Daimler & BMW Partnership Talk Thread

Daimler, BMW say cooperation talks still ongoing

Sat Jan 16, 2010 10:17am EST

STUTTGART/MUNICH (Reuters) - German carmakers Daimler and BMW on Saturday dismissed a report that they had ended talks on possible cooperation without success.

Asked about the report, due to be published in the next issue of Der Spiegel magazine on January 18, a spokesman for Daimler said: "We continue to talk to BMW," declining to give details of the status of the talks.

A BMW spokesman said talks about a purchasing cooperation were still being held.

Der Spiegel said in pre-release abstracts of its story that the one year-old talks had failed and there were no dates set for a return to the table or topics left for discussion.

Daimler said in December it was talking to various manufacturers including French peer Renault about options for cooperation.

I guess this all but died! :t-banghea

Stupid on both MB's and BMW's part. It's going to come and haunt them in 5 years when Audi is making 15%+ profit margins and they'll be lucky to be making 10%.

an update. Thanks for the reminder, Mr. Mercedes. :usa7uh:

INTERVIEW-BMW to save 100 mln eur in Daimler purchasing deal

MUNICH, Sept 1 (Reuters) - German carmaker BMW expects a purchasing cooperation with rival Daimler to save about 100 million euros ($126 million) a year from 2012/2013, the company's procurement chief said.

"We are satisfied with the cooperation. That will pay off over the years," Herbert Diess told Reuters in an interview.

Carmakers are on the hunt to cut costs by building scale, and many have been seeking operational alliances to gain synergies without tying up any capital in equity.

BMW and Daimler already buy together a double-digit number of components to get better prices. Diess said the cooperation will be expanded, without being more specific.

BMW is also mulling options for a purchasing tie-up with French PSA Peugeot Citroen, which already supplies diesel engines for BMW's Mini brand.

No decision has been made yet, Diess said, adding that no further partnerships beyond those two would be necessary.
