S40/V40/V50 2016 Volvo V40 (facelift)

The Volvo S40 is a series of subcompact executive cars marketed and produced by the Swedish manufacturer Volvo Cars from 1995 to 2012, offered as a more mainstream alternative to the compact executive Volvo 850 and later the Volvo S60 to compete in a lower pricing bracket. The S40 was more or less positioned against premium-leaning small family cars like the Volkswagen Jetta as well as some mass-market large family cars.

The Volvo V40 hatchback was first introduced at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show, followed by a launch in various markets around the world as a 2013 model year car. It was one of the first models to feature an updated design language that currently influences the S60 and XC60, and, given its entry-level status, is equipped to the brim with technology and safety features.

Fast forward to 2015, and its rivals BMW 1-Series and Mercedes A-Class are launching in their facelifted versions. To keep the competition alive, Volvo would soon have to introduce a mid-cycle refresh for the V40, and when they do, they would be tempted to bring the V40 in line with the design that launched on the Volvo XC90, as depicted by these unofficial renders by Design RM.

The front end gets a more-rounded set of LED headlamps with “Thorhammer” LED DRLs, a smaller version of the XC90’s vertical-slat grille housing the new Volvo logo and diagonal slash, and a re-styled lower fascia. While the side remains intact, the rear could feature redesigned LED taillamps and a sportier bumper. Changes inside could be minimal. Being just a facelift, it may not feature the large 9-inch Sensus touchscreen infotainment system from the XC90, nor the funky Orrefors crystal gear shifter. It may include updates to the interior trim and customization options.

As the Drive-E range of four cylinder engines is less than two-years old, one can safely expect it to serve the V40 for the rest of its lifecycle and into the next generation. The range includes the D4 Drive-E 4-cylinder twin turbo diesel engine rated at 190 PS and 400 Nm with a six-speed manual transmission or 8-speed Aisin automatic gearbox, and a T5 Drive-E that includes a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder turbo petrol engine delivering 243 PS and 350 Nm through an 8-speed automatic transmission.

Volvo V40
Volvo Cars gave its bestselling Volvo V40 and V40 Cross Country the new face of Volvo for Model Year 2017 with trim updates across the range.

Central to the model year exterior updates are new grille meshes featuring the updated and more visually striking Volvo Iron Mark. The update also equips the V40 with the new 'Thor's Hammer' headlights, resulting in a confident new look shared with Volvo's new 90 Series cars.

"The V40 is the best-selling Volvo model in Europe and the second-most popular Volvo model globally, making it a very important car for the company. With the updates for model year 2017 we make this already very successful model even more attractive to customers in the segment," said Björn Annwall, Senior Vice President, Sales, Marketing and Customer Service at Volvo Car Group.

The exterior update includes the addition of five colours to Volvo's V40 offer including the completely new Amazon Blue and Denim Blue, as well as three colours already used by other models in the Volvo Cars portfolio: Bursting Blue, Mussel Blue and Luminous Sand.

The Volvo V40 will also receive the new 'rank marks' that were first introduced on the XC90, visualising trim levels and variants and a total of eight new wheels across the V40, R-Design and V40 Cross Country models.

In a cue taken from the award-winning Volvo Concept Estate a new upholstery called City Weave will be added along with a new Charcoal/Blond steering wheel option. Several new interior panel trims are also to be offered: Milled Aluminium, Black Grid Aluminium and Stealth Aluminium. Accent trim colours in the door inserts will now be offered with contrasting stitching and for the first time a black headliner will be available as an option in the V40. New tread plates will be added for the R-Design and Inscription trim levels and an updated key fob with the new Volvo logo will be available.

Strangely, I like the V40 it is a very good C-segment car.

Strangely, I hate it with passion.

It looks like an over blown balloon, with no clean shape. I also think that many design details are over done and now, with the facelift, the front end looks funny. A Volvo can't be looking funny.

On top of that, it's handling and driving experience is way too safe, nothing like the Focus, it shares its underpinnings with. The common guts where much more evident with the previous S40/ V50.

That said, it's one of the most sensible choices in the segment.

I'd still be much more happy with an A3 or an 1er.

Such a pretty and under-appreciated car this. It sells poorly in SA due to restrictive import duties levied on car makers with no local manufacturing activities.
It's a shame because the V40 and V40 XC are excellent C-Segment alternatives to the regular bunch.

Does Volvo no longer have a factory in SA? Didn't they produce the S40 and V40 there a few years back?

You're right - they used to make the previous generation S40 here in SA in the Ford plant. This is no longer the case.

That new front bumper underneath air intake doesn't look very good, almost like a mustache!

Next-gen Volvo S40, V40 and XC40 confirmed for US

Good news coming from Volvo as the company has announced its next generation of 40 series models will be launched in the United States.

Speaking to Automotive News at the ongoing Geneva Motor Show, Volvo CEO Hakan Samuelsson revealed plans to offer the 40 family in the US. This will include not just the usual V40 hatchback and S40 sedan, but also a compact crossover which will likely be badged “XC40.”

Volvo’s R&D senior vice president Peter Mertens admitted it was a mistake not to offer the series 40 cars in the US, but the decision was taken during a time when Volvo was having some serious financial problems.

With the V40 facelift revealed only a few days ago, it will be a while until an all-new model will be introduced. The new 40 series models will ride on Volvo’s Compact Modular Architecture (CMA)platform which will borrow some of the bits and pieces from the larger SPA platform that has underpinned so far the XC90, S90, and V90. The first CMA-based car is due next year and these compact Volvos will also get a range-topping T5 Twin Engine hybrid derivative in the same vein as the SPA’s T8 Twin Engine setup.

Besides the V40, S40, and XC40, Volvo is also analyzing the prospects of a long-wheelbase V40, and a C40 coupe to serve as a spiritual successor of the defunct C30. It’s unclear at this point whether the V40 LWB will go global or Volvo will sell it in select markets, with China being on top of the list.
