Stuttgart – The Sprinter is celebrating its birthday – and everyone is invited to join the party. When it made its debut in 1995, it marked the start of a new era for vans: this highly successful model from Mercedes-Benz Vans has long since become synonymous with a particular breed of van with a gross vehicle weight of around 3.5 t. To date, some 2.9 million Sprinter models have been built which are in service in over 150 markets worldwide. To mark the anniversary of its best-seller, Mercedes-Benz has brought out a highly attractive special model – the exclusively equipped “Edition Sprinter”.

The “Edition Sprinter” is available for the panel van and crewbus variants in the colour brilliant silver metallic. The Edition model’s bumpers are painted in the same colour – a first for the Sprinter. The same can be said of the black tinted tail lights and black 16-inch light-alloy wheels. Alternatively, the “Edition Sprinter” is also available with silver gleaming 17-inch light-alloy wheels.

The special model’s standout visual features also include bi-xenon headlamps and a chromed radiator grille. The “Edition Sprinter” lettering on the flank is another clear sign of the model’s special status.

Inside, the driver is welcomed by floor mats with exclusive “Edition Sprinter” labelling. The Sprinter crewbus variant additionally comes equipped with a top-class leather steering wheel plus dark-tinted windows in the rear.

Special model limited to a run of 2000 units, price saving of 50 percent

The “Edition Sprinter” is limited to a run of 2000 units and goes into production as from June. The special model will go on sale in 19 countries in Europe, from Sweden to Spain and from France to Hungary. All engine variants are available.

In Germany, the “Edition Sprinter” package in panel van guise is priced at 2300 euros (plus VAT). Compared to ordering the optional extras individually, this represents a price saving of around 50 percent.

Mercedes Sprinter WORKER heading to Chicago (89 photos)
Mercedes-Benz is introducing the Sprinter WORKER during the Chicago Auto Show.

It will be the third member of the Sprinter Van family, which already consists of the 2500 and heavy-duty 3500 models. The German automaker says the new Sprinter WORKER offers “the simplest and most straightforward equipment” and is targeting the heart of the commercial van market for “plumbers, electricians, general contractors, and HVAC specialists.”

Designed with input from dealers and customers, the van has a 144-inch wheelbase and a standard-height roof. It boasts a 137.4-inch cargo floor length, 66.5-inch interior standing height, and 319.1-cubic-feet of cargo volume. The maximum towing capacity is 5,000 lbs, while the peak payload is 3,512 lbs.

Power is provided by a four-cylinder diesel engine, producing 161 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque. The unit is paired with a 7G-TRONIC seven-speed automatic transmission with two clutches, providing an average fuel consumption of “well over” 23 miles per gallon.

The entry-level model comes equipped with power windows, A/C, tilting and telescoping steering wheel, five cup-holders, adjustable armrests, ample storage, and a standard four-speaker audio system as standard.

Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Extreme Concept Ready to Take On Tyrannosaurus
Sprinter 3500 Cab Chassis Lifted and Tuned by RENNtech

Looking more appropriate to a dinosaur-movie set than a Mercedes-Benz dealership, we’re not quite sure what to make of the Sprinter Extreme. While rare here, in Europe, the Cab Chassis base is pure work-truck, as the Sprinter gets put to task in a variety of capacities including shuttle service, sanitation, and car hauling. But the Sprinter Extreme is no mere Cab Chassis.

Tuned by RENNtech using a standard Mercedes-Benz 3500 Cab Chassis, the Sprinter Extreme gets a suspension lift, beadlock wheels mounted on off-road tires (dualie in back), and revised bodywork to provide wheel clearance. A custom roof rack with off-road driving lights and spotlights sits over the cab, while a front brush guard, fog lights, and winch give the front underbody added protection from little carnivores.

