May I ask who here has actually seem either of these cars in the fresh? If the answer is no and it's all based of photo images then I don't think it's truly fair to judge. I've only seen the A7 so far, so I am trying to compare what I know with what I think of the Merc based in the press releases. I might find that in person the CLS doesn't look that great.

Easiest decision in a while. CLS. It's the king of its class - even the Gran Coupe will have its work cut out for it as the CLS remains the benchmark in this niche.

No problems expected there. The GC is a clay model. Just wait until you see a real car in press pics with added computer effects, like this CLS here.

Sorry, CLS is very nice. But that's it. It's not even got a coupé shape anymore. I have no doubt WHATSOEVER that the 6er GC will look vetter from every angle inside out :D
And yes you guys heard it right, no doubt AT ALL.

But this thread is about the CLS vs A7, both officially introduced and production ready. Best to leave the 6er GC wayyyy out of this for the time being.

The majority of people haven't seen either cars in the flesh but this it doesn't prevent people from making judgement because most people are in the same situation, they can only judge the cars from the photos. Also, it is the company's responsibilities to depict the cars in its best possible appearance in these press release photos. It is true that the cars might look different in the metal, but it could look better or worse, which can be applied to either the CLS, or the A7.

People can still have their say right now, and I am sure they will voice their opinions of the cars again once they have seen them on the road, in a few months time.

How about the "dark horse" waiting in the shadows...

AND it's a fact BMW has their work cut out for them! This CLS - especially the interior trim quality is a hard act to follow. This new Benz is not just a good benchmark it's THE benchmark...let's call this one a 'dare'!?;):D
I would love for my brand to produce a 4 door coupe of such high standard as the new CLS:t-cheers:

Talking of interior quality....the A7 falls WAY short in the trim quality, especially the top half/leather covered part of the dash....SLS now CLS the Star is shining ever more brightly and they showcase the "The best or nothing" slogan perfectly! :usa7uh:...Now coming from a BMW guy this says alot;)

That's the situation I'm in at the moment, I've only seen the A7 and while I rate it better looking than the current CLS I'm not so sure it will look as good as the new one. Another thing, the rear is odd to me at the moment but with familiarity I and many others might appreciate it a lot more. The same thing is happening at the moment with the Jaguar XJ, the more you see it the more elegant and desirable it's shape becomes.

I suppose only time will tell with each of these designs.

Forgive me! OFF TOPIC for a second.

I was in Bloemfontein the past weekend and pulled in at the Jaguar/Land Rover dealer there to feast my eyes on the new XJ. There was a white one and a jet-black one....unfortunately I expected more. The car is different, looks good from some angles and bad from others. I am not a fan of the new A8 but would honestly have the A8 to the Jag;)
The CLS is a instant hit IMO.

My point exactly, I too looked at it at first and thought it was odd but now that I have seen it on numerous occasions I rate it the best looking in this class by far.

The same will be true for the A7, as it's design is more unique compared to the familiar design that is the CLS. It will probably take time for it to win people over.

I know the 6er GC will be stunning outside, BMW has to at least match the tactile quality of the CLS's interior trim and finish:t-cheers:

Are these priced directly against each other?

I'm a big fan of the A7's exterior. But the interior just doesn't look like an Audi at all. I see more BMW in it than anything. And its completely abandoned Audi's form driven by function approach and now is just designed for designs sake. It's quite a mess of lines and shapes.
i think the cls v8 will compete with the s7

I read a swedish comparison with A7 vs CLS vs Panamera.

Panamera, third place - sportiest car
CLS, second place - They really didnt like the steering at all.
A7, first place - More entertaining to drive and more comfortable than CLS. Best allrounder.

Not at all.

Not an entire transcript, but the important parts. Here we go:

- Though based on the E-class, the CLS doesn't feel like it, but like a unique model. He likes that. A7 is too much like A6.

- In the A7, it's the opposite; inside it feels like being in A6

- Merc steering feel is lighter than from A7. But once you hit a corner, the car feel really good and sporty and dynamic. Airmatic feels really good, and you just don't feel like being in an E-class, which handles worse.

- The A7 is typical Audi, don't look for a surprise. The car is smooth, not enough feeling in the steering though. Even in dynamic mode the steering is too light. Engine is really good and praised.

- A7 feels more alive and faster, due to compressor. But the Merc is basicly just as fast, and he likes the new MB V6 a lot too.

- CLS is the most surprising vehicle, with a very big improvement over the E-class. Though subjective, he likes the CLS design better too.

- In the end, no clear winner, though the A7 appears to have a slight edge overal (little more dynamic, little more comfort, yet boring to drive and just like all the other Audi cars)

So he liked the CLS more than both A7 and Panamera? Interesting. Same goes for a review in Norway.
