Audi R8 Spider: the lowdown

Audi is lopping the top off its R8 supercar - and CAR Online has the exclusive proof. This official design sketch leaked from the company's Ingolstadt design studios shows exactly how the open-air R8 will look when it goes on sale in 2009. It follows our scoop on the Audi A1 yesterday, and we have more Audi news to come tomorrow.

This drawing reveals the R8 targa for the first time, with twin speedster humps incorporating breathing vents for the mid-engined V8 behind the two-seater cockpit. The doors are deeply scalloped, as on the coupe, but this time there's a shortened, stumpier aluminium-look blade just ahead of the rear wheels. Tone down the cartoony feel of this sketch (just look at the liquorice-wrapped, deeply dished alloys) and this is the final production car.

This picture confirms CAR Magazine's scoop (October 2006) that the R8 will have removable targa panels, rather than a space-gobbling removable fabric roof or folding hard-top. Fact is, most buyers of this £85k roadster will live in hotter climes like Florida, where a fiddly targa top won't be a problem.

Powering the R8 Spider will be the same 4.2-litre V8 that you'll find in the RS4 and R8 tin-top. It's a high-revving, naturally aspirated V8 mustering 414bhp - easily enough to make the lightweight, alumnium R8 a very capable sports car indeed. And this targa version is aimed squarely at open-top versions of the 911.

There's more change in store for the R8. Audi is planning to drop in the V10 from its donor car, the Lamborghini Gallardo, which will give the R8 sufficient poke (500bhp+) that its four-wheel drive chassis has always cried out for.

It's all part of Audi's continuing plan to leapfrog BMW and Mercedes to become the world's biggest premium car maker by 2015. Niche-filling is the name of the game, as the company targets 1.5 million sales a year, so expect derivatives galore...

Re: CAR MAGAZINE - Audi R8 Spider

Awesome. The thick shoulders give an impression of a wide body.

Mirror's on the Windowframe :usa7uh: reminds me of Zonda

Re: CAR MAGAZINE - Audi R8 Spider

It looks great ...and I already love the R8.

But here's my confusion: if Porsche is not happy with Bugatti encroaching on their supercar territory, then why on earth is Audi starting to wade into Porsche's mainstream market -- and possibly affecting Lamborghini too?

Typical VAG behaviour... What else can we expect? :D

1991 Audi Quattro Spyder Concept

Audi made sensation in 1991 when they unveiled the Quattro Spyder Concept at Frankfurt Motor Show. The concept was a flat sports coupé with a V6 mid-engine and a spectacular aluminium body.
The Quattro Spyder was powered by a V6 engine, installed transversely behind the seats, with an output of 174 bhp. This mid-engine concept ensures that weight is distributed optimally.
The aluminium body is 20 - 40 percent lighter than a comparable steel body. That is why the vehicle only weighs 1100 kilograms.
Initially there were rumors that the concept will go into production and Audi dealers received hundreds of enquiries. But in the end, only two prototypes were constructed.

^^That's a great looking little car Sikorsky ...a pity they never put in into production.

They dropped it for the TT.
The Quattro spider had a mid mounted 2.8 litre V6 engine with Quattro.
I think if Audi had put the spider drivetrain in the TT body it would be a better performing car.
Rekon how good the TT Mk2 would become with a evolution of that mid engined layout. ;)
It would out perform the Cayman S, with a 300 hp Audi 3.2 V6 FSI Valve-Lift engine it would be a great drivers car.

re: Audi R8 Spider (Spy pics & info)

I think thats what that car should have been in the first place. The pic only proves it. It looks awesome as a Roadster!

re: Audi R8 Spider (Spy pics & info)

Alex,

Does it remind you of the Porsche Carrera GT?

....because that is what I immediately thought of when I first saw it.

re: Audi R8 Spider (Spy pics & info)

i am not really a fan of the r8 and the tt.........but that r8 spyder look ACE....but the rims make it look a bit odd...it would look good with a pair of the new rs6 rims(y)......and personally i think the that audi quattro spyder looks a bit like the koenigsegg cc8s

Preview: 2009 Audi R8 Spider

Last month an official drawing of the R8 Spider was leaked, revealing that designers are opting for a removable targa-style roof rather than a complicated and space-consuming folding hardtop or fabric roof. Apart from the missing top, other major changes for the new Spider are the two vented roadster style bumps behind each seat feeding cold air to the engine and the truncated aluminum side blades.
The placement of the fuel filler cap will also be changed due to the missing rear pillars, while changes under the sheetmetal will likely include extra chassis strengthening, adding to the car’s kerb weight. Because of this, top speed will likely be lower than the coupe’s 301km/h rating.
Audi plans to begin sales of the R8 Spider in 2009 with the same 4.2L V8 churning out 420hp as the RS4 and R8 Coupe. Following the arrival of the new R8 Spider, Audi is expected to launch a new RS prepped version of the super-coupe that’s likely to be called the Rs-R8.

Audi R8 Convertible Rumor Emerges

It seems whenever there is some hot car floating around out there, rumors begin to fly about how the automaker plans to keep that car fresh in everyone's mind. The Audi R8 is no different.

