There's more than meets the eye to Audi's ProloguePiloted Driving Concept that's making its debut at the 2015 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas this week.
original Prologue Concept shown in LA last November.

A quick look at Audi's release, reveals that the 597hp (605PS) and 750Nm (553.2 lb‑ft) 4.0-liter bi-turbocharged V8 is now aided by an electric motor that helps lift output to 668hp (677PS) and 950Nm (700.7 lb‑ft) of peak torque improving the large coupe's 0-100km/h (62mph) time by 0.2 seconds to 3.5 sec, while also helping drop CO2 emissions from 199g/km to 185g/km.

As the name suggests, the Prologue Piloted Driving Concept also gets the latest version of Audi's autonomous driving tech that relies on a series of systems, including the central driver assistance controller (zFAS) "that processes information gathered by the sensors to create a detailed impression of the car’s surroundings".

If it weren't for that bloody front overhang, I would find the Prologue Concept, without reservation, absolutely breathtaking. I was hoping that VAG would have addressed that issue with their "new" MLBEvo matrix.

If they can change those back lights then this car will be a stunner

Unfortunately a larger overhang, as stated by design chief Marc Lichte, will be a part of Audi's new design language. Lichte explained that a larger front overhang compliments the proportions of Audis better and a balance between the front and rear overhang will express 'quattro', putting more emphasis on the four wheel drive, along with the additional 'arches' above the main shoulder line as seen on the Prologue concept and the new Q7.

Tell me I didn't actually read that!

Tell me I didn't actually read that!
I think you did :P Here's is a piece from an interview with Lichte:

According to Lichte, Audis need a long front overhang. With a front-wheel-drive car you have a long bonnet and cab-forward proportions. On a rear-wheel-drive car you have a short front overhang and cab-backward proportions. Most designers are fighting to give their cars the proportions of a rear-wheel-drive car. They really want the length here between the A-post and front wheel – what we call the prestige gap. But at Audi we’re not. We have a longer front overhang and cab more or less in the middle for a balanced proportion.

Lichte explained that a larger front overhang compliments the proportions of Audis better and a balance between the front and rear overhang will express 'quattro', as the weight beyond the front axle will cause excessive under-steer, thereby necessitating Quattro to get the car going in the direction the driver desires.

Slight correction. :D

Perhaps a matter of personal perception:

I find that the above mentioned "Quattro-accentuated" design paradigm with a substantial front overhang is more pronounced on some MLB (and MLBEvo) models than on others. While the A4/A5 and A6/A7 appear quite acceptable for me in this particular aspect, it is rather unbecoming on the A8. And...for me, the theme doesn't work so well for me on cabriolets.

Audi Prologue Avant concept set for Geneva debut
Prologue Avant concept lays out design cues for future Audi estates and could also point towards a future range-topping A9 variant

These are the first official sketches of Audi’s Prologue Avant, which will make its global debut in Geneva next month.

Following on from last year’s Prologue concept - itself designed to preview Audi’s future design direction for the A6, A7 and A8 line-up - this Avant concept shows how the same styling theory will be rolled out across Audi’s estate range.

From these first sketches, we can see the raked-back concept will get Audi’s large hexagonal front grille, as well as its signature LED lighting designs and large front air intakes. At the rear, twin exhausts are incorporated into the rear bumper, while a modest boot-mounted spoiler can also be seen.

Speaking to Autocar at the LA motor show in November, new Audi design boss Marc Lichte said “every element” of the Prologue’s design would be used on future production models. The first model to feature the new design language will be the next A8, which is due in 2016.

The Prologue was also said to preview a future range-topping A9 model. The Prologue Avant could therefore offer clues to a future A9 Avant, taking on the likes of Mercedes-Benz’s CLS Shooting Brake.

It’s likely that the Prologue Avant will keep the same overall dimensions as the original concept, which measured 5.1 metres long and sat on 22-inch alloy wheels.

The four-wheel drive Prologue concept was powered by a 4.0-litre V8 engine producing 597bhp, and it’s unlikely Audi will have changed this for the Prologue Avant.

As with the Prologue, Audi looks set to fit the Prologue Avant's interior with a large, full-width OLED display which does away with virtually all contol buttons. The dashboard will also feature supplementary displays for multimedia functions and driver information.

The 4 passenger door configuration has the Geneva concept car giving an even clearer indication of what to expect regarding the D5 A8/S8.

Well at least they're not going to try to be something they're not.
Well I know the trend is for very short overhangs but Audis do still look well balanced.

Anyhow, it could always be worse ........much worse:

Lichte is doing a pretty good job at Audi, but I still don't see anything about his vision to get excited about. We'll have to wait and witness his real talents with the new A6, A7 & A8.

Audi Prologue Allroad concept reportedly headed to Shanghai
According to a recent report, Audi will introduce a Prologue Allroad concept at the Shanghai Motor Show.

Details are limited but Autocar is reporting the model will follow in the footsteps of the previous Prologue concepts and preview the next-generation A6 Allroad.

Little else is known about the concept but we can expect traditional Allroad styling cues including beefier bumpers, extended wheel arches and an increased ride height. Sources have also told the magazine the interior will have "more rugged looking design elements."

The Shanghai Motor Show kicks off later this month, so stay tuned for full details.
