Roadtrips American LeMans Series 2012: LAGUNA SECA

Being a car enthusiast... especially a German car enthusiast can lend itself to of course being a motor racing fan. No hiding the fact that I'm a BMW fan, so this year I decided to attend my first American LeMans Series (ALMS) race. The race was held August 12 at the world-famous Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in Monterey, California (about a 1hr 15min drive for me).

I won't go into detail about the race, or the track, or cars.. I'll just add captions to some of the photos.
But just to summarize, it was a 6hr 'endurance' race, though as with most of these longer duration events, they have evolved into highly competitive sprint races. The drivers and teams were working hard all day long - especially in the GT class (BMW, Corvette, Porsche, Ferrari), and there was no shortage of overly-aggressive driving to entertain the fans. The track itself is a great one. Having learned the track and its surrounds thanks to Forza 4, I was still amazed at the elevation changes at Laguna Seca. The famed Corckscrew didn't disappoint, but there was many other excellent vantage points. I spent the vast majority of the day walking around every part of the track, and when I did sit down, it was at the top of the hill which offered a wide sweeping view of Turns 10, 11, Start/Finish, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5.
The race itself pretty much became a battle between the 2 Corvettes and M3's. By mid-race the BMW's were the dominant car in the GT-class, easily running 1-2 even after one of them got spun around at the Corkscrew. Joey Hand did a masterful job holding on to the lead after losing his rear-bumper (rear-ended by the second place running Corvette). As the sun began to set and the temperature cooled-off quickly, the Corvettes on Michelin tires were able to hold off the Team BMW RLL M3's on Dunlop's. Corvette 1-2, BMW 3-4.

And now on to the photos. I didn't make a conscious effort to take fantastic photos, but rather just a casual approach where I captured whatever I thought looked interesting. The lack of a quality camera lens shows up in some of the photos, and I didn't enhance any of these shots in Photoshop. So they're just happy snaps from a fun day out!

Arrived at the event as part of the BMW Car Club of America. One of the early arrivals as you can see. The customary Monterey Peninsula morning fog delayed some of the supporting races.

Patrick Dempsey (guy from Grey's Anatomy) is a big racing enthusiast, so he put together a new team for the ALMS. This was their first race, and they only receive this car 2 weeks prior to the race.

Muscle Milk's LMP1 entry. The car was absolutely dominant!
DSC04138.webp

Being a part of the BMW Car Club has its perks. Here we were treated to a tour of the BMW garage and hear from the four drivers. Fascinating stuff!
DSC04312.webp

Big rear wing? Check! Massive wheel arches? Check! Massive rear diffuser? Check!

Mazda powered LMP1 entry from Dyson Racing.
DSC04368.webp

Free-race activities culminate in the fans gaining free access to pit-road as the cars and their drivers mingle with the fans. Fantastic stuff by the ALMS!

DSC04383.webp

Got me meet Bobby Rahal as I sat in the pitbox. He was nice enough to sign a BMW M3 GT2 diecast I had brought.
DSC04386.webp

A new entrant to the ALMS, the Lotus Evora GTE. The car sounds fantastic...but reliability is lacking at the moment.
DSC04405.webp

Oh yes! Must print and frame this shot some day!!
DSC04423.webp

Going 3-wide into Turn 5. Action is plenty when you have 5 different classes of cars on a track for 6 Hours!
DSC04470.webp

* Still more photos to come. :)

Aston Martin's Vantage GTE was as fast as it looked good. #007 was cool... as was their decision to have the 007 in white text on a black background to commemorate the passing of Carol Shelby.

Battle between the Corvette's and M3's went on all-day-long!
DSC04489.webp

Oh yes!!

The Prancing Horse looms in the background showing excellent pace early.
DSC04491.webp

The #4 Corvette leads the GT2 class, with the sister car not far behind. In the background you can see the Chevy Corvette Corral. Endless Corvettes.

Braking as they approach Turn 6 for the long run up Rahal Straight.
DSC04512.webp

Very different on the road.. unbelievably even on the track!
DSC04513.webp

Dyson Racing's LMP1 car.. just didn't have the pace of its main competitor from Muscle Milk.
DSC04523.webp

* Still more to come! :D

Not a viewpoint you get to see often at a race track. Laguna Seca is a great place to watch the race from a variety of vantage points.
DSC04527.webp

The run up the hill (Rahal Straight) and then hard on the brakes into the Corkscrew.
DSC04576.webp

Flying Lizard's Porsche exiting the corkscrew.
DSC04591.webp

Fans get a great view of the cars as they drop through the Corkscrew section.
DSC04593.webp

Extreme Sports Racing's 458 looking good and running great!
DSC04599.webp

The GT leaders sweeping round Turn 4.
DSC04649.webp

The challenging of dealing with slower traffic is a constant challenge for drivers, ..and therefore constant entertainment for the fans!
DSC04654.webp

