2016 Audi Q1 to be offered with all-wheel drive after all - report

Could be launched in early 2016

New details are starting to emerge about the Audi Q1.
Auto Express is reporting the model will ride on a shortened version of the MQB platform which will be shared with the Volkswagen Polo. Overall, it is expected to measure approximately 4,000mm long, 1,750mm wide and 1,570mm tall.
Engine options remain unconfirmed but the magazine says petrol choices will include a 1.0-liter three-cylinder, a 1.2-liter four-cylinder and a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder that cranks out 200 HP (147 kW) in the SQ1. We can also expect a couple of diesels including a 1.4- and 1.6-liter TDI. There could also be a plug-in hybrid variant - with a 1.4-liter TFSI and an electric motor - that produces a combined maximum output of 204 HP (150 kW) and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) of torque.
The engines will reportedly be connected to a six-speed manual or a new 10-speed DSG gearbox. Front-wheel drive will be standard but all-wheel drive could be optional.
If everything pans out, the entry-level Q1 could be priced from £16,000 ($25,715 / €18,675) when it is launched in early 2016.

Does the world really need a FWD Audi A1 with higher ground clearance? It's understandable that Audi would like to explore new niches but this is splitting hairs. The temptations for creating a car like this must have come from the success of the Mini CountryMan and Nissan Qasqai which fantastically affordable to millions of people who cannot afford a real SUV.

Rendering – Entry-level Audi Q1 mini SUV launching in 2016

Late last year, Audi confirmed that it will introduce a new entry-level crossover called the Audi Q1 in 2016. These renderings show you what the Q1 could look like.

The Audi Q1 is confirmed to launch in 2016.

Audi announced that the Q1 will be based on the MQB Platform. This rendering imagines the length of the Q1 to be 4.15 meters, about 24 cm shorter than the Q3, which is the current entry-level Q model for Audi. In order to make use of all its length, the Q1 seen in these renderings, has minimum front and rear overhangs. The profile and stance of the SUV is similar to the Q3.

The Q1 will be powered by TFSI and TDI engines outputting between 85 and 150 hp, while transmission options will include manual and DSG automatic gearboxes.

The Q1 will create a new segment in India when it launches.

The Q1, when launched in India, will create a new segment, as competitors, Mercedes-Benz and BMW, have not announced plans to launch products below the GLA and X1 respectively.

The Q1 is confirmed to enter production at Audi’s Ingolstadt plant in Germany come 2016. The small crossover is one of eleven all new models planned until 2020. Models like the Q1 will help Audi achieve its sales goal of 2 million units/annum by 2020.

SQ1 TDI also rumored
According to a recent report, Audi is developing a high-performance RS Q1.

Set to be based on the 2016 Q1, the model is slated to feature a 2.0-liter TFSI four-cylinder engine that develops 300 PS (220 kW) and 380 Nm (280 lb-ft) of torque. Consumers looking for performance and fuel efficiency won't be left out either as Autobildis reporting there will also be an SQ1 TDI that uses a twin-turbo 2.0-liter TDI engine that develops 231 PS (170 kW) and 500 Nm (368 lb-ft) of torque.

At the lower end of the spectrum, we can expect a variety of petrol and diesel engines including:

A 1.4-liter TFSI with 140 PS (103 kW) and 250 Nm (184 lb-ft) of torque
A 1.8-liter TFSI with 180 PS (132 kW) and 280 Nm (206 lb-ft) of torque
A 2.0-liter TFSI with 230 PS (169 kW) and 370 Nm (272 lb-ft) of torque
A 2.0-liter TDI with 150 PS (110 kW) and 320 Nm (236 lb-ft) of torque
A 2.0-liter TDI with 184 PS (135 kW) and 380 Nm (280 lb-ft) of torque

The 2016 Audi Q1 will be built in Ingolstadt, Germany and pricing is expected to start at roughly €25,500.

2016 Audi Q1 rendering / Automedia

Will be built in Germany
Audi confirmed plans for a Q1 back in December but now our artists have created a rendering of what the crossover could look like.

Drawing inspiration from the teaser image, the picture depicts a stylish crossover which eschews the company's traditional curves for tight lines and angular surfaces. The model also has a prominent grille which is flanked by distinctive headlights.

