Comparison tests AMuS & AutoBild - New VW Golf R vs Audi S3 Sportback & BMW M135i xDrive

Of course I would. Never in a million years would I take a Peugeot over a Porsche :)

But that Peugeot might be just great in it's own right. You can probably buy 2 instead of a standard Cayman.

^^ damn, almost all of them very interesting!!!
Number 3 and number 9 stand out to me!!

Sport Auto BMW235i vs Mercedes CLA 45 AMG

0-100:4.8/4.7
0-160:11.1/10.8
0-200:18.1/17.9

Hockenheim:1.15,3/1.15,5
Slalom:69.3/68.3
Total points:50/50

Remarks: They compliment the engine of the 235i, the engine alone would be a reason to buy it!!

Sportscars 911GT3RS 4.0 vs 991GT3

0-100:3.8/3.4
0-160:7.9/7.3
0-200:11.8/11.2
402.34m:11.75/11.37

Sachsenring:1.34,54/1.32,97

Remarks: The RS4.0 could have been a second faster because its tires couldnt reach their optimal temperature. The new GT3 didnt have that problem with its newer tires. The new GT3 felt subjectively better to control and felt more agressive and faster.

Yes, Sport Auto managed 1:33,8 with the GT3 RS 4.0 at the Sachsenring, so 1:33,5 min is possible at optimal conditions.

Many thanks RS2000!

M235i is a little beast. Love it!

New GT3 is freaking sick!

Most welcome. They also liked the old RS4.0 and found it subjectively better in "pulling power". Dont forget the old RS4.0 doesnt have the 4wheel steering and PDK, nor has it the latest tires.

Just noticed that CAR magazine has tested the M235i against the Cayman, have yet to read it but I will and report back today. ;)

It's shocking to think that not too long ago such performance would have cost a packet, who do we have to thank for getting us to here. :D

^ It's not the same price range.......AT ALL.

For Germany, to keep that standard:

M235i: +/- 44k Euro
Cayman S: +/- 64k Euro

20k difference. H.U.G.E. That's what makes the Bimmer that much more impressive. Not to mention it being way more practical, as you can seat 4 adults and you even have luggage space left.

I agree their respective pricing is totally different but I suppose you could spec an M235i into the same price range of a standard Cayman S which is why they are probably comparing them.

P.S.
BTW did a quick gloss over the M235i vs Cayman vs GT86 in CAR mag and ultimately neither the BMW or Toyota can touch the finesse and precision of the Porsche but the M235i gets very close and when you consider the price it's a real bargain.

Who would have thought that one day a Golf would be as fast as an AMG...
The Golf is the lightest yet most practical car in this test... brilliant!
That car is simply flawless! :)

This is a month old but I really cannot let this go.

@klier There is so much wrong with your post.

Firstly, why are you comparing the Cayman S with the M235i? The M235i is closer to the base Cayman in terms of power to weight ratio. So price wise it's MUCH closer with the Cayman being circa 51,000 Euro.

Cayman S = 325hp/1,395kg = 233hp/tonne

M235i = 326hp/1,530kg = 213hp/tonne

Cayman = 275hp/1,385kg = 199hp/tonne

The M235i is 14hp/tonne better than the Cayman, yet is 20hp/tonne worse than the Cayman S.

So, that's just you TYPICALLY choosing examples to suit your argument and make the M235i look better.

Secondly, what do GERMAN prices have to do with anything? CAR is a British magazine and therefore it doesn't matter one bit what price the cars sell for in Germany!! Are people buying CAR in the UK going to read the article and then go and buy a car from Germany?! :rolleyes:

Cayman = £39,694

M235i = £34,250

When you take UK prices into account and the fact that the Porsche will have FAR better residuals than the BMW, then it's clear the M235i and Cayman will be cross-shopped. :rolleyes:

In Sweden a Porsche cost much more to own , services, insurance costs and other ownership costs are way higher for Porsche than BMW, particulary compare to none M car. Just saying. Not that it matters to me but 2-series seem to be more practical and roomier than Cayman.

I chose the Cayman S because it has similar power. Close to the same in fact. Clearly the power to weight ratio is different when you compare an apple to an orange. But the fact of the matter is that power and PERFORMANCE WISE (capitals are so much fun to get you point across :rolleyes:) an M235i compares to a Cayman S. A Cayman is roughly a second slower 0-100 km/h for instance, compared to M235i.

Same with Germany, I chose German prices because this is a German car forum and people live all over the world.

Crazy, mind-boggling stuff indeed. You were right to bring this up again after so long!

I chose the Cayman S because it has similar power.

So does a 730i, an E 400 Coupe, an SQ5 TDI......

Power to weight ratio is what counts, but then what wouldn't fit with your agenda would it?

The question was "why did CAR Magazine compare the M235i with a Cayman?" What does this car forum have to do with anything? :LOL:
