Rumors All that Talk about a BMW Supercar

I'm not sure it would be that dire if i brand wasn't that successful as I doubt it's being used as a major venture of revenue, in my opinion they are using this separate brand name to trial technologies that they intend to use mainstream in the near future.

It's always better to test the waters small scale.

Exactly. BMW i is a "transitional brand" - a "mobile lab" for the rest of the BMW group fleet. The tech will eventually trickle down to other BMW Group vehicles, while BMW i cars will get new latest tech-of-the-art stuff that will also eventually trickle down over the time ... and so on.

That's also why a sub-brand was introduced - to feature the whole line of sustainable vehicles.

but they would surely feel the money and time wasted on the project

Can't wait till BMW V6, this is the engine of the future. Mark my words.

?

What is your fascination with BMW V6?
There has to be a story- please do share so we can understand where you coming from and perhaps where you are going with it.

I hope he's right because I paid a lot of money for the private number plate "V6 BMW" in order to sell it on at a profit.

The V6 formula 1 cars from 2014 will make turboed V6's more common in road cars in the future. There was an article a few days ago saying that Ferrari were considering a V6 for the 458 replacement. A V6 BMW towards the end of this decade is a distinct possibility, imo.

Edit: Porsche has just released a turbo V6 too.

Regardless of what any of us might think of V6 compared to inline6 there's little denying that from a packaging stand point it's superior as it's not only more compact length wise it should also have a lower the CoG. BMW with their inline 6 is like Porsche with their rear mounted engine, their purists would rather die than see their demise.

Ja ja ja, we all know it... The thing is, BMW doesn't have a packaging problem with their straight six because their cars are engineered to be RWD. Just look at an M135i: poorly packaged? Not at all? Magnificently well-endowed? Unquestionably.

If you're Audi and you've engineered yourselves into a quattro-is-mandatory-for-performance mantra/corner then yes, a V6 is a wonderful thing for packaging. That's because the packaging you already started out was - with respect to quattro - isn't ideal from the outset. BMW also cants their inline sixes over a couple of degrees, and there's less mass to the sides of the centreline of the car too; notwithstanding the minor advantage in terms of CoG, there is nothing superior about a V6 over an inline 6. Inlines sixes are scientifically smoother, mechanically more elegant, simpler (but don't read that as cheaper) and just darned nicer to be at the helm of than any V6 out there. A BMW inline 6 is something absolutely special in the automotive industry, just as a Porsche - with its engine in the back - is too.

BMW I6 engines are now a part of an engine modular platform, shared with I4 & I3, diesel & petrol.

So, I6 is not going anywhere.Turbocharged, of course.

Yes, V6 was discussed - for the M3 / M4 only (as a derivate of V8), but ditched obviously for some reason.

And don't forget the sound, Martin!!!!

^If BMW make the switch to V6 I bet there will be a very good reason for it, though that reason might not be performance driven but crash/safety reasons. Personally I prefer the note some V6s make but each to their own.

I6 will die. Mark my words.

Of course it will, harbinger of doom. At exactly the same time as the V6 will. When petrol engines are just tiny little hypercharged generators for electric range-extended vehicles.

The very fact its been discussed suggests at some point the switch might be made, but like Martin said presently the need is not there because BMW can accommodate the inline 6 and that engine is more than capable of achieving the desire outputs, emissions, economy etc so why go to the expense of developing a new engine to get the same or similar results. The only thing I disagree with is that V6 is shit by comparison because numerous manufacturers with RWD setups choose V6 instead of inline 6 and its being used and will be used by engine manufacturers I regard equally as accomplished as BMW, frankly I think I hit the nail on the head with its liking to Porsche's 911 configuration as its very hard to break with tradition.

What a nice render......in tomorrows Autozeitung Magazin.