Audi has remained relatively tight-lipped about specifications but previous reports have suggested it could be offered with a variety of petrol and diesel engines including:

There have also been rumors about an SQ1 TDI with a twin-turbo 2.0-liter TDI engine that develops 231 PS (170 kW) and 500 Nm (368 lb-ft) of torque. If that isn't powerful enough, there could be a range-topping RS Q1 with a 2.0-liter TFSI four-cylinder engine that produces 300 PS (220 kW) and 380 Nm (280 lb-ft) of torque.

SQ1 version planned
A report issued by Auto Bild sheds some light about the upcoming Audi Q1 set to go on sale in 2016.

Audi's most affordable crossover on sale today is the Q3 which kicks off at €29,600 in Germany but the Q1 will lower the bar to around €25,000 when it goes on sale in the spring of 2016. Designed by Marc Lichte, the Audi Q1 will be based on the A3 while in terms of dimensions it will be close to the Q3 which will grow in size early 2018 when the second generation is scheduled to come out.

The baby crossover will ride on Volkswagen Group's MQB platform and will be sold with a variety of gasoline and diesel engines starting out with a 140 HP & 250 Nm 1.4 TFSI. Up next should be a 180 HP & 280 Nm 1.8 TFSI and a 230 HP & 370 Nm 2.0 TFSI. Audi will also provide a couple of 2.0 TDI engines rated at 150 HP & 320 Nm and 184 HP & 380 Nm.

The report also mentions an SQ1 packing a 2.0 TDI upgraded to 231 HP & 500 Nm while sitting on top of the range will be an RS Q1 which hasn't been approved yet for production but if it will the model is going to get 310 HP & 380 Nm.

Audi Q1 design to combine crossover, Sportback and Avant cues

8b6ab343da770dd9a5e213320b357351.webp

Coming in 2016
British media is reporting the Audi Q1 will borrow several styling cues from the company's crossover, Sportback and Avant models.

Audi has already released a teaser image announcing a new entry-level crossover called Q1 will be out in 2016 and now CARis providing some preliminary details about the subcompact crossover. It's being developed under the AU276 codename and it will have just about the same size as the three-door A3. Most of the hardware components will be inherited from the Q3 but with a shorter wheelbase and a different body.

Speaking of the body, the design was mostly completed before Marc Lichte took over as the man in charge of Audi's styling but he still managed to influence the Q1's looks by adding more cosmetic packages for what will end up being S, RS and Exclusive Line derivatives. Expect to find bigger alloy wheels, contrasting sideblades covering the C pillars, underbody protection and a prominent pointed concave finish running above the door handles from front to rear.

The silhouette of the Audi Q1 will likely be a mixture of crossover, Sportback and Avant traits while under the hood there will be familiar three- and four-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines from other MQB-based products. Plug-in hybrid, SQ1 and RS Q1 versions are in the works, with the range-topping version estimated to deliver 310 HP & 380 Nm.

It will be produced starting 2016 at home in Germany where Audi wants to manufacture approximately 70,000 cars of the Q1 on the same assembly line as the A3. The starting price should kick off at €25,000 in Germany which would make it more expensive than the three-door A3 (€22,000) but still cheaper than the Q3 (€29,600).

