Drivers-View Video Shows Horrific Freeway Crash

(CBS) OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. A driver on the Long Island Expressway lives to tell an amazing story. A truck hauling municipal waste lost control and crushed the man's car between the median wall and a passenger bus.

"It's his luckiest day, his luckiest day," said Nassau County Police Sargeant Richard Conlon, who was one of the first on the scene, reports WCBS-TV's Reid Lamberty.

The westbound Long Island Expressway was closed at Exit 39 (Glen Cove Road) during the morning rush hour Wednesday after a serious crash in Nassau County. Nine people were injured in the crash and taken to area hospitals.

From beneath the twisted metal and mangled mess of what used to be an Audi TT, the driver of the car, which lay crushed between a tractor-trailer and a Classic Coach bus, wasn't seriously hurt.

"He was conscious and answering all of our questions. He knew who he was. He was coherent. He knew his name. He knew what today was, so that was a good feeling," Conlon said.

Police are still piecing together details of what happened, but the driver of the 18-wheeler through an interpreter said he was in the middle lane when he saw brake lights.

"He slowed down, but as soon as he put the brakes on the truck just went to the left. The steering wheel - he couldn't control it - did not respond to go to the right," the interpreter said.

With the steering wheel locked, the truck veered left, catching the car and dragging it until they came to a rest against the barrier. A passenger bus also got tangled in the mess. The bus was carrying parents of Suffolk County students en route to a performance at NYU in Manhattan.

Five people on the bus were treated for minor injuries. The driver of the truck hurt his thumb, but relief came when he saw the driver of the Audi conscious and moving.

"He was relieved when the guy survived," the interpreter said.

The driver of the car was evacuated by medivac helicopter to Nassau University Medical Center, where he was listed in "satisfactory" condition.

Police are investigating the cause of the accident.

OMG Yannis, this video has been playing constantly on all the news shows here in the U.S.
The video is terrifying...the man in the TT never saw it coming because the 18-wheeler is almost abreast of the car when it swerves over. Then the TT gets pancaked from the rear by a bus. It is a miracle this guy is alive.
I've heard that the TT's cabin maintained it's structure- tho the pics I've seen it looks like a mangled mess. Incredible.

I am absolutely amazed the driver wasn't seriously injured or killed, he was one very lucky guy.

WOW That guy is so lucky... That is an amazing survival for a wicked accident.

Wholey Crap... how do you survive that ??!!

That is an absolute miracle. I guess he's kind of fortunate he was driving a TT coz of the low seating position, but wow... that's just amazing.

I guess Audi would be happy that the guy survived too, coz this is good publicity for Audi, and especially the TT. (I know, I sound cold-hearted talking about money when a person's life is involved)...but if you think about it.. new TT is coming soon, this is a testiment to Audi TT safety. :eusa_clap

yes it is all over the U.S. the gut went on and on abou how it was te safety of the TT that saved him

LOL, that's because he works for Audi ;)

Yea, I seen this on the news too. Very lucky guy!

BTW, that camera should be a must in new cars. Think about it, it will record everything that happened and it will make it easier to figure out who was at fault.

well you got to admit theres not many cars that can save there drivers for getting crushed by a semi is there,;)

I am glad he lived. But that is the chance we all take in our sports cars.

Move over Volvo... we have a new King of Safety (in the eyes of the general public that is).

Those pics make it even more of a disbelief that he survived. Had the car not been a roadster, I'd say he would have died or as a bare minimum had serious injuries.

Audi AG is a German automotive manufacturer of luxury vehicles headquartered in Ingolstadt, Bavaria, Germany. A subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, the company’s origins date back to the early 20th century and the initial enterprises (Horch and the Audiwerke) founded by engineer August Horch (1868–1951). Two other manufacturers (DKW and Wanderer) also contributed to the foundation of Auto Union in 1932. The modern Audi era began in the 1960s, when Volkswagen acquired Auto Union from Daimler-Benz, and merged it with NSU Motorenwerke in 1969.
