Fiat Said to Delay Maserati, Alfa Romeo Models on China Woes

  • Maserati sports car, Alfa Romeo sedan to be rolled out later
  • CEO shifts resources to cars better suited for Europe, U.S.

The Maserati Alfieri sports car and an Alfa Romeo sport utility vehicle are among models that won’t go on sale as projected next year, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the discussions are private. An Alfa Romeo sedan that would challenge the likes of the BMW 5-Series may not be ready for 2017 as originally planned, as the brand shifts spending to upgrades of its best-selling cars, the Giulietta and MiTo compacts, the people said.

Discussions over investments through 2018 are ongoing, and final decisions haven’t yet been made, the people said. Chief Executive Officer Sergio Marchionne is set to unveil changes in January, they said. Representatives for Fiat Chrysler declined to comment on spending plans.

The delays show the impact of the slowdown in China, where the economy is forecast to expand at the slowest pace since 1990. That’s forcing Marchionne to tweak an ambitious plan to invest 48 billion euros ($51 billion) over five years just as he’s set to lose the reliable profits generated by Ferrari NV. Shareholders in Fiat, which is strained by 10.3 billion euros in net debt, will meet Thursday to approve the complete spin off of the supercar unit.

“After selling off the family’s silver, Fiat is still loaded with debt as Alfa Romeo is far away from generating cash,” said Ian Fletcher, an analyst at IHS in London. “While it’s a rational decision to step back from some projects and concentrate resources on the most important ones, the carmaker isn’t getting nearer to its 2018 sales target” of selling 7 million cars. The market researcher forecasts deliveries rising to 5.1 million vehicles that year.

Fiat fell as much as 1.3 percent to 13.16 euros and was down 0.8 percent at 1:54 a.m. in Milan. That pared the stock’s gain this year to 38 percent, valuing the company at 17.3 billion euros.

Alfa Romeo Shift
Fiat’s investment is now set to be less aggressive than planned in 2016, which was slated to be the peak year of spending in the Italian-U.S. manufacturer’s strategy focused on expanding Maserati, Jeep and Alfa Romeo into global brands. The reallocation entails a shift for Alfa Romeo as it initially focuses on models for Europe’s revitalized auto market.

Instead of pushing for growth in China with a bigger sedan, Alfa Romeo plans to renew the MiTo hatchback, which was scrapped in the original plan. It will also upgrade the Giulietta compact. The new versions of Giulietta and MiTo will be unveiled in the first half of 2016, the people said.

The brand’s expansion has been rocky. The start of deliveries for the new Giulia sedan was delayed by a few months for final development work, and Alfa Romeo’s first SUV, which will be presented next year, probably won’t make it to customers until early 2017.

Still, Fiat Chrysler hasn’t universally postponed new models. The company’s Fiat brand recently introduced the new 12,500-euro Tipo hatchback in Europe and presented the all-new 124 Spiderroadster.

Strategy ‘Rethink’
The carmaker is also boosting its SUV lineup as it seeks to benefit from strong demand in the U.S. Maserati will present the Levante in March at the Geneva motor show. The brand’s first SUV will go on sale next year. Jeep, the group’s fastest growing unit, is set to unveil a new mid-size SUV next year, and Marchionne has said he may raise Jeep’s 2018 target of 1.9 million deliveries following robust demand for the compact Renegade.

Still, Marchionne acknowledged that the slowdown in China is causing the company to “rethink” its model strategy, including a shift to products “more ideally suited” for Europe and North America than China, he said on an Oct. 28 conference call with analysts. The CEO reaffirmed his 2018 group targets at the time.

For a moment, I really wish VAG took Alfa Romeo away from FIAT...

Are. They. F***ing. Mental!?

Alfa Romeo should keep its focus on:

1. Giulia
2. X3 competitor
3. 5 series competitor
4. X5 competitor

In that order. Then, and only then, should they pay attention on 1 Series competitor, and coupes.
If they really want to focus more on Europe, Giulia estate is a must.

MiTo should be preserved in a museum, as a warning from history.

Alfa Romeo business plan update

Alfa Romeo's future is looking slightly less rosy as Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has presented an updated business plan which calls for the brand to slow its product rollout.

Citing uncertainties in China and the "need to guarantee proper global distribution network execution," Alfa Romeo will reduce spending on manufacturing as well as research and development through 2018. As part of this change, the brand will delay the launch of several different models.

Alfa Romeo was coy on specifics but the company's original five-year plan called for launching eight different models by the end of 2018. The new plan is largely identical but the full product rollout has been pushed back to mid-2020.

Following the launch of the Giulia, Alfa Romeo will introduce a new mid-size crossover in 2016 or 2017. Between 2017 and 2020, the company plans to launch six other models including a hatchback and a full-size sedan. There will also be two additional crossovers and two mysterious "specialty" vehicles.

This represents a slight change from the original five-year plan which called for called for two compact models and just one specialty vehicle.

The new models will be aimed at customers in Europe and North America as Alfa Romeo notes the company will face import restrictions in China.

Pipe dream at best. They can't even get the Gulia into production. I have never seen a company this big that is so half arsed.

Sergio Marchionne and his men are truly inept and they should be fired immediately. All they needed to do is to follow Mazda and Hyundai's product planning, put more effort into designing and building great looking cars with at least industry standard quality and reliability.

We all knew Marchionne is bad news, and it is quite surprising that he has been given so much power.

This is what I've been saying about this whole partnership. Quality and reliability and now proper engineering will take them further than a bunch of admittedly HOT cars that never get to market on time or with the right quality. Fiat/Alfa need a lot of help at the dealership level too. Say what you want about duller car companies and duller cars, but at least they produce what they say they're going to produce. Could you imagine MB and BMW having this kind of trouble and delaying the S-Class or 3-Series? NO way.

The profundity of BMW's, Mercedes' and Audi's knowledge of the compact executive segment cannot be disregarded. There is no denying that the 3er, A4 and C-Class completely dominate the class to the extent that even the best newcomers fall short simply because of the enormous momentum of the Teutonic three. Anyone who announces a manual, twin-turbo, Ring-burning range topper as their entrant into this segment is, quite frankly, pulling the piss. Makes Dany Bahar look like an utter realist.

This Alfa Romeo business plan is the same from some years ago. I don't see any update, the only one is one delay until 2020. They have one problem: compete with three principals german car producers, and they're continuosly delaying the products all watching over the movements of new models from germans.

I respect to all car producers, theirs strategies.. but Giulia QV is one car between one 3-Series and one 5-Series, with one sport version (Giulia QV) with aproximately 500 ps. Will have the future full-size sedan one QV version? If Giulia has 500 ps, how many will have this one? As S63 AMG or S65 AMG? I think they will have problems with this new focusing.

I cannot assure nor guarantee what models are the "two mysterious "specialty" vehicles", but I think are two sports cars, one coupe and one roadster.

Nice if you want, or prefer, one car with the front of Giulia more aggresive and the rear from the Quattroporte...

With a front engine configuration and no carbon tub it can't really be a replacement for the 4C.

Needless to say the old Brera is a design classic that has many fans. To see a new one would be great. If Alfa can put a Maserati V6 in it, it will be a charmer!

Correct it's not really a replacement. However the 4c is ending production. Alfa is working on minimum five new cars. That's a lot. They'll have their hands full. This coupe seems to be a done deal though as FCA doesn't have a midsize coupe in their lineup.

Makes sense. The Giulia is generating awesome reviews. If the use it to underpin the Brera and kept the weight down, it will be a smashing hit.

Imagine how hot an Abarth version could be.
