U.S. market will be 11.4 million in 2010, Germany industry body says

VDA expects German carmakers to grow market share in North America

DETROIT (Reuters) -- The U.S. light vehicle market may only grow by 10 percent this year to 11.4 million units, less than the consensus expects, the German automotive industry association VDA warned on Monday.

"We have set our forecast intentionally lower," VDA President Matthias Wissmann told a press conference during the North American International Auto Show in Detroit's Cobo Center.

Citigroup estimates 12.5 million light vehicle sales in the United States this year, for example, following gains in December that showed further evidence of a gradual recovery.

The VDA said its members like Mercedes-Benz and BMW AG should be able to grow faster than the market as new models such as the Mercedes E-Class convertible and BMW 5 series hit showrooms and car buyers increasingly purchase clean diesels such as Volkswagen's Jetta TDI.

Diesel sales tripled to 42,000 in the U.S. last year, according to the association.

Market share gains

"German carmakers could win market share in all segments where they are present in 2009 -- from compacts through mid and full-size cars to crossovers and SUVs," Wissmann said.

He expects German carmakers to sell more than 800,000 vehicles in the United States this year, up from 763,000 in 2009.

Total market share rose 0.6 percentage points to 7.3 percent last year. In 2005, their combined market share was just 5.1 percent by comparison.
