Aston stunner unveiled in SA

26/09/2007 08:51

Mere weeks after its first unveiling at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, Aston Martin has revealed that the DBS is now available to order to local buyers.
With company head Ulrich Bez and the car piloted by Daniel Craig in the James Bond movie Casino Royale in attendance, the announcement was made at the official opening of the Aston Martin centre in Cape Town on Tuesday.
"The DBS delivers the complete driving experience and bridges the gap between our road and track cars - the DB9 and DBR9."
The Aston Martin DBS is a 6.0-litre V12-powered two-seater hand built at the company's Gaydon plant in England.
Lightweight carbon fibre body panels have shaved off more than 30 kg from the standard car's weight and this is the first road-going Aston Martin to be equipped with ceramic brakes. These brakes are said to be 12.5 kg lighter than conventional steel brakes.
The car's V12 produces 380 kW at 6 500 r/min. The company quotes a 0 - 100 km/h time of 4.3 seconds and a top speed of 302 km/h.
DBS is the latest to join the Aston Martin line-up comprising DB9 and V8 Vantage Coupe and Roadster in South Africa. However, if you'd like to lay your hands on one, the waiting list is reportedly already quite long. And as for the price, if you have to ask, you probably can't afford it

Would you believe, South Africa is purportedly the second largest Aston Martin market in the world after the UK... I heard this somewhere but can't back it up.

Are you telling us that actually you own one, but don't wanna let us know? :eusa_danc:D

I suppose it's time to ask a serious question: Am I the only person in the world whose response to this car is complete and utter indifference? I mean, up to the DB7 I used to pretty much worship every car Aston ever produced - however flawed they might have been - but whatever they've come up with since just leaves me cold. I'm not saying I find them ugly or anything, but when I look at the pics I feel nothing, nothing at all.

No, funny enough I'm with you on this one too. This jazzed up DBS loses much of the subtle elegance and pure beauty of the DB9 - which in my opinion is one of the most classically beautiful cars ever made - and now comes across as overwrought. The addition of the go-faster bits somehow detracts from the original design in a manner, curiously, quite unlike that of the XKR which benefits gloriously from some mild but effective visual enhancement.

My god man!! These are the words of the devil, how dare you speak them out loud! .. just kidding by the way.

For Aston Martn purists such as Martin who view the DBS as a clear diversion from what an Aston Martin should be... but for those of us who just love a damn great looking car the DBS is a freakin' awesome and sexy piece of machine!!

Yes it doesn't have the pure beauty of traditional AM's, but my god does it still look hott!!

Martin and MikeJ your comments here will be reviewed by the BCLC (Beautiful Car Lovers Council) to determine if what you speak is high-treason. If found guilty you will be sentenced to looking at pics and home movies of early 80's Japanese and Korean compacts in a windowless room for several days!
