So why should people buy this over a Ferrari 296 or 911 Turbo S?

Same reason you buy any car over another, because you want one. Whatever your personal preference is. For me it would be the design.

Moreover, the 296 and Turbo S are outright sports cars whereas a DB12S leans much more toward the GT class. Coupled with proportions than one can only get with a front-engined coupé, it's obvious that DB12S would be chosen if that's what the buyer was after - very different ownership and usage experience.

The Amalfi is the more obvious competitor for the DB12 IMO.
