GT 4-Door Coupé (X290) 2026 AMG GT 4-Door Vision EV

The Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupé (X290) is the first generation five-door variant of the AMG GT two-door sports car. Production: September 2018– Model years: 2019–
Development started in 2020 AFAIK, the problem of these cars is that the development took too long.
This car would have been interesting in 2018-2020. Today, acceleration speed is commodity. My neighbours EX30 does 0-62mph in 3.6sec. AMG can’t use acceleration as a bragging right.

You can buy a used one for probably 14% of what this AMG will retail at. I know it might seem apples to oranges, but if it’s not lighter or much faster than a Volvo, then you will pay $200k for an over engineered product.

Problem about EVs is they’re never special enough to justify pricing. I mean who would buy the 200k Mercedes when something from china is faster at 60k?🤷‍♂️

Atleast with ICE engines it doesn’t matter if a Civic is faster than a V12 Lambo. At the end of the day, you still got a V12 screaming behind your ears, giving you an emotional yet special feeling when you driving it fast💯

AMG's chief objective is to provide a road car, GT "halo" that showcases it's AMG.EA architecture. "Unit sales" is a subordinate issue pertaining to this particular vehicle.

IMHO, most interesting will be when genuinely accomplished automotive journalists/influencers get their hands on the first serial production cars. What sounds like a crazy thought: "What if Harry Metcalfe absolutely gushes over it ?". Or Henry Catchpole ? Jason Cammisa ? Alexander Bloch ? Thomas Geiger ? You never really know until the deed is done, do you ? But yes, dedicated naysayers will remain naysayers. It comes with the territory. Transformation can be intimidating.

Sure they can, if it places among the fastest cars you can buy. This Volvo doesn't mean a thing at 3.6 secs. There a lot of ICEs that beat that already.

Four-cylinder hybrids weren't bad cars; it was just the wrong path. They were technologically ahead of their competitors. EQ cars were weak in terms of design, but they weren't inferior to their rivals either.

Like the EQ cars and F1 inspired 4 cylinder hybrids?!
Yes. The EQ cars aren't bad either by the way. Just ugly.

I swear some of you here are so fatalistic.
Mercedes shouldn't make EVs because they depreciate? Absolutely rubbish.

They have to exist in the same regulatory environment as everyone else. Which means less combustion and more EV.

And you know what. EVs might start retaining more of their value now that certain geopolitical actors are conspiring to make crude $200 per barrel.

Good point. And one could add: "When the time comes that the arguments in favor of BEVs based on their intrinsic attributes become so obviously overwhelming". That time could come far sooner than many can possibly imagine today.

If would be awesome if the performance is close to this:

Rimac Nevera R (2025)
  • 0–60 mph: 1.66 seconds
  • 0–100 mph: 2.96 seconds
  • 0–200 mph: 9.25 seconds
  • 0–250 mph: 17.71 seconds
  • Standing 1/4 Mile: 7.90 seconds
  • Standing Mile: 19.71 seconds
  • 0–250–0 mph: 26.20

Both type of cars can co-exist. Problem starts when Mercedes is losing it’s heritage by dominating it 80% with EVs & the rest are plugin inline 6s & 3 V8 models that only come in AMG variant🤷‍♂️

Remember when you could get a V8 in a Non-AMG E-class? Good times. Now you can’t even get it in an AMG E-class. C-class? We’d be lucky to even see an inline 6 version these days.

Heritage about V8s don't matter when oil flowing through the busiest shipping corridor, has been reduced to all but zero.
Heritage doesn't matter to regulators.

I would love a non-AMG V8 E class. I really would. But it does not make sense in today's world. And I'm afraid you just have to get over it.

The non-AMG V8s were already not big sellers. I imagine now that gasoline has begun trending over $3.50 a gallon, the AMGs won't be selling in big numbers either.
What happens when oil hits $200? And gasoline prices hit $7/gallon?

Indeed, the urgent need to promote the highest possible degree of energy self-sufficiency is glaringly obvious. Can it be comprehensively achieved in the near term future ? Highly extremely unlikely. Will the costs be immense ? Yes, they will. Pertaining to Germany alone, current estimates indicate that they would amount to some 650 bio. Euros in order to complete an accomodative energy grid by 2045. However, the alarming propensity to abuse, misappropriate and simply waste funds is a dilemma in Germany that hinders the fast-tracking of obvious, fundamental necessities.

i see your points the both of you. But here’s the problem, if all the competitors have V8 engines & Mercedes as the pioneer of V8s doesn’t….won’t that eventually kill the brand? Mercedes is not VOLVO

They must try make the V8 as efficient as possible for as long as possible. They are the first to make a V8 from Germany after all. They must be brave enough.

Nobody wants an EV mobile for a fun car.

Which competitors to Mercedes have V8s in non-special (M, RS, AMG, Blackwing) models?

Which competitors to Mercedes have V8s in non-special (M, RS, AMG, Blackwing) models?
BMW : X5/6/7 M50i/M60-All V8s(M550i recently lost V8)
Audi : SQ7,SQ8,S8-All V8s
Porsche : Panamera/Cayenne S,GTS,Turbo,Turbo S,Turbo SE, Turbo GT- All V8s
Cadillac? ICE Escalade is V8 minimum

Mercedes only offers the 580 in some markets & that’s only for S580, GLS580. A GLE 580 is a unicorn.

And Mercedes have:
GLE 580 (its rare because nobody wants to buy one, not because they don't make it)
GLS 580
S580

Which is basically the same as the competitors. Face it, the V8 non-sport models are just a dying breed. Nobody wants them because they're expensive as absolute f#ck to maintain and run.
And they're only going to become even more of a liability in the current geopolitical climate.

Mercedes are making a new V8 by the way. Its there if the market wants it. But this idea that they should abandon the high end EV powertrains is just nonsense. Not having any offerings at all, even if they sell badly/depreciate badly, is basically giving up the opportunity to develop experience in manufacturing and tuning EVs. And giving up is stupidity.

No matter how much we petrolheads love ICE. There is a future where that is no longer the powertrain of choice for non-petrolheads. The average joe is much more important to Mercedes, BMW and Audi, than any number of enthusiasts.
