2015 FIA WEC/Le Mans

I was able to watch the Eurosports broadcast throughout the day as well as listening to RadioLeMans.com. A few key points from qualifying:
  • The [HASHTAG]#18[/HASHTAG] Porsche's pole time was set in last night's session (when it was much cooler than this evening).
  • The Toyota team were not working on qualifying at all as they knew they lacked the outright pace. The teams focused purely on race runs, especially with the much warmer weather today. In fact, both Toyota's were about 2 seconds slower than their pole time of last year.
  • Jan Magnussen crashed the [HASHTAG]#63[/HASHTAG] Corvette C7.R heavily at the Porsche Curves in the second qualifying session. The team stated the cause was a stuck throttle, and due to the extensive damage they cannot get the car repaired in time, therefore the [HASHTAG]#63[/HASHTAG] has been withdrawn.
  • It is anticipated next year we will see limitations placed on the speed of the LMP1 cars, therefore Neel Jani's new lap record could stand for quite some time.

Ford Performance has, at long last, officially confirmed its racing program on Friday at Le Mans, with the launch of the GTE specification Ford GT.

“We’re back. We’re back at Le Mans, and we’re back with a supercar,” said Ford Executive Chairman Bill Ford Jr.

It will see the manufacturer return to the 24 Hours of Le Mans, 50 years after Ford became the first American manufacturer to win overall at Le Mans.

The two-car Ford GT factory effort will run in the FIA World Endurance Championship.

Additionally, there will also be a two-car Ford GT effort in the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship, run by Chip Ganassi Racing. Ganassi was a special guest during today’s presentation.

“We’ve never run at Le Mans. I can tell you we want to win this race,” Ganassi said.

“When Ford presented us that opporunity, a chance to compete here, well what race team wouldn’t want to be a part of that?”

“Our plan is to debut a new WEC team and TUDOR team and will see its debut for the first time at the 24 Hours of Daytona.”

Ganassi did not announce any drivers but said, “There’s quite a line forming outside the door.”

The road car version was announced in January at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, but official confirmation of the program was pushed back until now.

Ford, who will serve as this year’s starter of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Mark Fields, Ford President/CEO and Raj Nair, group vice president of Ford Product Development, all were on hand at the announcement.

PRESS RELEASE

Ford Returning to Le Mans in 2016 with All-New Ford GT, Marking 50th Anniversary of 1966 Victory
  • Ford returns to Le Mans in 2016 with the all-new Ford GT supercar to compete in LM GTE Pro class, commemorating the 50th anniversary of Ford's 1966 overall victory
  • All-new Ford factory program to compete in both the FIA World Endurance Championship and TUDOR United SportsCar Championship with a two-team, four-car effort – operated by Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates
  • Ford GT is company's showcase for aerodynamics and lightweight carbon fibre construction, along with new twin-turbocharged Ford EcoBoost V6 – most powerful EcoBoost production engine ever

LE MANS, France, June 12, 2015 – Ford announced today it is returning to one of the most prestigious automobile races in the world with its new Ford GT race car, based on the all-new ultra-high-performance supercar that goes on sale next year.

The Ford GT race car will compete in the 24 Hours of Le Mans – referred to by many as the Grand Prix of Endurance and Efficiency – starting next year. Revealed today at the famous circuit in Le Mans, France, Ford GT will compete in the Le Mans GT Endurance class for professional teams and drivers (LM GTE Pro).

The new race car – a further proof point of Ford innovation – is based on the all-new Ford GT supercar unveiled in January. Both the production car and race car will arrive in 2016 to mark the 50th anniversary of Ford GT race cars placing 1-2-3 at the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans. Ford went on to repeat its victory at Le Mans in 1967, 1968 and 1969.

"When the GT40 competed at Le Mans in the 1960s, Henry Ford II sought to prove Ford could beat endurance racing's most legendary manufacturers," said Bill Ford, executive chairman, Ford Motor Company. "We are still extremely proud of having won this iconic race four times in a row, and that same spirit that drove the innovation behind the first Ford GT still drives us today."

The new Ford GT race car will run the full 2016 schedules of the FIA World Endurance Championship and TUDOR United SportsCar Championship, making its competition debut in January 2016 in the Rolex 24 At Daytona, Florida. The two Ford teams will be operated by Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates (CGRFS). Both series teams intend to compete with a four-car effort at Le Mans. Drivers will be announced later.

The all-new Ford GT serves as the pinnacle product of the new Ford Performance group, a division dedicated to providing innovation through performance.

Set to deliver more than 12 new performance vehicles by 2020, Ford Performance will leverage its racing efforts and expertise to speed innovations on dedicated performance models and performance parts in order to more quickly iterate the latest technologies that can ultimately be applied to the full Ford vehicle line-up.

