Audi CEO confirms Q8 SUV, will launch by 2020

A new Audi Q7 was long overdue, having been on the market since late 2005. Ingolstadt obliged and premiered the all-new, second-generation model at the recent Detroit Auto Show.

Its main feature is that it has shed more than 700 pounds (325 kg) compared to its predecessor thanks to a new chassis and the extensive use of light materials throughout.

Audi CEO Rupert Stadler, however, went on the record saying that the German manufacturer is “working heavily” on an even bigger SUV, dubbed Q8, that will be aimed mainly at markets where such vehicles are in high demand, like the US, China and the Middle East.

Stadler told Bloomberg during an interview that a bigger SUV, which will sit at the top of the range above the Q7, “would strengthen the brand. I’m convinced we need the car by 2020.”

The US is of special interest to Audi, as it trails market leader BMW and second-place Mercedes- Benz by selling half as much models as they do. In the near future, Stadler forecast that high-end vehicles will increase their market share, from today’s 10 percent to 13 percent.

He also sees no reason why, by strengthening the brand’s portfolio, they can’t outsell their rivals: “We did it in China, we did it in Europe. Why shouldn’t it happen in the US at some point?”

Nevertheless, Audi’s range-topping SUV will have to face strong competition in the luxury SUV niche. Bentley, which like Audi belongs to the VW Group, will launch the Bentayga, Jaguar the F-Pace, Maserati the Levante and BMW the X7, all of which are expected to beat the Q8 to the showrooms.

Q6 electric coming in 2018
Audi has announced the Q8 is scheduled to go on sale sometime in 2019.

Without going into any details, Audi says they will add a new member to the SUV family and will sit on top of the Q range. It will be one of the new models "to provide a solid foundation for the Audi Group's growth path." The company’s R&D boss Ulrich Hackenberg has already promised the Q8 will be more "coupe-like" than the Q7 and it will have a more emotional and sporty design influenced by the Prologue concept.

Another model to join the ever growing Audi lineup is going to be a baby crossover called Q1 which has already been teased and confirmed for next year's launch.

Audi also plans to introduce a "sporty SUV with electric drive in the upper mid segment" in 2018 and chances are the model in question is the Q6. It will allegedly be based on the second-gen Q7 and should have a 100 kWh battery pack providing enough juice for a range of at least 310 miles (500 km)before recharging.

Will be a "Q7 Coupe"
Audi’s first ever Q8 model has been digitally imagined ahead of a 2019 confirmed launch.

Ingolstadt's belated answer to the BMW X6 is currently in the works and is being described by Audi's R&D chief Ulrich Hackenberg as a coupe version of the Q7 featuring a more sporty and emotional design. Speaking of which, it will use the new styling language that debuted last year with the Prologue concept so expect to see a sleeker body as depicted in the attached unofficial illustration. As a side note, the first production car to use the Prologue look will be the next generation A8 slated to come out in 2017.

The more sloped roofline of the Audi Q8 means the SUV will have less rear headroom than the Q7 and it will also come with a smaller trunk. It will be more than five meters long and will weigh somewhere in the region of 2,000 kg (4,409 lbs) for the base version.

It will obviously be based on the second generation Q7 from where it will inherit the engine lineup. BMW has the X6 M so we won't be too surprised to see an RS Q8 version packing an upgraded iteration of today's V8 twin-turbo 4.0-liter engine and there could also be a high-powered diesel version with an e-turbo in the same vein as the upcoming Audi SQ7.

It's too early to talk about pricing, but obviously it will be more expensive than the equivalent Q7 which in Germany begins at €60,900 for the entry-level 3.0 TDI variant.

2018 Audi Q8 - high-tech SUV to top Q range
Audi will take on the BMW X6 and Range Rover Sport with a plush, high-tech five-seater that will top an SUV line-up set to expand to eight models

Audi is set to extend its line-up with a luxurious new SUV called the Q8. The new five-seat SUV will go into production in just over two years’ time.

The Q8 will be positioned at the top of the German car maker’s burgeoning SUV lineup.

It is set to go head to head with the likes of the BMW X6, Mercedes-Benz GLE and Range Rover Sport at a starting price of around £55,000 for the most affordable model, a Q8 3.0 TDI, in the UK.