Notice something weird? Leading the GT category, Joey Hand was clipped in the rear by the second-place Corvette. With the rear bumper dangling about, the car was about to be black-flagged to come into the pits to take-off the bumper....but Joey did an amazing move by purposely cutting through Turn 3 where the bumper caught the dirt and broke off by the time he entered Turn 4. All this while holding on to the lead! That's why he's also a DTM driver.
DSC04683.webp

Variety of manufacturers in the GT class, yet such evenly matched machines. Nothing like it!
DSC04706.webp

Best spot in the house. Under the shade, yet full view of the action at the Corkscrew!
DSC04715.webp

* ..but wait, there's MORE! :D

Looking down at Turn 9 as the cars continue to descend. At this point it's a 10-story elevation drop from the top of the Corkscrew!
DSC04726.webp

Best looking car in the field! Gonna be sad to see it go.
DSC04743.webp

Torn off rear bumper, yet still holding on to the lead with the Corvette in hot pursuit.
DSC04751.webp

Th Ferrari's ran strong for most of the race.
DSC04752.webp

Another view of the Corkscrew (Turn 8). In itself, it is a 6-story drop. Another 4 story descent by the time they get to Turn 9, and a few more by the time they approach Turn 11 and head back on the front straight.
DSC04770.webp

After problems early in the race, the Lotus Evora GTE gets back out there to log more laps.
DSC04771.webp

The Aston still looking good...but faded in the GT class.
DSC04787.webp

Trying day for the guys at Dyson Racing. Handsomely outclassed by their main rivals from Muscle Milk. Pity that Mazda couldn't celebrate at their home track.

Another birds-eye view of the sexy M3 GT2 in action! What a great looking CF roof!

Under another caution as the race enters its final hour.
DSC04890.webp

* Not done yet... but getting close. :D

As the 6hr clock winds down, the second-place Corvette holds off the two BMW's, while the lead Corvette holds a comfortable lead.
DSC04907.webp

With the hopes of a BMW win fading, I finally decided to reflect on a great day of racing action. I think this shot sums up the day best. ALMS isn't just about the cars.. it's about the fans.
DSC04914.webp

The fireworks show begins as the Muscle Milk LMP1 car crosses the Start/Finish line. The sun setting on a great days action.
DSC04931.webp

Back in the paddock (garage area)... the Aston Martin team had the car out on show.
DSC04971.webp

The second-place #4 Corvette during post-race inspection.
DSC04974.webp

The victorious #3 Corvette making its way back to the garage for clean-up before being loaded up in the hauler for the long-drive back home.
DSC04987.webp

The Flying Lizard Porsche being cleaned-up. This team won the race last year, but just didn't have the pace this time around.
DSC04978.webp

Mazda powered Dyson Racing LMP1 car. Finished second overall, but that's largely due to there only being 2 cars in the LMP1 field.
DSC04981.webp

* Okay, just 1 more set to go. :)

Awesome photos and review, thanks heaps. Are there a lot of spectators because the crowd looks a bit sparse from the photos.

It was a good crowd actually. Of course most of them either hung around the main grandstand on the front stretch (which I didn't take any photos of), or they were watching from their campervans/RVs. I think the problem they had was the previous race in the series was a month earlier at Long Beach, so many of the Los Angeles people may have decided against making the trip up the coast to attend this race. Last year the two races were about 5 months apart, so that may have affected attendance numbers a little.

I was just thrilled to attend my first race supporting a BMW team. The fan-friendly and all-access approach by the ALMS is fantastic! Definitely added this event as a yearly thing now. :)

Glad you enjoyed the photos buddy. (y)

Thanks mate, I have developed an interest in the ALMS series (thanks to GT5) unfortunately we have no coverage of these events on Australian TV so it is great to read first hand reports from an enthusiast's point of view. Didn't know Rahal-Letterman racing is still around. I am also amazed by the level of accessibility the fans were able to have, they can walk around inside the garage and stand right next to the race cars as well.

btw do you have a pic of your model, was it made by minichamps?

Haha.. thanks buddy! I wanted to uploaded many more photos and race updates, but reception was an issue majority of the time.

If you're a motor racing fan in live within a reasonable driving distance, I definitely encourage you to go an ALMS event. Very affordable admission prices, parking included, paddock access all weekend long included.... great fans, laid-back atmosphere and very fan-friendly (even the drivers and team owners enjoy mingling with the fans).

We're always on this site discussing sports car... Porsche's, Ferrari's, BMW's, Corvette's, Aston's and others... but it's something else when you see these cars racing hard out on a track.

Next event on my list is the NASCAR race up at Sonoma (Infineon Raceway) in about 30 days. ...and then that's it for the year. :(

We gotta get a Germancarforum T-shirt for you.

