F1 2012 US GP

Formula 1 news, races, teams, drivers, technology, strategy, and discussion.
US should not host F1 race, first not much interest from fans to go and participate in event, next reason is TV transmission live from circuit NO TV STATION IN NORTH AMERICA was transmitting this spectacular event. It sucks. All N. America was watching American football. It's disgusting. I could only watch it on TSN2 23:20 same day. No live transmission, how you can bring new fans attention to the event?
Race was great. I'm glad then WC race is still on. (y)

I have over 8 hours of this past weekend on my DVR. This year all races were covered, most on Speed channel and five on main Fox. Next year five on main NBC and the rest on NBC sports. But yes it needs to be covered better, this race should have been on both Speed and Fox.
I like that Bernie has said that the US could host 5 or 6 races.

There were people from all 50 states and 52 countries there.

You right broadcasting is rather poor in the US which means that not enough people have the chance to watch the race. Hence the reason why there weren't any American title sponsors. F1 is simply too niche compared with college football and basket ball which are watched by tens of millions.

F1 is not really competing against NFL, college football or any of the other traditional American sports. F1 is competing with NASCAR.

Motor sport in America is NASCAR. In fact, NASCAR is second only to NFL in terms of television audiences of professional sports. NASCAR holds 17 of the top 20 single-day attended sports events in the world. More Fortune 500 companies sponsor NASCAR than any other motorsport. The stats go on and on, and yet I sincerely doubt most NASCAR fans could name a single F1 driver, except maybe Michael Schumacher and possibly Lewis Hamilton due to his relationship with Nicole "Pussy Cat Doll".

The final race of the Sprint Cup Series, the top NASCAR competition, commenced in Miami at precisely the same time as the US Grand Prix in Austin last Sunday. Formula One doesn't stand a chance of competing against that.

Perhaps 1-2 more races in the US will give the people more reasons to get involved because in recent years, the Brazilian and Canadian GP are the only races that take place during social hours for the US crowd.

Some fun photos from the race:

You could be right. That is surely another reason why F1 struggles in the U.S.

Well, in 2014 they should have the Grand Prix of the Americas in New Jersey, finally, which will give four races in appropriate time zones. Montreal, Austin, New Jersey and Sao Paulo. And I've heard rumours of F1 returning to Mexico and also a street race around the docks in Buenos Aires.

Yupp All those races should make F1 more relevant to the American continents. The only missing ingredient is an American driver.

Lool hahaha, there's already one, and his name is Alexander Rossi... Hes a test driver for caterham.

Sadly he will remain a a test driver unless he finds sponsors willing to back with with 20-30 million for a seat.

Thanks. I question some of those stats though. For example, it lists the highest attendance for NASCAR as the Daytona 500 with 198,000 people, when in fact the Brickyard 400 in Indianapolis typically has around 400,000 people there. And the Australian GP is listed as 298,000 people, yet that is over the whole weekend. For the race it's around 100,000 people.

It was interesting overhearing some of the people at the race.

Announcer is talking about Michael Schumacher. Kid... "I thought Michael Schumacher retired"
Guy a few rows in front of me. "What driver is on that guys shirt? Michael... Michael...Michael S...
Guy a few rows in front of me. "What team does that guy like?" (Mercedes) "What cars is that?"

There should be a F1 vs NASCRAP race at the end of each year. Have it at Indy using a compromise between the oval and F1 track. It would be fun to watch the F1 cars crush the NASCARS, well unless the Nascars ran over the F1 cars.
