Christian Rosenkranz, of Johnson Controls, speaks Monday during the 2010 North American International Auto Show in Detroit about lithium-ion batteries that Johnson Controls plans to produce in Holland.

DETROIT -- Some of the brightest ideas for automotive power at the North American International Auto Show, including battery cells that will soon be built in Holland, ended up in the basement of Cobo Hall.

"Holland by 2011 will be doing cell manufacturing," Johnson Controls Inc. spokesman Christian Rosenkranz said proudly, as he held up a small green and white cylinder. The 3.6-volt lithium ion battery will be produced in the former Meadowview warehouse of JCI, through a joint venture with the French company Saft.

Mercedes started using the technology this year, Rosenkranz said, tapping cells made in France.

"It will be introduced to the 7 Series BMW Active Hybrid next year," he said.

The JCI/Saft battery project joined a handful of Michigan-funded technologies in the Alternative Energy Showcase. It lined the hall next to mounds of wood chips and daffodils edging the indoor track. Back for its second year, the EcoXperience gives a slow-speed venue for trying hybrids and electric vehicles. It is sponsored by the Michigan Economic Development Corp.

On the main floor at Cobo Hall, a new Electric Avenue paved a path for automakers and suppliers already tapping electric power. From the sleak Nissan Leaf to the tiny tandem-seat Tango, all-electric vehicles joined the scene.

One of just two Chinese companies at the show, Li Shu Guang Ming Auto Design, is a Beijing battery maker.

"We make the cheapest batteries for electronic cars," a spokeswoman said. "And our batteries are very safe."

The other Chinese company, BYD, was the only automaker on display from the world's largest market. On Monday, Chinese officials said 14 million vehicles were made there in 2009. That's 3 million more than the U.S. market bought last year.