The ALMS is a fantastic series to watch, especially in the GT class. The cars are so evenly matched lap after lap after lap.. and when you throw in the traffic issue of 5 different classes of cars, you know that your driver/team is always in with a shot if a competitor catches bad traffic. It's fantastic stuff! Throw in a 6hr and a couple of 12hr races and it gets even better.
It's a pity they don't show it over there, especially with the added channels thanks to digital TV. I know that the NASCAR series is shown there (thanks in part to Marcos Ambrose .. who by the way I've met and got him to sign my big Aussie flag! :D )... and the V8 Supercars are shown over here (1 week behind). You can watch the ALMS races live online, but that would be early Sunday morning Sydney time.

Helpful links to watch ALMS online:

http://espn.go.com/watchespn/index/_/sport/auto racing/channel/espn3

Of course, if you're interested in ALMS, then you gotta be interested in LeMans 24hr, which is coming up real soon. :)

Rahal-Letterman is still around... now they have an extra 'L' in Lanigan (don't know who he is). They've been running the M3 GT2's for a few years now, and after the BMW teams in Europe moved over to DTM, BMW Team RLL is the only team in the world running the M3 GT2 . That's part of why I attended this race.. I just had to see the E92 GT2 before it gets put out to greener pastures. :(
Team RLL also has 2 cars in the IndyCar series, ..and their biggest race - the Indy 500 is this weekend!! (Great weekend coming up.. Sunday morning F1 @ Monaco, Midday Indy500, afternoon NASCAR Coke600 @ Charlotte... Oh yes!)

I am also amazed by the level of accessibility the fans were able to have, they can walk around inside the garage and stand right next to the race cars as well.

It really is impressive how fan-friendly ALMS is! Let me clarify though.. those shots I took inside the actual BMW garage, that tour wasn't for the general public as a whole, but rather for BMW CarClub members. All of us marched in a big group to the garage area and got go inside the garage and hear from the 4 drivers. In saying that however, as you can see in the photos, later on once the cars were lined-up on the front straight, ALL fans could walk around the cars, take photos and converse with the drivers, get autographs! Since this was my first ALMS race, I was absolutely loving the open access atmosphere. All this at a very reasonable price (For Laguna Seca, tickets were US$50, and that includes the Paddock access.. $70 for Fri/Sat admission).

btw do you have a pic of your model, was it made by minichamps?

Ah yes, on to the model. Unfortunately I don't have a photo of it at the moment (at work), but I can definitely post one later today or tomorrow.

As I'm sure you've figured out, it's a Minichamps 1:43 scale BMW M3 GT2 (#25) which won the 2010 Nurburgring 24Hour. Here's a link to some pics: http://www.galerie.1zu87.com/1zu43_...Power_Nr_25_Minichamps_80422185880_21705.html

Alongside my Kyosho 1:18 BMW M5, the M3 GT2 has been my pride and joy..... BUT.. in a matter of days that will all change!! I will be receiving this:

Dude. Had I known that you would be going, I would've gone as well. None of my friends here are into motorsports enough to go there. So I don't want to drive 3 hours alone. Maybe next year. I'm not a NASCAR fan, so no Infineon for me.

BTW, If you go through I5 to get to sonoma, drop me a line cuz you will have to run through Sac.

I definitely plan to go next year, so yeah, we can make it a micro-GCF meet. :D

I live in the Central Valley, so I'll be coming through Livermore->Oakland->San Rafael->Sonoma..... even bigger problem is I'm going to the race with my father-in-law as he's a NASCAR fan too.

I don't think there are too many big motor sports events in California for the remainder of the year. There's the GrandAm Rolex Series at Laguna Seca in September I think... but that's about it.

I'm definitely down for that. We can ask a few other folks on here who might be down to go next year. Hell, I would've love to go to F1, but no money. And dude...I just had a mini-meet up in Las Vegas with Nate.

Oh ok. You're going that route. With your father in law? At Nascar? Damn, I hope you two get along REALLY well. LOL

Hahahaha... yeah we share a common enthusiasm for NASCAR, so it's not the typical stand-off-ish relationship with the in-laws. Besides, my parents are still back in Australia, so the in-laws are all I got over here. I guess you either love NASCAR or hate it... I'm definitely the former. Not too fond of the 'typical' NASCAR fan, but you take the good with the bad. I will say though, the fans at the ALMS were VERY VERY different to what you get at a NASCAR event. :D ...but I enjoy NASCAR for the racing, not for the tailgating redneck culture or whatever. :p

Yeah F1 in Austin, Texas is gonna be neat...and I know the V8 Supercars from Australia are also planning to hit the Texas track next year or 2014... so the US is getting more love again. Of course money is always a problem.. :(
