the criss cross between segments. BMW has shown that it can make luxury cars, but in the end many may prefer MB. Audi on the other hand has attempted and has been successful in showing a middle ground between MB and BMW. So, its is basically up to the consumer what he wants.

Well said. :usa7uh:

Like I said, AMS isn't that serious about 0-60 times, because that is not what sells cars in Europe. A balanced car is what people want. In this comparison, the E63 AMG came across to them as the more realistic choice from a daily driving point of view. That's all. Sport would be the M5's strength, especially on the track.

And I suspect that the E63 AMG will be much quicker than the E55 AMG. Both AMG E-Classes essentially weighed the same, but the E63 AMG has more horsepower (should have a higher top speed if not limited) and a 7-speed transmission. The E55 AMG's only trump cars is its torque advantage, which admitedly aids acceleration. Still, my gut tells me the E63 AMG will own it. ;)

You know, this is the 3rd time now that the E60 M5 has lost to an AMG product in recent magazine reviews. To me, it is a bit of a surprise, as BMW M cars have historically dominated comparison tests with their AMG equivalents.

Evo picked the CLS55 AMG over the M5.
Automobile picked the E63 over the M5.
And now Auto Motor Und Sport also picked the E63 over the M5.

Of course, the M5 has won some too (Car, Motortrend and Car & Driver picked the M5 over the CLS55 AMG).

It just shows that all this doesn't matter.......individual buyers (and magazines) will choose based on their own personal tastes and biases.

Too bad I cant read German......

Id be very curious to see what speed a de-limited E63 is capable of????

In "fahrcomfort" (drive comfort) I see that the M5 scored better points than E63 in category "sitze vorn" (seat front) and same points in "sitze hinten" (seat back).

Does it mean they prefered the front seats in M5 over the front seats in E63?
