2016/2017 Hyundai Equus

WTF would buy a car like this that pretends to be a luxury car in the mould of 5 other well known brands with styling cues from each of them but cant get the details right. The badge is a mockery of a Bentleys, so many Audi, BMW and Mercedes copy points and then the back lights look like bad copy of the Jaguar XJ. If you want a cheaper luxury car why not buy an E-class, 5-series and A6 instead for the same price as this piece of crap.

Now, to play the the Devil's Advocate...

I don't think this car is complete crap. I'd wager that it's a well-engineered car as Hyundai has progressed quite well in the last 10 years. Almost shockingly so.

Seen in a vacuum, the design is not bad it's just an amalgam of signature design cues from established brands. In the grand scheme of design, it's certainly not pushing any boundaries.

In the end, all manufacturers are trying to push out a product. The more revered brands do it in a way where their marketing folks are trying to push something...an agenda, a lifestyle. And that's imbued in their design and their engineering. This Hyund.., ahem "Genesis," is just a product that's cold and heartless and blatantly unoriginal without an ounce of creativity or risk. Some folks just want something that get's them from point A to B comfortably at the lowest cost. This is their car.

Which makes even less sense.

A vehicle approaching nearly $70,000USD should be near the forefront of innovation, both design and engineering-wise.

Yes, I agree if it was competing in the executive class (E-class, 5er, etc.), but its designed to compete with an S-class (which starts at $95,000), 7er (740i starts at $82,000), etc. With a differential of $10,000 to 15,000, there are some consumers who are willing to make that concession. And those concessions being that it will still be full of features to make their occupants comfortable but most of those features are not on the bleeding edge of technology and that its design done by a committee that cherry-picked certain bits from more established marques in order to increase its appeal. Hyundai has no responsibility in advancing its heritage because in this realm it has very little heritage to speak of. Whereas M-B, BMW, et al. are blessed (and sometimes burdened) by their heritage and earned respect.

Just a thought, if the "Genesis" is now their luxury arm of the company, where the Equus and Genesis sedan will be sold under, will they continue to make and sell Kia versions of these cars? Granted, there's no Kia equivalent of the Equus, but they do have the Genesis-based Quoris/K900.

Genesis G90

This is it. Hyundai’s first ever true luxury model has made its online debut as the Genesis G90(EQ900 in South Korea).

Hyundai is ready to retire the Equus to replace it with its new G90 that serves as a flagship model part of the newly founded Genesis luxury sub-brand. It does look significantly more upscale on the outside than its predecessor thanks to an elongated hood and a prominent hexagonal grille featuring a chrome finish. Those multi-spoke wheels add a bit of style, while the vertically positioned taillights flowing down the rear end are also a nice touch. Lots of exterior metallic accents contribute to the premium feel and that sense of a more upmarket car continues on the inside.

There aren’t a lot of photos showing the cabin at this point, but from what we can see, Genesis will offer the G90 / EQ900 with a chocolate leather upholstery, lots of wood trim, and a rear-seat entertainment system with 9.2-inch tablets. The center console goes from the front all the way to the back where the rear passengers control the electrically-operated seats and numerous other functions. More importantly, there’s substantially more rear legroom as the wheelbase has been stretched by 4.5 inches (115 mm) to 124.4 inches (3160 mm).

Going through the South Korean press release (using Google Translate), we managed to find out the G90 will get a Lexicon sound system, 12.3-inch infotainment screen, wireless charging, and a three-zone “smart” climate control system. Genesis says NVH levels are down compared to the Equus and the car comes with triple door seals, double glass insulation and other tweaks to ensure a comfortable and quiet ride.

In terms of engines, the Genesis G90 will be powered by a Lambda 3.8 V6 GDi, Lambda 3.3 V6 T-GDi, and a Tau 5.0 V8. The most interesting of the bunch is the new 3.3 featuring a twin-turbo setup and pushing out 370 hp (276 kW) and 377 lb-ft (510 Nm). As you would expect, the proprietary H-TRAC permanent all-wheel drive system is implemented.

Sales of the KDM-spec Genesis EQ900 will kick off in the first half of 2016, with the international G90 arriving in the second half of the year.

Amazing, not a single shot of an upright view of the dashboard. Anyway, i think that they have made another leap in perceived quality, not only for the interior but also the exterior, the metal work is starting to give it a more proper boldness and sort of german solidity feel. The interior is a perfect blend of a 7er and an A8. I wish they would stop castrating their designers and let them design a proper identity, more in line with the smaller models. Anyway i think the last posts should be added to new official thread.

Well, is not that bad either. I actually find it nicer than the crap designs from Lexus, if I may be so bold.
On the other hand, however, the copy -erm- influence from german cars is too evident and blatant

You're right, it's not so bad. It's just sooooo shamelessly blatant in their copy and paste. If you disregard the lack of orignality, it doesn't seem like a bad place to be. In fact, they said they will use Italian leather and real wood, so kudos. But after seeing the new E-class' interior and the new S90's interior, this very much seems like it was something introduced 2 generations back instead of something that was introduced today. As I've said before, there are those who want to get from one place to another as comfortably as possible while being cost-conscious and ambivalent to the badge on the car and the baggage comes with it. This is their car.

41 bottons and 5 dials on the center stack. That is one busy layout.

The switch gear design reminds me the Aiwa NSX stereo systems of the earily 2000s.
I used to have one of those btw. Was awesome!

It is a good thing that Lexus is about the replace the ancient LS460 because this car is about to eat their lunch.

Genesis EQ900L introduced, is longer than the Mercedes-Maybach S Class

The Genesis lineup is growing literally and figuratively as the company has quietly introduced the new EQ900L in South Korea.

Essentially an extended wheelbase version of the EQ900 / G90, the EQ900L has a familiar design but adopts longer rear doors and a thicker B-pillar. The changes enable the sedan to measure 11.4 inches longer than the EQ900 and 1.6 inches longer than the Mercedes-Maybach S Class.

Since the extra room benefits rear seat passengers, it comes as little surprise that the model is equipped with an assortment of high-tech toys and amenities that will help executives to sit back and enjoy the ride. Notable highlights include a rear seat entertainment system and a full-length center console that separates two adjustable rear seats with power footrests. Occupants will also find premium leather upholstery, wood trim, and piano black accents.

Under the hood, power will be provided by a 5.0-liter Tau V8 engine that produces 425 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque.

Despite its size and luxurious accommodations, the EQ900L is a bit of a bargain as the model will reportedly cost approximately $125,000. For comparison, the Mercedes-Maybach S600 starts at $189,350.
