F1 teams hit with dramatic 2013 entry fee hike

Formula 1 teams have been officially notified of a dramatic rise in the entry fees for next year's world championship, as AUTOSPORT predicted in September.

After much discussion about the matter in recent weeks - with teams seeking clarification on why the costs were going up - the FIA has finally revised its sporting regulations to confirm the scale of the increase.

As previously reported, the governing body amended the original plan to include a system whereby the champion outfit pays a premium price.

Under Appendix 7 of the newly published 2013 Sporting Regulations, the governing body states that there will be two levels of fees for teams.

The constructors' champions will have to pay a base $500,000 US plus $6000 US per point gained in the standings.

Every other team that wants to enter will have to pay the basic $500,000 US plus $5000 US per point.

Looking at last year's world championship standings, it means teams will see their entry fee costs rise from last year's standard rate of 309,000 Euro ($397,899) to:
Red Bull (650 points) $4.400 million
McLaren (497 points) $2.985 million
Ferrari (375 points) $2.375 million
Mercedes (165 points) $1.325 million
Lotus (73 points) $865,000
Force India (69 points) $845,000
Sauber (44 points) $720,000
Toro Rosso (41 points) $705,000
Williams (5 points) $525,000
Caterham (0 points) $500,000
HRT (0 points) $500,000
Marussia (0 points) $500,000
The updated Sporting Regulations do not lay out a final entry deadline for teams, but do state that teams must pay the entry fee by November 30.

The FIA's decision to increase entry fees comes amid a push by the governing body to increase the revenue it gets from the sport - with it believed to be chasing a total income of $40 million per season as part of a new commercial structure.

The total revenue generated by the entry fees will be at least $16.3 million, with AUTOSPORT also understanding that the governing body is close to agreeing a $24 million payment from commercial supremo Bernie Ecclestone as part of a Concorde Agreement deal.

These payments, allied to an increase in F1 Super Licence fees for drivers, will help the FIA hit its revenue target.

Nico Hulkenberg: Leaving Force India for Sauber was tough choice

Nico Hulkenberg admits it was not an easy decision to leave Force India to join rival Sauber for the 2013 Formula 1 season.
The Hinwil squad confirmed on Wednesday that the 25-year-old German will join its line-up after two years with Force India, the first as a reserve driver.
Sauber is enjoying its strongest season to date, having been on the podium four times in 17 races, while Force India is yet to finish in the top three this year.
The Silverstone-based outfit has, however, outscored Sauber since the summer break, scoring 47 points to the Swiss team's 36.
"It wasn't an easy decision, first of all," Hulkenberg told reporters in Abu Dhabi. "I think Sauber made a good development the last couple of years, especially this year.
"They have been very strong this year for podiums, missed the win by a very narrow margin only, so that is why. Otherwise I would not have made the decision if I thought it wasn't the right one.
"Obviously Sauber has a good car this year and hopefully it has a good car next year where we can fight for good positions."
Force India is still aiming to beat Sauber in the constructors' championship, where it trails its rival by 23 points.
Hulkenberg says that as long as he is a Force India driver he will have no qualms in giving it all to beat his future team.
"It is not different to before, to be honest," he added. "I am fully committed to Force India, we have three more races to go. And I look forward to the new challenge, the new contract but also I look forward to doing the last few races here. I am fully motivated and will give everything."
The German, who has linked with Felipe Massa's seat at Ferrari before the Brazilian got a contract extension, denied that he had any links to the Italian squad as part of the deal with Sauber, which uses Ferrari engines.
He admitted, however, that he had discussion with the Maranello team.
"There were talks and there was some contact," he said.

Well isn't this interesting with Maldonado right at the top of the grid. Also Vettel didn't make it back to the pit after his final qualifying lap, I wonder what happened, and what kind of reason/excuses Red Bull will come up with.

I don't even know why they risked sending him out a second time. His first time was easily good for 2nd or 3rd.

Definitely the best race of the season so far. Congrats to Kimi and fantastic strategy and position for Vettel.

Yes, amazing race!
Not a good result for Alonso but it could've been worse... still in the game tho :)

Poor Hamilton, seems to be getting the worst of McLaren's reliability problems.

What is wrong with Mclaren and their gearbox issues? How many race wins and points has it cost both Lewis and Jenson? The curse of Sam Michael continues. I cannot believe what happened in the race, even when Vettel was sent to the back of the grid, almost everyone in front of him decided to take each other out, or retire during this race, and if that wasn't enough the safety car was deployed at the exact moment when Vettel needed it the most. He was 22 sec behind Jenson after his 2nd pit stop but the safety car was deployed the lap later, which reduced that gap between the two down to 2 to 3 sec. It was absolutely wonderful to hear the chat between Kimi and his race engineer, he does all the talking on the track. Yet again Alonso extracted the absolute maximum from his Ferrari somehow.

lol Kimi is a boss!
