Hungarian heat to help Button

Formula One championship leader Jenson Button returns to the scene of his first victory on Sunday hoping to get back up to speed in the Hungarian heat.
The Briton's surprise win at a wet Hungaroring with Honda in 2006 was his sole success until this season when the Brawn GP driver pulled off a stunning six triumphs in the first seven races.
Since then, Red Bull have been on a charge with two victories on the trot while Button has stumbled, leaving him 21 points clear of Germany's Sebastian Vettel with eight races remaining.
The leader struggled to get heat in his tyres in chilly conditions in the last two races, finishing sixth and fifth, but can expect to do better in Budapest even if long-range forecasts predict a chance of rain on Saturday.
"Hungary is always one of my favourite races and even more so this year as it should finally be a return to some real summer temperatures," he said.
"It's fantastic to be going back there with the chance to compete for the win again," added the 29-year-old, whose Brazilian team mate Rubens Barrichello also won in Hungary with Ferrari in 2002.
Brawn have what they say is a significant aerodynamic upgrade for what remains one of Formula One's slowest tracks.
Formula One will welcome a new face, with Spain's Jaime Alguersuari making his debut for Toro Rosso as the sport's youngest ever driver.
The Barcelona-born driver, who will be just 19 years and 125 days old on Sunday, replaces sacked Frenchman Sebastien Bourdais.
"I am aware that I am facing a very tough challenge," he said on Monday. "Coming into Formula One is never easy, coming into Formula One in the middle of a season is even harder and doing so without any testing is really difficult."
The teenager will not trouble Button, whose main rivals will be Vettel and Australian Mark Webber, who ended his long wait for a first win in Germany this month.
McLaren, without a podium finish this season so far, could also come into the mix after showing signs of significant improvement at the Nuerburgring.
World champion Lewis Hamilton has been on pole in Hungary, a circuit famously difficult to overtake on, for the past two years while the twisty track could also act as a leveller.
"We always go for the victory but we've not always got the equipment to do it," said McLaren team boss Martin Whitmarsh after the last race. "I think hopefully (in Hungary) we will have the equipment to really go for it."
Renault's double world champion Fernando Alonso, who took his first win in Hungary in 2003, has also been sounding more confident after leaving Germany with the fastest lap.
"We have definitely improved and the latest upgrades made us much more competitive," he said.

What the hell is going on, how can all the timing gear went down?

That incident with Massa was unbelievable, fortunately he didn't seem to suffer from serious injuries. Just how can that piece of metal debris be flying off the road for so long and so high?

Holly crap, even with today's ultra strong, almost bullet proof helmets, the injuries look pretty bad. It could have been a lot worse if the metal debris went through the visor. Looks like he would be out for the rest of the year, if he has a skull fracture.

here's the slow mo of the incident..

BUDAPEST, Hungary -- Hospital officials said Formula One driver Felipe Massa is in "life-threatening" condition after undergoing surgery for a fractured skull from a high-speed crash at Hungarian Grand Prix qualifying.
Officials at the AEK military hospital said Saturday that Massa will be kept sedated on a respirator in an intensive care unit.
Medical director Peter Bazso said at a news conference that "Massa's condition is serious, life-threatening but stable."
Bazso and chief surgeon Lajos Zsiros say they expect Massa to be awoken Sunday.

The 28-year-old Brazilian had surgery one hour after arriving at the hospital, the doctors said.
The crash occurred Saturday after a spring had fallen off another car and flew up and struck Massa in the helmet. An apparently dazed Massa continued driving over a curb and across the track. He went through the gravel area alongside the Formula One circuit before striking a tire-lined barrier.

The impact of the rear suspension part -- a standard component that Brawn GP team principal Ross Brawn believed was made of steel -- damaged the left side of Massa's helmet, ripping out the visor and leaving a long dent on its side. Blood was seen above Massa's left eye.

"Following a complete medical examination it emerged that he had suffered a cut on his forehead, a bone damage of his skull and a brain concussion," Ferrari said in a statement.
Rubens Barrichello, a fellow Brazilian, went to the medical center to check on Massa's condition and said the Ferrari driver appeared to be doing fine despite the cut above his left eye.
"I wanted to see him myself because I've been in situations like that," Barrichello said. "We are Brazilians and sometimes we have a family, sometimes we don't, and when we wake up all we want to see is someone we know. I wanted to be there in case there was not anybody from the family there.

"But he was conscious, he was moving and he was very agitated with the fact that he had a cut on his head. With that, they sedated him for him to calm down, and then they moved him to [the] hospital."
Massa appeared to regain consciousness just before the crash at Turn 4 as his front brakes seemed to lock before the violent impact.
He remained in the car for a considerable time and was assisted out before being taken to the medical center. He was then taken to the helicopter on a stretcher, wearing a neck brace.
The front of his Ferrari was shredded, with both tires having come off and the front nose open.