The whole truck sports a jungle-ready green vinyl wrap, but unfortunately, the bodywork also gets simulated mud graphics. Faux mud on such a capable-looking truck is almost unforgivable, but since this is just a concept, we suppose we’ll let it slide. Still, we wish Benz would have just wrapped it green, then given us a chance to apply some genuine mud to its utilitarian flanks. One so-tacky-they’re-cool modification is the use of chromed exhaust stacks sprouting from either side of the cab. We really, really like the pipes, even if they’re more Deliverance than The Lost World: Jurassic Park.

Mercedes built the Extreme concept to draw attention to the versatility of its Cab Chassis. The Sprinter Cab Chassis can handle a payload of 6,400 pounds, with a maximum towing capacity of 7,500 pounds. As expected of a Benz, safety is an important feature, and the company is keen to point out the truck’s standard Load Adaptive ESP, a stability control system that automatically adjusts its inputs based on loaded weight and center of gravity. Pretty trick for such a heavy-hauling van.

By pairing Benz customers with productivity solutions unique to their needs, MasterUpfitter helps reduce a lot of the stress of adding a special vehicle to a fleet.

More power and payload for the Sprinter: the best-seller now with added payload, versatility and power
  • A new variant of the best-seller from Mercedes-Benz Vans with a gross vehicle weight of 5.5 t is being launched to accommodate customers' demands more effectively
  • The new gross vehicle weight obviates the need for special arrangements for converted models above the previous weight limit and reduces red tape
  • Two new engine variants improve the van's performance and offer more tractive power for towing trailers
Stuttgart – Mercedes-Benz Vans presents the Sprinter in a higher weight class and with new engine ratings. The new variant of the best-seller is approved for a gross weight of 5.5 t – half a tonne above the former upper limit. In comparison to the previous top-of-the-range model, this heavy-duty Sprinter offers a 450 kg increase in load capacity, resulting in a total payload of between 2.95 t and 3.41 t, depending on the model.

New conversion options in accordance with customers' demands

The new variant broadens the diverse Sprinter model range, which now comprises vans with a gross weight ranging from 3 t to 5.5 t.

According to Norbert Kunz, Head of Sprinter Product Management, the new 5.5 t variant has been developed specifically in response to customers' wishes: "Customers operating in weight-sensitive areas in particular have often expressed a demand for a version with a higher payload. Such areas include the building sector or public service vehicles, for example. More payload is equally a boon for passenger transport. Wherever a particularly good ratio is desired between kerb weight and payload, we now have an appropriate solution at hand. At the same time, the Sprinter is also very compact and agile. It offers good dynamics and a passenger car like feel at the wheel – even with a gross weight of 5.5 t. This is important in urban traffic, for example – just consider low entrances, narrow lanes or difficult parking situations. It is quite clear that this Sprinter is unbeatable in its class when it comes to everyday practicality."

More straightforward procedures for common bodybuilder models

The new gross vehicle weight is aimed first and foremost at end customers who require special body and conversion solutions for their operations. So far, special arrangements were often necessary for ambulances, fire service vehicles and other special vehicles, when the conversion resulted in a gross weight above the previous limit of 5 t. The new variant obviates the need for such arrangements.

Peter Strobach, Head of the Mercedes-Benz Bodybuilder Centre, regards this as a crucial benefit: "Our 5.5 t Sprinter avoids additional work for our customers from the body and conversion sector. The required body can now be ordered in the customary, routine manner – with no need for individual approvals."

Two new engine variants

In addition to the new 5.5 t variant, Mercedes-Benz Vans will offer new engine variants for the Sprinter as of summer 2016. The entry-level model now produces an output of 84 kW (114 hp) as opposed to the previous 70 kW. The next-highest power rating has been upgraded from 95 kW to 105 kW (143 hp). The Sprinter also remains available with the 120 kW (163 hp) and 140 kW (190 hp) engine variants. All engine variants comply with the Euro 6/VI emissions standards, which will become mandatory for vans in the mid-range weight class from September.

Apart from more power, the new engine variants also offer a significant increase in torque, which is manifested above all in more tractive power. This is particularly important when towing a trailer, which is a major consideration for traders, construction firms and in the horticultural and landscaping sectors.
