When Mercedes handed us the keys to the SLK55 AMG and asked us to drive it to a race track two hours south of the Golden Gate Bridge, we knew we'd be experiencing a certain corkscrew. That corkscrew wound up being the kind used to open bottles of wine at dinner that evening, not the famed corner with the big vertical drop. That we drove the SLK to a race track - but not on the race track - is telling.

It's not for a lack of capability, mind you. The SLK55 AMG slings itself to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds, accompanied by the screams of 415 combusting horses racing out of its quad chromeexhaust pipes. Cornering forces are no match for the stiff suspension, which never quite settles down on bumpy roads but refuses to relinquish grip over the worst broken pavement. The oversize brakes easily shave off the 3527-lb SLK's copious speed again and again, and the computer will even grab one of the rear rotors to help rotate the little roadster on turn-in. The steering is well-weighted, accurate, quick and communicative. Dynamically, the SLK leaves very little to be desired. That's not a surprise. Our surprise was Mercedes' focus on improving fuel economy -- and particularly, the company's unique method of chasing improvements. While the rest of the world, including Mercedes itself, is downsizing and turbocharging, the Swabians engineered a big, new, normally aspirated V-8 for the SLK. This isn't the old three-valve 5.4-liter "55" engine, nor is it a smaller version of the AMG-designed 6.2-liter "63" engine. The SLK55's V-8, code name M152, is a turboless version of the 5.5-liter twin-turbo M157 V-8s we're seeing elsewhere in the Benz lineup. In place of turbos for more power, the 7200-rpm brute uses cylinder deactivation for better fuel economy.Under light loads between 800 and 3600 rpm and with the convertible roof in place, the V-8 can disable cylinders 2, 3, 5, and 8 by parking those cylinders' valves and cutting spark and fuel. The transition is completely imperceptible save for a telltale indicator on the dash, and the engine can deliver up to 170 lb-ft of torque running on half its cylinders. Bringing all eight cylinders back to life can be accomplished in as little as 30 milliseconds, says Mercedes, and astute drivers will feel the resurrection in the form of a very slight nudge not unlike that of a torque converter unlocking. They should also notice a difference at the pump. Combined with other fuel-savings measures (like direct injection, automatic start/stop and a hydraulic power steering pump that, according to Mercedes, only uses power when needed), the new SLK55 should deliver considerably improved fuel economy compared with the last SLK55. That is, of course, despite 60 additional hp and with no sacrifice to the throbbing V-8 soundtrack. With the BMW Z4 no longer chasing after the Porsche Boxster for all-around performance, Mercedes-Benz's little roadster has also been able to relax. That's true of the four-cylinder SLK250 and the V-6 SLK350, and especially so of the V-8 SLK55 AMG. We'd bet good money that the baby AMG roadster would be a riot around a race track, but kudos to Mercedes for acknowledging that it'll probably never happen. No, the focus was on preserving the V-8's acoustic experience and saving some fuel in the process. More miles per gallon means more pocket money for a sumptuous dinner and an exquisite glass of wine after a thrilling, top-down, back-road drive -- which is precisely what SLK55 AMG customers will be looking forward to doing.

Should I buy one?
If you like the idea of big open air performance without the usual penalty of sub 25mpg fuel economy, sure. The virtues of AMG Mercs often take longer than the usual test route to present themselves to the driver, and it’s very possible that this SLK would wind up being a highly satisfying car to own for all sorts of reasons.
But it’s still not a particularly engaging machine to drive, and even accounting for the other advances, keen drivers can’t fail to be disappointed by that.

^Why?..if you're talking about looks it's subjective and if you mean handling well it's no Porsche but it's lacking either.IMO it's a gorgeous little masculine roadster with a marvelous V8.:)

Thing is though. C63 havent been accused of being an un-engaging car. Sounds like MB havent put the same effort they did with C63. A smaller and lighter car should be a better drive than a larger car but unlike C63, SLK fail.