The Q8 is one of seven new SUV models currently under development at Audi and scheduled for launch before the end of the decade.

It joins the all-new Q2, successor models to today’s Q3 and Q5, a new Q1 and Q4, and the all-electric Q6, which has already been previewed by the Audi e-tron quattro concept at last year’s Frankfurt motor show.

The intensive focus on SUV models in Ingolstadt comes after recent worldwide sales figures revealed that every third car sold by Audi hails from its existing line-up of Q models.

The Q8 will be a sister model to the Q7 and share its mechanical package. The new flagship SUV is set to go on sale during the second half of 2018 with an extended range of petrol, diesel and hybrid powertrains.

These include a secret new plug-in petrolelectric system that is being developed in partnership with Porsche and is claimed to give the Q8 an all-electric range of up to 31 miles.

High-tech options

Among the new Audi’s arsenal of options will be many of the advanced systems being developed for the upcoming fourth-generation A8, such as a 48-volt electric system, OLED high-definition digital displays and the very latest in autonomous driving functions.

Stylistically, the Q8 is said to depart quite radically from the current Q7. Insiders say it eschews the upright stance of its sibling for a much more rakish shape developed by Audi design boss Marc Lichte.

Among the new model’s more distinguishing design features is a broad eight-corner single-frame grille that houses a series of vertical chrome strips — an element that will become a strong design signature on many future Audi models, Lichte has previously told Autocar.

As with the upcoming Q4 and Q6, the Q8 adopts a five-door layout, with four conventional front-hinged doors for entry to the cabin and a large liftbackstyle tailgate for access to its luggage compartment.

Sources privy to an early design model that was revealed to Audi officials in January confirm the Q8 is close to the Q7 in both length and width, at 5050mm and 1970mm respectively.

However, a more sporting roofline reduces the Q8’s height by some 50mm over its more practical sibling, at around 1690mm. By comparison, the Mercedes GLE is 4900mm long, 2000mm wide and 1700mm tall, while the Range Rover Sport has respective dimensions of 4850mm, 1985mm and 1780mm. Development of the fourwheel-drive Q8 originally kicked off early last year under the watch of Audi’s former R&D boss, Ulrich Hackenberg.

Following his resignation in the wake of the Dieselgate emissions scandal that has engulfed parent company Volkswagen, the project has since been taken under the wing of Audi’s new R&D chief, Stefan Knirsch.

Light-weight platform

As with the Q7, the Q8 is based around the latest evolution of Audi’s MLB platform, complete with a 2990mm wheelbase.

Reflecting the Q8’s more sporting brief, Ingolstadt insiders say it is also in line to receive track widths that extend beyond the Q7’s, which are 1680mm at the front and 1690mm at the rear.

As with the Q7, the body structure of the Q8 is set to make extensive use of aluminium in a bid to push lower-end models below the 2000kg mark.

Further weightsaving measures include the selected used of carbonfibre in non-load-bearing structures, as seen on the R8. Among the engines destined for the Q8 will be a new range of V6 and V8 petrol units.

These are currently in the final stages of development in a joint venture between Audi and Porsche that carries the internal codename KoVoMo (derived from the German words ‘Konzern Vee Otto Motoren’). They are also set to be used by Bentley and Volkswagen.

The new V6 and V8 are based around a shared 90deg architecture and will feature a common 500cc individual cylinder capacity, suggesting sizes of 3.0 litres and 4.0 litres.

Due to replace Audi’s and Porsche’s current V6 and V8 petrol units, the new engines will feature gasdriven turbochargers in the first stage of production.

Hybrid powertrains

However, insiders have hinted that electric turbocharging, supported by the Q8’s 48V electrical system, may be introduced at a later date.

The KoVoMo engine is claimed to be at the centre of a secret new plug-in petrolelectric hybrid system tipped for introduction on the Q8 and the third-generation Porsche Cayenne.

It is likely to be one of two hybrid systems offered on the new Audi, joining the diesel-electric system already announced for the Q7.Of greater importance to the UK market will be the diesel engine range.

Included among the launch line-up will be at least two variants of Audi’s familiar 3.0-litre V6 oil-burner.

