GT 4-Door Coupé (X290) 2026 AMG GT 4-Door Vision EV

The Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupé (X290) is the first generation five-door variant of the AMG GT two-door sports car. Production: September 2018– Model years: 2019–
I’ve watched the videos, and for me, it’s a bit of a ‘meh’. I find the design a bit overcomplicated, but unlike many people, I think the front end is okay – not amazing, but different. On the other hand, I think the rear end is a real let-down. The technology is impressive, but that’s always the problem with electric cars... How long will it last? The Chinese will bring out something similar for a quarter of the price within a year or two. In short, I think it will be quickly forgotten, like many EVs.

Increasingly volatile times are making predictions all the more complicated, an ever increasing number of factors emerging. But I'll give it a go anyway:

A.) No idea what is going on regarding the U.S.-North American market and how it will look in 10 years time.

B.) Here in the EU+UK+Norway+Switzerland: In no more than 10 years time, at the very most, the 6, 8 and 12 cylinder ICE+Hybrid will no longer have any substantial significance regarding new vehicle registrations. They will cater to a very in numbers limited, demographic. A demographic that will continue to rapidly diminish in numbers. Very compact 2-to-4 cylinder ICE range extenders may remain in greater numbers. Of course, the ICE V8+ classic car markets will continue to exist and perhaps flourish. The vast majority of newer vehicles on the roads will be EVs.

Funny, I feel the exact opposite. I loved the concept. This one, however, is a hard pass for me. They butchered the car's front and back.
Interesting. The concept was absolutely dreadful imo, especially the front. Looked like an ugly Maserati with a catfish mouth.

This will be the interesting part. Will EVs by huyndai, Chinese manufacturers and the next EV M3, be faster and more capable for lea money.

Those rivals will be running their hands as the opportunity to make this super innovative AMG look overpriced.

The new M3 EV will feature a 'fake' sound system that mimics the sound of a V10 engine; if the new M3 is more powerful, cheaper and faster, it’s really going to be a challenge to justify this new AMG GT EV.

The "Fake" V10 sound is very promising too. (At 7:40)

I mean if we're making fake engine noise, anyone can do anything so that's not really going to matter.
Will the M3 be faster? Maybe.

But AMG is sandbagging quite heavily with the 63. Even with 3 motors it's capable of over 1300hp and 2400Nm of torque. And they can probably put out a quad motor version if they're really feeling pressured.

The power arms race is going to be too stupid to even be worth thinking about.

These things are going to develop so fast, that in 5 years who knows what the landscape will look like.

That all having been said, I think these odd arguments that the pace or EV development makes things hard to sell, and therefore you shouldn't try, to be biblically foolish.
The easiest way to lose a race is to not compete.

The High Performance Electric Architecture is technologically designed for even higher outputs of over 1,000 kW.

After watching some videos and looking at the available cars pics I have had to carefully think about how I feel about this car. The first thing I can say is I like this production version hugely more than the GT XX Concept. Probably the first production Mercedes that looks better than its concept version.

The basic shape of the car looks quite good. It looks very low and sleek and also very long in profile. I like how there is a wave flowing from the front to the rear and the car has some sports car proportions with the swelling of the hips. It doesn't look like a saloon at all, which I think is a good thing. Definitely more sports coupe GT in silhouette.

The front I am not sure of, at certain angles especially head on it can look odd. The problem is the bonnet/hood, they kept it slightly shorter leaving a small gap with the leading edge of the bumper to include an awkward looking body colour trim piece (white car) but with the strange option of a darkened light band (yellow car). In my honest opinion the inclusion of the light band is a must as it makes the car look more cohesive at the front and is probably what they were intending looking at the design sketches.

I think if they made the car have slightly wider wheel arches as in the design sketch it would have looked terrific. The grill should have been all black like in the design sketch with vertical slats. The inclusion of the LED elements is definitely an afterthought.

The rear looks so different than other Mercedes cars, it has a mixture of Ferrari (round tail lights) and McLaren (light bar) with a black plastic panel. It looks kinda like AMG wanted the car to appear like a supercar from the rear. It may also be styled like this to have a resemblance to the C111 sports car of the 70s. I kinda like it as it stands out and looks so different to any other saloon on the road.

The interior has some details that I really like alot. The door cards look fantastic with the diamond stitch leather and the carbon fiber grab handle and unusual door opening handle and the Burmeister metallic looking speaker covers look awesome. The center console with mix of carbon fiber trim panel and metallic turbine look switches for the drive select functions looks really classy. The only thing that spoils the otherwise brilliant interior is the infotainment screens. The passenger one is too oversized and with the black plastic panel on each side housing the otherwise great looking turbine styled metallic vents it looks cheap for this class of car. The size of the screen bezels again are totally unacceptable for a pricey car like this and should have again the GLC style of screen.

Overall I like the styling of the GT 4dr EV, it manages to stand out and is not plain Jane, it has some talkable styling elements front and rear which over time sure most people will probably warm up to.

I wonder when they decided to make the light bar optional. That was a change from what I had seen previously. I’m glad they listened to customers.

To the folks saying this car isn’t beautiful, I remind your Wagener wanted the full AMG models to pass the “Batman” test and look hyper aggressive. I don’t think this will last long and that front end is already absent from future plans.

As for the power figures, no they are not groundbreaking. What is supposed to be groundbreaking is how well the car drives. In any event, this car is too expensive and will be easy to ignore.
That’s a sad picture you paint here. Weird front end that won’t be used anymore, doubts from the design team arising from the stupid light bar. And the performance of a performance car being not so relevant…

For those feeling alienated by the design:

Manufaktur can and will offer myriad possibilities regarding paint, trim, materials and finishes. This could contribute significantly to making the car far more visually appealing. It is NOT a fundamentally "ugly" car IMHO. The full side profile silhouette view and the flank surfacing are quite pleasing. The tech is immensely impressive.

When it comes to the power race for EVs, the Chinese are ahead of the game!
I was, of course, giving my personal opinion; as far as I’m concerned, the recent design leaks of the M3 EV are premature, and I think the battle between the GT and the M3 is a foregone conclusion in BMW’s favour.
Of course, we’ll see about that next year.
If it were up to me, I wouldn’t buy either the M3 or the GT over an EV... I’d probably go for the SU7 or something powerful but not too expensive since EV lose a lot of value.
But anyway, I have no intention of buying an EV, and this is obviously just a hypothetical scenario.
I’m only interested in the design of these EVs because it’s often very innovative; I can’t wait to see what Ferrari comes up with for the Luce.

Something like this would've fixed most of the front design problems. I don't understand how they didn't just play it safe.

also the rear could've been very interesting without the black cheap looking piece.

I was just thinking along the lines of your rear lighting units + surround proposal.

Could Manufaktur make something similar possible ? Perhaps incorporated into a more mature, classically elegant package...