These two reviews are a HUGE punch on MB/AMG stomach. And I could not agree more. The baby AMG is really last in the list of importance in the MB/AMG department and it shows on these reviews. It suffers from IDENTITY. Its got a huge motor BUT it lacks the technology and structure to take advantage of such a great motor. The "lets save fuel" is just sad! huge fail. Anybody with a brain can figure out that this car lacks objective. Why on earth would I want to "cruise in the backroads" or in the city with such a wonderful V8AMG motor??? 350 SLK---hello?? The 350 will save fuel and money (insurance costs, to name one...)
Very very sad reviews...so sad that they did not even post a video, and they did not even bother to mention about gear changes (speed), handling obviously poor (but reviewers did try to be nice/politically correct, on this aspect), the more I read those reviews the less interested I become in upgrading my "old" SLK55.
To add to the disappointed. I am invited to the unveiling of several AMGs this week and GUESS WHAT? NO, SLK55 AMG---- go figure.... but there will be C63 ML AMG SLS roadster ( and will certainly be signing to test drive the C63 and the SLS roadster) really leaning towards the C 63 AMG...........
One more thing, watch how those SLK orders start to go down...Mercedes Benz is making a huge mistake in under estimating the power of the INTERNET. HUGE MISTAKE:

Could someone summary this:
"Better riding or not, no SLK55 AMG – on this evidence – will have the precise body control and interactive, engaging drive of the class’ effervescent and evergreen dynamic standard-bearer – the Porsche Boxster S. Inconsistent steering weight, little steering feel, some noticeable low-frequency body pitch, and an otherwsie stable but inert and uninspiring chassis still ultimately separate this car not just from the Porsche, but at this price level, from the likes of the very sweetly suspended Jaguar XK." (from: Mercedes SLK55 AMG - Road Test First Drive - Autocar.co.uk )

And one last thing to show that nothing --in the essence of things--- has changed for the SLK55 thus far, and the story of many years ago has not changed one BIT, but only to have the Boxter S come back and beat again the SLK55 AMG with superb handling--need I go through the list---dont think so.
Enjoy! this retro video......... A G A I N: Thats all folks! over and out.

You don't think much of anything of the SLK, we get it.

You certainly missed my point Merc1. I have an SLK55 AMG (and luv my car) but as an owner I was so much looking forward to the "new" one, and I had really hoped that this new version will be a STEP FOWARD--BUT.....oh well.
I think you get it--- I would not say "We get it".

My two cents--(2)
ps: I think straight line performance this car will just about destroy 911s:D

Why do you just drive the car for yourself before forming these conclusions and all these rants.

2 lackluster reviews aren't the end of the world, nor do they mean the car won't sell.

If that were the case the new Jetta would be a flop, but it has been just the opposite.

Drive the car yourself and form your own conclusion. All this humdrum talk and its a fail this and that is really silly IMO.

It will NEVER beat the boxster, nothing in the segment does. The BMW Z4 has also been panned for not being anything to drive.

The Z4 is a way better drivers car.
You have to drive the SLK and you'll see it's really not worth the money ;)
SLK was always a hard sell(not only for me) and this one will be the same for a reason.
I like the old one design wise but this one is a big fail all around. A good engine doesn't make a good car ;)

I remember SLK always selling better than Z4. Besides new Z4 is getting same reviews - more comfort, less sport and agression

True but it also been said its better drive than SLK according to the comparions I've read. Boxster still the best though. My biggest concern with Z4, its gained 120 kg over-weight compare to previous version.

No disagreement about that. I reckon the previous z4 was aslo better to drive.

I've driven both generations and previous Z4 has much stiffer suspension and better steering. New one looks better though. I hope to see a Z4 with fixed roof someday to save weight.

Uh...Rich55, if you haven't noticed, car mags have said the same things about your SLK55 as well. Your Merc wasn't better than the competitors back then, just saying.
