Although I'm a die-hard BMW fan, I've to admit, that I would Always take a 911 over any 8er. Why? Because I'm personally Looking for a Drivers car. The 8 series is simply too big!
At the time rumours About the upcoming 8 series came up, there was lots of talk About "8 series getting smaller than outgoing 6 series … more in the direction towards a 911 rival".
This made me hopeful/happy! But at the same time I had already lots of doubts, because talk about a GC variant came also up quickly. This already was a clear hint, that the 8 will not become as small/nimble as a 911.
Now we have a 8er, which is nearly as large as the outgoing 6 series, larger than a 4 series coupe and much larger than a 911
I'm sure BMW must have done some market research before developing/positioning the 8er … but to me the outcome is weird. How many premium sport GT of the size of a 911 are out there? Even if also 911 is getting bigger and bigger with every Generation, I still see no real contender!? Even the AMG GT to me feels (don't know the data/Facts to be honest) big compared to the 911 … and also any Corvette or even F-type. On the other hand: Big GTs like the 8er - there are plenty in the market.
The M4, which I drive and love is already a bit too large for my taste, since I only used the back seats once in two years. In BMW portfolio I would (size wise) need to switch to the M2, but it is - compared to an M4 - a clear downgrade in lots of areas (design, quality, avail. optional equipment). So I would basically ask BMW for a shrinked down M4 positioned above the current M4. So -> a real 911 contender!
A 911 GTS here in Germany Costs (realistically specced) around 170k €.
A M4 Competition Costs (also realistically specced) around 105k €.
So: There is a gap of about 65k. Wouldn't a 130 - 140k € 911 rival be possible for BMW?
If BMW would decide for offering a real Z4M Coupe or something, this could/would be the right direction although they had to stretch themself to reach the premium level of a 911 with their Z4 basis.