Also planned is a sporting SQ8 model with the advanced triple-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 diesel recently revealed in the SQ7. Inside, the Q8 is set to receive a reworked version of the Q7’s excellent cockpit, featuring a more driverorientated middle console.

Unlike the seven-seat Q7, though, the Q8 will be available with a five-seat layout only.

As part of a comprehensive connectivity package, Audi is working on providing overthe-air updates for future incarnations of its MMI (Multi Media Interface) system.

These include real-time navigation updates via the ‘Here’ system being developed in a joint venture with BMW and Mercedes-Benz parent company Daimler.

The Q8 is scheduled to be built at Volkswagen’s Bratislava plant in Slovakia alongside the current Q7 and the successor models to the existing second-generation Cayenne and Volkswagen Touareg, due out next year.

Audi Q8 test mule spied wearing Q7 bodyshell

Expected to debut in late 2017, probably at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the 2018 Audi Q8 will one-up the Q7 full-size SUV with a coupe-like bodyshell, more luxury, and lots of hi-tech goodies.

2012 was the first time Audi sort of confirmed the Q8, the German manufacturer promised that the upcoming model will be a more upmarket proposition than the Q7 full-size luxury SUV that won’t overstep the Bentley Bentayga and the not-yet-ready-for-production Lamborghini Urus SUV.

Ulrich Hackenberg, the former technical chief at Audi AG, declared that the Q8 ”will be something new, following designs established on the Prologue concept. It will be positioned as something more emotional and more sporty than the Q7 [...] the Q8 will be more coupe like." Need I say anything more? I’ll state the obvious: Audi is doing exactly what BMW did with the X5/X6.

Our spy photographers caught the 2018 Audi Q8 doing its thing in Spain and, as you can tell from the pictures to the right, this is but a chassis mule wearing the body shell of a Q7. The thing is, this mule boasts a wider track, indicated by the wider fenders. The wheelbase, on the other hand, appears to be unchanged. These said, bear in mind that the Q8 will look very outlandish.

The upcoming Q8 will have a totally different body shell, one garnished with a styling language of its own. Other than the Prologue concept-inspired cues, just think of the Audi Q8 as the high-riding sibling of the Audi A7. The front end will resemble a lot of that from the new Audi A8 full-size luxury sedan that is also testing in pre-production prototype form right now.

As a sister model to the Q7, the Q8 will ride on the Volkswagen Group's MLB 2 platform and share most of its mechanical package. The new flagship SUV with coupe-ish looks is set to go on sale sometime in 2018 with an extended range of petrol, diesel, and hybrid powertrains. Some of those engine options are the new V6 and V8 mills developed together with the peeps at Porsche.

And yes, the same goes for the new plug-in petrol-electric system that has been co-developed with Porsche. In Audi Q8 e-tron 3.0 TDI quattro guise, the Q8 is expected to pride itself on an electric range of 35 miles (56 km) or so.

That certanly looks good... First german SAC that does not SUCK from the side profile.

**SIGH**...and the truly scrumptious Prologue Concept Coupe in the backround. Alas, I have resigned myself to a feeling of disappointment that the D5 A8 will be devoid of so much that makes the Prologue so enticing. I am now focusing my hopes on the A6 and A7 successors.

Holy crap at the horrid grille.

Single frame design completely out of control now.

"Lock your children away or this Audi is going to eat them."
Is this the message of the grill design? :eek.doodle:

That grill! The understated beauty of Audi destroyed!

It's becoming a parody right now.

Why can't they go back to this:

audi-1-2396258700621323728.webp

I swear, this is so much better than these crazy single frame designs they started. Really, we've seen them now. Time to move on, yeah?

They wil get back. They are already doing it. I think they will begin stretching it until it gets less vertical and becomes wider

I predict it is going to end up looking similar to MB grille.

Audi AG is a German automotive manufacturer of luxury vehicles headquartered in Ingolstadt, Bavaria, Germany. A subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, the company’s origins date back to the early 20th century and the initial enterprises (Horch and the Audiwerke) founded by engineer August Horch (1868–1951). Two other manufacturers (DKW and Wanderer) also contributed to the foundation of Auto Union in 1932. The modern Audi era began in the 1960s, when Volkswagen acquired Auto Union from Daimler-Benz, and merged it with NSU Motorenwerke in 1969.