The performance segment is a growing business for Ford, as the company recognises its customers' desire for vehicles that offer excellent fuel economy, leading technology and a great driving experience. The Ford Performance line-up includes Ford GT, Focus RS, F-150 Raptor, Shelby GT350 and Shelby GT350R, Focus ST and Fiesta ST.

"Ford remains focused on three priorities globally – accelerating our One Ford plan, delivering product excellence with passion and driving innovation in every part of our business," said Mark Fields, Ford Motor Company president and CEO. "All three came together to create the new Ford GT. We also know from our rich history in motorsports that world-class competition is a great incubator for even further product innovation."

The Ford GT race car features a number of innovations Ford believes will not only make it competitive in LM GTE Pro, but ultimately positioned to provide benefits to each vehicle in the Ford line-up. These include state-of-the-art aerodynamics to deliver outstanding levels of downforce for improved stability with minimal drag, advanced lightweight composites featuring carbon fibre for an exceptionally rigid but light chassis, and the power and efficiency of EcoBoost technology.

"As we developed the Ford GT, from the outset, we wanted to ensure we had a car that has what it takes to return Ford to the world of GT racing," said Raj Nair, Ford Motor Company group vice president, Global Product Development and chief technical officer. "We believe the Ford GT's advances in aerodynamics, light-weighting and EcoBoost power will make for a compelling race car that can once again compete on a global stage."

Joining Ford in this project are Multimatic Motorsports, Roush Yates Engines, Castrol, Michelin, Forza Motorsport, Sparco, Brembo and CGRFS. The race car has undergone extensive design and testing within Ford and Multimatic, with CGRFS providing input into the development. Roush Yates is supporting development of the 3.5-litre EcoBoost V6 – the most powerful EcoBoost production engine ever.

The 3.5-litre EcoBoost V6 engine debuted in the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship in 2014. Since then, Ford, with CGRFS, has captured significant overall wins at the 12 Hours of Sebring and Rolex 24 At Daytona. Besides great success in sports cars, Ganassi race teams achieved major victories in the Daytona 500, Brickyard 400 and Indianapolis 500.

"We've won races and championships, but we've never run Le Mans," said team owner Chip Ganassi. "When presented the opportunity to compete with the all-new Ford GT on the world's biggest sports car stage, and on the 50th anniversary of one of the most storied victories in racing history, how could any race team not want to be part of that? Will it be a challenge? Absolutely, but we couldn't be with a better partner than Ford."

Does anyone know of a timing/tracking website thats better than the one the ACO and WEC provide? Something that shows sector times?

Any links would be greatly appreciated!

A good race so far, I can't help feeling Audi has this one in the bag, race pace they aren't any slower than the 919, if car 8 hadn't had it's little crash there would be 3 Audi's in the top 5.

Porsche lead with a two cars in the Le Mans after 20 hours. Well, I'm not a surprised about that. The Porsche has dominate almost a whole race in there. In Silverstone and Spa Audi won, after that Porsche got + 1350 hp. Audi has under 900 hp, only. So obviously the Porsche dominate in race with the better power/weight ratio. The Porsches are so fast in the straight lines. So no doubt which going to win in the Le Mans as well. Hope so in next season, Audi get + 1000 hp.

The [HASHTAG]#19[/HASHTAG] Porsche ran an absolutely perfect race. I'm stunned at it's faultless race. [HASHTAG]#17[/HASHTAG] also ran a mechanically faultless race. Crazy how much Porsche enhanced the 919, yet made them bulletproof! The Boss of Le Mans is back!

The Audi's set the fastest lap and had the top speed, but their issues cost them.

Toyota. .... :(

Nissan. Still early, but that was not pretty for them.

Disappointing race for me as a Toyota fan, but the race was typical Le Mans. The rest of the WEC season will be an epic battle between Porsche and Audi.

Stunned at the poor showing in the GT-Pro field. That is usually THE most competitive and close-fought classes, but this year it was all about survival.

as expected the nissans had the typical new car symptoms (lots of faults) which porsche and toyota suffered from last year

I'm so glad that Porsche won. I'm even happier that Patrick Dempsey finally got a podium. He deserves it. He worked his *ss off to get to be ready for that race.

anyone else done an all-nighter

Yup. I woke up a little late so only watched 23 hours.

Toyota didn't suffer from new car faults last year. A spec part that the ACO gave them was what failed last year and that took out the lead Toyota.

The Nissans we just flat out slow even when they were running without problems. You should have seen how much harder the drivers of the Nissan were working just to get that car to turn into a corner (especially in the Porsche Curves).

heard from the commentators that they couldn't get their ERS system working so they were running purely on the ICE

Watched almost the whole thing from hour 8 onwards. Good race and very happy that Hulkenburg won.
All the Porsches and the Audis pretty much had the same race pace - around 3.20s. So it was really down to who had least issues. And the Audis had more issues.

Nissans were a joke, even dangerous. They were just moving pylons for the LMP2 cars around the corners. They single handedly made FWD mean "Fail Wheel Drive".