Speculation has been out for quite some time that Audi was considering an R8 convertible. Audi has certainly not confirmed this to anyone. Certainly not helping matters is the belief that Audi will make a pretty strong unveiling at the LA Auto Show in a few days.

In response to the rumors, or possibly fueling them, some new renderings of a proposed R8 Spider have been floating around a few web sites. We stumbled upon these at Autogespot. They have a few more Photoshops on their sites.

One thing is for sure: we will be waiting (im)patiently at the Audi stand on November 14th at 11:10am California time when they begin their presentation to the media.

Audi Super Bowl Ad Details Emerge

Details are beginning to emerge about the Audi R8 Super Bowl ad set for February 3rd. The occassion, which could have cost Audi as much as $6 million for the airtime alone, is being marketed by a new web site promoting the debut. The commercial is also being speculated as a potential debut for the Audi R8 Spyder, but there has been no confirmation of that from Audi.

Audi has produced a 60-second commercial featuring Alex Rocco, the actor who played Moe Greene in The Godfather. Styled like the film, the spot will likely immitate the scene where Michael Corleone tries to buy out an indignant Greene's stake in a Las Vegas casino.

According to Audi's press release, they "selected The Godfather as a thematic foundation for its Super Bowl ad because the film expresses the idea of a new power rising in an established hierarchy."

The character of Moe Greene was shot through the eye while receiving a massage during a legendary scene in the Oscar-winning film.

Published reports state that the Audi ad will air during the first quarter of the Super Bowl. By signing up on the Audi of America site dedicated to the ad, users will have a chance to see the commercial before it airs, likely at 10:18pm Greenwich Mean Time on February 3rd. This is more than an hour before the game is scheduled to begin.

Audi's decision to air the advert is not so much to sell the R8, but to further position the automaker as a top luxury vehicle producer.

Depending on who you ask, last year's Super Bowl was watched by anywhere between 93 and 145 million people, 97.9% of which were in North America. However, if you are not from the States, you might be unaware that there are two stories U.S. media heavily report around America's football championship: the game itself, and the advertisements shown during the game.

This year's Super Bowl is being broadcast on Fox, which means that when U.S. viewers are not being bombarded by promos for Fox programming, they will see 30 minutes of new television spots. The advertisers dream is for one of their commercials to be endlessly repeated on news reports across the States, with the spot becoming the focus of water-cooler conversation long after the game is finished. 24 years later, people still talk about the 1984 Apple Macintosh commercial that aired nationally for the first (and only) time during the Big Game in '84.

That is why 30 seconds of advertising during the 2008 Super Bowl will cost as much as $3 million. It is a calculated risk made by companies trying to milk as much aftermath publicity and word-of-mouth as possible.

And in Audi's case, to hopefully ascend to the height of supremacy over all luxury automakers.

AUDI PUTS OLD LUXURY ON NOTICE WITH SUPER BOWL AD

AUBURN HILLS, Mich., January 22, 2008 – Audi of America Inc. will boldly declare its intention to redefine luxury in the automotive segment with its first Super Bowl ad in nearly 20 years, the company said today. The 60-second ad, which was inspired by the Oscar-winning film “The Godfather,” is critical to connecting with luxury vehicle customers. In addition to the creative content associated with the epic film, the ad features prominent placement of the Audi R8, the brand’s first mid-engine sports car.

Audi’s return to the Super Bowl was preceded by a record year for sales in the United States. The automaker sold 93,506 vehicles in the US in 2007, a 3.8% increase over the previous year. Audi selected “The Godfather” as a thematic foundation for its Super Bowl ad because the film expresses the idea of a new power rising in an established hierarchy.

"With record sales in 2007 and the launch of a host of new products in 2008, the Audi brand is at the single most exciting point in its history,” said Scott Keogh, chief marketing officer, Audi of America. “We chose ‘The Godfather’ to anchor our Super Bowl ad because, at its core, the film is about a struggle between old and new power. In precisely that fashion, Audi represents the rise of a new force in luxury.”

Audi’s advertising agency, Venables Bell & Partners created the ad, which was shot on location at the Fleur de Lys house in Los Angeles. The 60-second spot will air only twice on television. The debut will come in the first quarter of the Super Bowl, while a 30-second version will air the following day.

Actor Alex Rocco, who portrayed the character of Moe Greene in the first “Godfather,” will be starring in the ad. Audi last advertised during the Super Bowl in 1991.

On the day of the game, Audi guests who have previously opted-in on Audi of America > Home will have the opportunity to view the spot early on a separate, dedicated web site. That web site will also host additional footage from the filming and production of the ad.

Audi will support their Super Bowl ad with an on-the-ground presence in the game’s host city of Phoenix, AZ. Audi is creating a temporary installation of the Audi Forum, which currently exists in many of the world’s major cities, including London, Tokyo, Singapore and New York. The Audi Forum Phoenix will be a haven for VIP and celebrity guests, incorporating tailored programming and experiences throughout the week.

re: Audi R8 Spider (Spy pics & info)

Too bad nobody is going to be watching the superbowl because the god damn giants are in it as the sacrificial offering for the Pats.

I'll watch it though just to see this commercial.