Audi Q1 and Junior Crossovers: Small and Even Smaller

c69a7bb0eed5372dcc86855b38ed401a.webp

We believe that small crossovers are the next big thing, so we want to tap this market before our rivals do," says a senior manager from Audi. We hear that and think, “Haven’t you already done that with the Q3? Might you tap the market even further if you build the TTQ? What else could you possibly do?” Another small crossover, the Q1, as well as an itsy-bitsy, entry-level two-door crossover — tentatively dubbed Junior.
The Q1 (shown above in our illustration) will in essence be a re-bodied, short-wheelbase Q3 to take on the BMW X1, Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class, and two-door Range Rover Evoque. The Audi Q1 will share its footprint with the A3 hatchback, but its running gear, chassis, electronic platform, and basic architecture will bear a very close resemblance to the Q3, which will grow dimensionally in its lifetime to make more room for the Q1. In an attempt to capture a more youthful appearance, the Q1 will fuse themes of crossover, Sportback, and Avant and will be finished with contrasting sideblades covering the C-pillars, big wheels, and sporty appearance packages. Inside, the instrument panel will be tilted toward the driver, and there will be simplified multimedia controls, a multifunctional head-up display, a slimmer center console, and a top-notch infotainment system.
As a member of Volkswagen’s MQB family, the Audi Q1 could easily be offered with three-cylinder engines, a plug-in hybrid powertrain, or an all-electric setup — but it won´t be. The engine lineup instead is expected to be made up of five different four-cylinders: a 140-hp, 1.4-liter turbo; a 180-hp, 1.8-liter turbo; a 230-hp, 2.0-liter turbo; and two 2.0-liter diesels. Output will range from 150 hp and 240 lb-ft of torque to 190 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque. There will also be a brawny SQ1, powered by a compression-ignition, twin-turbo four-cylinder good for 230 hp and 370 lb-ft of torque. Also in the cards but not yet approved is the RS Q1 featuring the 310-hp turbocharged four-cylinder from the TTS.
In 2016, once production of the Audi Q5 has been transferred from Ingolstadt to Mexico, the German parent plant will start building the Q1 at a rate of around 70,000 units a year on the same assembly line as the A3. Starting at less than $30,000, the Audi Q1 will go on sale in Europe in early 2016, but the U.S. won´t get it before 2018, after the larger, second-gen Q3 debuts.
Audi Junior
A couple of years after that, we should see the Junior. In a sensible world, it would wear the Q1 badge, the Q1 would wear a Q2 badge, the Q3 would stay the same, and the TTQ would come to market as Q4. But because the rights to a couple of those names are clenched in the fists of Fiat Chrysler boss Sergio Marchionne, nemesis to Volkswagen Group’s chairman Ferdinand Piech, Audi must find suitable substitutes, which is why this ultra-small crossover might be called Junior. (Remember the DKW Junior? Of course you don’t. The last of the three-cylinder bonsai sedans, the Junior rolled off of Auto Union’s line in 1963, five years before DKW bit the dust and Audi gobbled it up.)
“We still have a bit of time on our hands,” says a senior manager from Ingolstadt. “But in the end, it’s the product that matters, not the label stuck on it.” Starting at less than $23,000, the Junior is at this moment only planned as two-door model, and one of the very few sources who are familiar with the project claims that early proposals mix TTQ styling elements with overtones of the Steppenwolf concept. A two-door is a much harder sell, but Audi needs to protect the Q1 and the even more profitable Q3. A friend from the board of directors says: “By positioning the car as a sporty two-door coupe, we don’t exclude the option to add two doors at a later stage if the market really requires them. What matters more is to define the character of the crossover, which would have to be even younger and more daring than the Q1.”
Items on the wish list for the entry-level Audi Junior include a selection of fancy driver aids, best-in-class build quality, and the kind of interior appeal one has come to associate with Audi. The Junior will get Quattro all-wheel drive and Audi’s S tronic dual-clutch transmission. If built, the Junior would likely be available with two three-cylinder engines (115-hp, turbocharged 1.0-liter and a 110-hp diesel) and three four-cylinders (140- and 180-hp gas engines and a 150-hp diesel). A more powerful S variant is a possibility but not a priority.
Here, with the Junior, we see how Audi is trying to edge out its rivals. BMW has nothing smaller than the XCite in its pipeline, and Mercedes-Benz has nothing smaller than the A-Class in its plans. Audi’s right that small crossovers are the next big thing, but is there really space for a few new models below the Q3? Clearly, Audi thinks so, even if its competition doesn’t.

Audi

Audi AG is a German automotive manufacturer of luxury vehicles headquartered in Ingolstadt, Bavaria, Germany. A subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, the company’s origins date back to the early 20th century and the initial enterprises (Horch and the Audiwerke) founded by engineer August Horch (1868–1951). Two other manufacturers (DKW and Wanderer) also contributed to the foundation of Auto Union in 1932. The modern Audi era began in the 1960s, when Volkswagen acquired Auto Union from Daimler-Benz, and merged it with NSU Motorenwerke in 1969.