The crash comes less than a week after Henry Surtees, the son of former Formula One champion John Surtees, died in an F2 race on Sunday. Surtees was struck in the head by a tire from another car, causing him to lose consciousness and drive into a barrier.
"It is not a coincidence that something happened right now," Barrichello said. "Something needs to be done. Yes, absolutely."
No Formula One driver has died on the track since three-time champion Ayrton Senna's crash at Imola 15 years ago.

The accident was also reminiscent of Heikki Kovalainen's high-speed crash at last year's Spanish GP, when the McLaren driver slammed into a wall at high speed. Kovalainen spent the night in a hospital with a concussion.
"What happened to me in Barcelona was a very nasty accident. But I think it was a pretty freak accident and I don't know how to prevent that," Kovalainen said. "It was very unfortunate. But I think we should discuss it."
Surtees' death led drivers to discuss the issue of debris and head safety at length during their usual pre-race meeting on Friday.

Renault's Fernando Alonso took pole position for Sunday's race after qualifying was delayed for nearly 30 minutes because of Massa's accident.

Bloody hell that's nasty - almost exactly what happened to Senna. Brazil must be in shock. I pray that he'll be alright and hasn't suffered any brain damaged. Given how severe the accident was I don''t count on him ready to race on the grid tomorrow. Brain damage is no joke, for some it takes several months, if not years to recover -- while others never recover. But I'm hoping for the best. It would be a shame to lose him.

Massa undergoes successful surgery

By Jonathan Noble and Pablo ElizaldeSaturday,
July 25th 2009, 17:40 GMT

Felipe Massa has successfully undergone surgery for the injuries he suffered in his accident in qualifying in Hungary.
Ferrari said the driver will now remain under observation in the intensive care unit at the AEK hospital in Budapest, where the Brazilian was taken after being hit by a spring during Q2.
Massa had suffered a damaged skull and brain concussion, as well as a cut on his forehead.
The Italian team said a further update on his condition will be issued tomorrow morning.
Brawn confirmed the spring belonged to a damper from Rubens Barrichello's Brawn car, weighing around 800 grams.
"We had a problem at the back, so we are still investigating and we haven't had the piece back from the FIA yet so once we get it back we can understand what occurred and then draw some conclusions," said team boss Ross Brawn.
"It is the first time we've had a problem with the car. The car has been really reliable and we are obviously looking all through the data to understand what caused the problem. It is hard to comment at the moment until we have studied everything.
"We put a new component on Jenson's car in qualifying just to be safe, but we are still studying everything that went on to understand what happened."

BMW duo blame traffic for dismal day

Nick Heidfeld was extremely disappointed with his qualifying in Hungary, as the German was expecting to qualify in the top ten.
Heidfeld went out in Q1 and will start from 16th position, the German blaming traffic for not managing a clean lap.
"Today's result is a true disappointment," said Heidfeld. "I was hoping to make it into the top ten. Being second fastest in free practice this morning wasn't the benchmark for what was possible in qualifying, but at least it proved overall it went quite well.
"Then my first outing in qualifying confirmed the performance. I was sixth fastest at that period of the session. But then it all went wrong during my second outing. I didn't have a clear track on my out lap, which was why my first flying lap wasn't good.
"On my second flying lap I had Kazuki Nakajima in front of me, but couldn't back off because Rubens Barrichello was behind me. Then I went wide in turn eleven and that was it. It was not even enough to get into Q2."
Team-mate Robert Kubica was also hindered by traffic, completing a dismal day for BMW after winding up 19th.
"We were a little bit unlucky in qualifying," he said. "I had yellow flags on the first quick lap of my second attempt. On my second and final quick lap I had two cars in front of me. Although they moved off line they created dirty air.
"So I lost a lot of time as the car was sliding. This result is very disappointing. I will try my very best tomorrow but realistically this will be a very tough race."

I always thought the exposed head was a disaster waiting to happen and now two accidents within a week. There is only so much an helmet can do. Hopefully they FIA does something about it instead of wasting time on stupid politics.

Yes. But the only solution is closed cockpit, IMO. What other things can be done? The helmet is practically bullet-proof, but there is only so much a visor can do...

I only just hear and saw the accident now (since I don't watch F1 anymore)... horrible! I hope he gets better.

you don't watch F1 anymore mate? well, it won't be long before i join you in the sidelines...i think this whole cost cutting and polittics BS is just getting outta hand.

Not sure, but i heard in 2010, it's just gonna be 5 engines per driver for the entire season. Back in 1998-1999, Mika used over 200 engines per season...
