The Opel Astra is a compact car/small family car (C-segment) developed and produced by the Opel since 1991. It was first launched in September 1991 as a direct replacement to the Opel Kadett. Opel's Evolutionary-Styled New Astra 5d Spied

"Evolution" seems to be the key word in play for Opel and the successors to the brand's two most popular models, the B-segment Corsa and C-segment Astra. It won't be long before we see what Opel came up with for the Corsa, but for the next Astra, we'll have to wait until mid-2015 to early-2016.
The new five-door hatchback version of the Astra spied here retains the compact model's familiar silhouette, but it looks slightly sharper with a lower and flatter front-end, which like the rest of the car, will take styling cues from the Monza Coupe Concept seen at last year's Frankfurt Motor Show.

While longer than the model it will replace, the new Astra five-door will benefit from a series of weight saving measures, including the latest version of GM's compact model platform, allowing it to shed some pounds over the current car.

The new Astra will welcome Opel's all-new powertrain line-up, including a 114hp (115PS) 1.0-litre, three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, and more efficient versions of the brand's 1.6-liter turbo petrol and diesel units, linked to new or improved transmissions.

Will be built outside Germany
The next generation Opel Astra has been caught on camera while undergoing testing in Germany around the Nürburgring.

Opel's all-new Astra will adopt an evolutionary design but with styling influences from the Monza concept and it also seems to sit a little bit lower than today's model. We also notice the door-mounted mirrors and a slightly longer roof spoiler together with a more prominent tailgate.

A more significant change could be the adoption of an independent rear suspension replacing the current Watts link setup. Equally as important, the seventh generation Opel Astra will be larger than the outgoing model so it should provide a more spacious interior cabin while the overall weight is expected to go down by as much as 100 kg (220 lbs). Engine lineup will likely include some of the newly developed 13 units planned to be introduced before 2016 so expect lower fuel consumption and CO2 emissions without compromising power.

It will be the first time ever when the Astra is going to be manufactured outside Germany as Opel has already confirmed plans to assemble the Astra K in Gliwice, Poland and Ellesmere Port, UK. A full reveal of the hatchback will likely occur sometime next year and will be followed by the estate, coupe and sedan, as well as a more potent OPC model.

To be built outside Germany
The 2016 Opel/Vauxhall Astra has been envisioned with a more premium exterior styling.

Opel's Astra K is set to receive a more upscale look influenced by the Monza concept and could also borrow a few styling cues from the Adam. It will be the first Astra ever to be manufactured entirely outside Germany as we already know assembly will take place in Ellesmere Port, UK and Gliwice, Poland. It is believed the vehicle will be slightly larger than today's model which should enable a more spacious interior cabin.

According to a recent report, the new Astra is set to undergo a major diet as the hatchback will drop as much as 100 kg (220 lbs). The seventh generation could also bring an independent rear suspension which will replace the Watts link setup of the current model. A newly developed six-speed manual gearbox weighing 37 kg will most likely be available and matched with a new generation of efficient four-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines. The Corsa's 115 PS 1.0-liter EcoTec three-cylinder turbocharged motor will likely be on offer as well.

First to come out will be the hatchback in the second half of 2015 before going on sale early 2016. It will be followed by wagon, coupe and sedan versions while OPC versions are also in the works to sit on top of the range. Opel has previously announced the Astra will enter production in 2015 and the K generation will last until the early 2020s.

Opel Group CEO Dr. Karl-Thomas Neumann presents a heavily camouflaged all-new next generation Astra prototype

To sit below the OPC version
British media is reporting Opel has decided to resurrect the "GSi" moniker for a potent version of the next generation Astra.

Auto Express managed to acquire a spy shot of an interesting 2016 Astra prototype featuring enlarged alloy wheels and a dual exhaust system which indicates a spicy version of the German compact hatchback is in the works. They believe Opel will bring back the "GSi" name for a higher performance Astra which will sit below the fully-fledged OPC edition that has been confirmed to have more than 280 bhp (209 kW).

The Astra GSi will reportedly develop approximately 250 bhp (186 kW) and will rival other warm hatches such as the Ford Focus ST and Volkswagen Golf GTI. The output will likely be provided by four-cylinder, 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine which could also find its way underneath the hood of a wagon Astra GSi.

The regular next-gen Opel Astra will be unveiled in September at the Frankfurt Motor Show which means this rumored GSi version won't be out sooner than 2016 while the OPC model has already been confirmed for a 2017 market launch.

2016 Opel Astra will feature IntelliLux LED Matrix Headlights

2016 Opel Astra with IntelliLux LED Matrix Light

Opel has announced the 2016 Astra will be offered with the company's new IntelliLux LED Matrix Headlights.

Each headlight uses eight individual LED segments and the system automatically adjusts the length and distribution of the light beam according to the traffic situation at hand.

As soon as the Astra leaves an urban area, the high-beams are activated and always remain on. When the Opel Eye front camera detects an oncoming vehicle, the individual LED segments that would "dazzle" the oncoming driver are automatically switched off and on as they pass.

According to studies conducted by Opel, drivers traveling at 80 km/h (49.7 mph) will be able to detect objects at the side of the road 30-40 meters (98.4-131.2 feet) sooner with IntelliLux LED Matrix Headlights than with conventional halogen or xenon low-beam lights. This gives drivers approximately 1.5 seconds of additional reaction time.

In a statement, Opel's Vice President of Vehicle Engineering, Charlie Klein, said “We are democratizing technology by making innovations affordable and bringing them to high volume vehicles. Our new LED matrix light, IntelliLux, is a perfect example." He went on to say "Our integration of the LED technology provides outstanding night time performance enhancing safety for the driver and those around them."

I really hope that this Astra will be more striking than the current model. Opel styling lately has been a bit disappointing and bland, new Corsa a snooze zzzzzz to look at!
