Lotterer, Treluyer and Fassler beat Porsche to win Spa WEC for Audi

Audi drivers Andre Lotterer, Benoit Treluyer and Marcel Fassler made it two World Endurance Championship race wins out of two after another thrilling race with Porsche.

The Audi triumphed in the Le Mans-spec, low-downforce R18 e-tron by just 13 seconds from the Porsche 919 Hybrid shared by Marc Lieb, Romain Dumas and Neel Jani.

The Porsche was the faster LMP1 car over a stint at Spa, but the Audi was quicker when it came to double-stinting its Michelin tyres. It was this that ultimately gave it victory.

Lotterer jumped the Porsche in the pits early in the fourth hour by double-stinting his tyres.

Porsche doubled next time around with Marc Lieb, but he lost out to a hard-charging Treluyer, who took the lead with an around-the-outside manouevre at Fagnes.

Jani came back at Treluyer in the penultimate hour and regained the lead for Porsche, but the Audi was back ahead at the next round of stops courtesy of doubling again.

Treluyer then kept the same tyres the short run to the flag, ensuring the victory.

"When they told me that I was going to keep the tyres for a third stint, I thought, oh!" said Treluyer.

"But that was our chance to win and I was still able to take risks in traffic and push like hell."

The top two of only three LMP1 cars to have clean races finished a lap clear of their nearest pursuer, the pole-winning Porsche shared by Brendon Hartley, Timo Bernhard and Mark Webber.

It lost time with a drive-through penalty early in the race after Hartley overshot the Bus-Stop chicane and nipped through a gap between the tyre barriers and the start of the guard rail on the start/finish straight.

The car subsequently lost more time with a damper problem, which explained the one-lap deficit at the finish.

Fourth place went to the high-downforce Audi R18 shared by Marco Bonanomi, Rene Rast and Filipe Albuquerque, which was delayed by the loss of the window from the left door.

Fifth place went to the Toyota TS040 HYBRID shared by Alex Wurz, Stephane Sarrazin and Mike Conway, which had a clean race but wasn't on the pace of the Audis or the Porsches.

The Porsche shared by Nick Tandy, Nico Hulkenberg and Earl Bamber finished three laps down in sixth after losing time to front body repairs after Tandy came together with the factory Manthey Porsche 911 RSR driven by Kevin Estre early on.

Reigning champions Anthony Davidson and Sebastien Buemi, who drove as a duo afterKazuki Nakajima was injured in free practice, finished down in eighth after suffering throttle and then electrical problems.

Audi are kicking butt, amazing they have a car which is clearly slower in a straight line than the Porsche and Toyota yet they've won the two opening races of the season. IMO they are much better at reading the race and have a better handle on the tactical aspects of the race. I would be shocked if they fail to win LeMans this year.

Here's hoping the Nissan performs and I'd love to see Mercedes, Jaguar, McLaren & Ferrari all join in with LMP1 cars. It's much better racing in more technically advanced vehicles than F1.

there's still hope, double points for 24 hours of le mans and anything can happend in 24 hours
 
Well I don't want to hope for reliability issues for Audi, Porsche and Nissan, I'd rather see Toyota win on pace or strategy.

It was interesting to see Audi and I think also Porsche have power/electronics issues where the car would just seize up and go limp, especially what happened to the #8 Audi being driven by Oliver Jarvis towards the end of the race... that thing just went straight on into the tire barriers without warning. Thankfully it was a slow section of the track. That could be a frightening issue at Le Mans.

All 3 manufacturers faced technical issues at Spa, so it could well be a battle of attrition at Le Mans. It'll be absolutely amazing to see the Porsches just blast by everyone down those long straights!
 
Makes sense! ... and just one of their three cars can keep running without issue for 24 hours, they will eat the competition!

We’ve already learned a smattering of details about Nissan’s GT-R LM NISMO endurance racer that’s set to debut at Le Mans. It’s kind of a weirdo: A twin-turbo V-6 powers the front wheels, and a spate of very outside-the-box design decisions give it a shape unlike anything else. Now Nissan is tipping its hand ever so slightly, publishing the car’s full specs ahead of its Le Mans debut.

I am really curious to see how these Nissans are going to do. Years of being indoctrinated in MR engines and RWD should have me hating it, but I got to respect this unorthodox, against-the grain gung-ho attitude that has developed this car.

I would love to see someone break up Audi's dominance. I'll be rooting for Toyota because, unless they do something absolutely radical next year, this might be the only opportunity Toyota has. Porsche are also a force to be reckoned with and if they win, I'd be cool with it. But I have more faith in Porsche coming in and doing well in subsequent years than I do have with any other team based on how well their cars run. Plus they are Porsche, it's in their DNA. If Nissan wins, it will feel like it's a paradigm shift, which fills me with unease (well, unease in the context of racing).

I know Glickenhaus wants to bring his SCG003 to LeMans this year, can he sill race it as an experimental car?
 
Unless Toyota has been sand bagging, or discovered a miracle in the last month, there is no way they're going to win it. I've been rooting for them since they returned to Le Mans, but I'm a realist. Based on their lack of competitiveness so far this season, their lack of speed will only be compounded at Le Mans. No point in hoping they win on reliability, because Audi and Porsche will each have at least 3 cars. ..no way all 6 will suffer serious issues. :(:(

Porsche's 8mJ setup will blow away Audi and Toyota on the straights, so I expect that to be enough for them to get the win, baring a stunning strategy play that Audi do so well!

Nissan, absolute wild card. Not sure how fast they will be with their 2mJ option, but it could be amazing aero wise. Looks like they'll be fielding 3 cars as well.

I guess I'll still hold hope for Toyota. ..at least until testing is done.

I keep forgetting that toyota is fielding only two cars. I am sure cost is a contraint, but is there any other reason for fielding only two cars while their major competitors are fielding three?
