2016 Audi Q5 Could Get e-tron and Tri-Turbo V6 TDI Engines

The Q5 is the second SUV that Audi has ever made. Despite not having the experience of Land Rover or BMW, for example, they still managed to deliver a successful product that's very popular in America, Europe and China. Not only that, but it also served as underpinnings for the Porsche Macan.

But, since the Q5 was launched in 2008, a replacement is to be expected in the next couple of years. Until now, this project has largely been a mystery, expected but never detailed. Now a report from Automobile Magazine sheds light on the second-gen model. According to them, the replacement is going to debut in 2016 and will be based on the MLB-evo platform, shedding weight though the use of aluminum and stronger steel. A variety of new powertrains will be used, including an e-tron system and possibly a "tri-turbo" V6 TDI, like the one previewed by theRS5 TDI concept.

The Q5 is currently made in Ingolstadt for most major markets and at the Changchun factory for the Chinese one. However, the new Q5 will reportedly be assembled in Mexico, where labour is cheaper and assembly takes place closer to the US market.

Rival company BMW has recently announced it too will open a factory in Mexico, following a major investment of $1 billion. The X3, which competes with the Q5 for sales is also made in North America, at the Spartanburg factory in South Carolina.

The Q5 e-tron is something we expected from the next-gen SUV all along. This successor to the Q5 Hybrid quattrowill use a combination of 2-liter turbo engine with about 250 hp and a 109 hp (80 kW) electric motor that can power the vehicle all by itself. The electric energy will be drained off an externally rechargeable battery, just like on the A3 e-tron.

This is, of course, just one of many upcoming Audis expected to get an e-tron variant. The A6 will soon have one specifically designed to appeal to the Chinese market and the next generation Q7 and A8 are two major Audi products to get electrified models with low CO2 emissions.

Besides being lighter and more efficient, the next Audi Q5 will also be better design and equipped. LED headlights will probably become standard equipment in two years' time and so might the digital speedometer. Audi is also working to offer laser headlight technology on mass-market vehicles and has already fitted them on the limited production R8 LMX super sportscar.

Could lose up to 100 kg
The next generation Audi Q5 has been rendered in the more appealing S line trim.

Imagining the new Q5 is actually not that hard as it will be one of the last models designed before Marc Lichte took over as the man in charge of Audi's styling department, so we expect the crossover to continue with the evolutionary styling. As a consequence, don't be too surprised if the new Q5 will look a lot like a downsize Q7, as speculatively rendered in the attached illustration.

It will ride on the same MLB Evo platform as the all-new A4 (B9) and this should bring a healthy weight loss of around 100 kg (220 lbs). A rumor emerged back in 2014 indicating the availability of an e-quattro system with the combustion engine driving the front axle and an electric motor powering the rear wheels.

The engine lineup will likely be largely sourced from the A4, so there will likely be a 2.0 TFSI with 190 PS (140 kW) & 320 Nm (236 lb-ft) and 252 PS (185 kW) and 370 Nm (273 lb-ft). Audi hasn't showed us yet the 3.0 TFSI in the new A4 and chances are this will be offered in the next Q5 as well.

On the diesel side, a 2.0 TDI will get 150 PS (110 kW) & 320 Nm (236 lb-ft) and 190 PS (140 kW) and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) along with a stronger 3.0 TDI pushing out 218 PS (160 kW) & 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) and 272 PS (200 kW) & 600 Nm (443 lb-ft).

It will likely grow in size a little bit to distance itself from the Q3 and as a consequence it should come with a more spacious interior cabin, especially at the back where the passengers will enjoy additional legroom. The Audi Virtual Cockpit with its 12.3-inch fully digital and customizable instrument cluster will be available and this will eliminate some of the physical buttons and knobs to create less cluttered layout.

Since an official reveal is expected by the end of 2016, chances are a concept previewing the new Q5 will be shown early next year.

Audi is preparing to extend its RS performance car line-up with a new 450bhp-plus range-topping version of the upcomingsecond-generation Q5, sources close to the German car maker have revealed.

Planned to be introduced during the second half of 2017, the Q5 RS is being developed by Audi’s Quattro performance car division at its headquarters in Neckarsulm, Germany alongside the fourth-generation RS4 and second-generation RS5, with which it will share its engine, dual clutch S tronic gearbox and Torsen torque-sensing four-wheel drive system.

The new Q5 RS forms an integral part of plans that chairman Rupert Stadler says will enable Audi to increase its presence in the performance SUV ranks in coming years.

“We’ve identified increasing demand for performance-based SUVs in all of our key global markets. When we launched the RS Q3 we expected it to do well, but the sales have topped our expectations. We think we can build on this with a larger and more powerful model,” he said.

The Q5 RS is planned to run the same twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine set to be unveiled in the new RS4 and RS5 due out later this year.

The newly developed engine will replace Quattro’s naturally aspirated 4.2-litre V8 petrol powerplant, with a claimed output to match that of the competition package recently announced for the BMW M3 and M4at more than 450bhp.

The Q5 RS will be assembled alongside other Q5 models at Audi's new $1.3 billion manufacturing plant in San Jose Chiapa, Mexico.

Audi

Audi AG is a German automotive manufacturer of luxury vehicles headquartered in Ingolstadt, Bavaria, Germany. A subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, the company’s origins date back to the early 20th century and the initial enterprises (Horch and the Audiwerke) founded by engineer August Horch (1868–1951). Two other manufacturers (DKW and Wanderer) also contributed to the foundation of Auto Union in 1932. The modern Audi era began in the 1960s, when Volkswagen acquired Auto Union from Daimler-Benz, and merged it with NSU Motorenwerke in 1969.
