Regional 2008 Johannesburg International Motor Show

So I've had the good fortune to traipse around the Johannesburg International Motor Show (JIMS) this afternoon, exhibitor's pass in pocket one day prior to the show opening its doors officially. It's going to be a belter!

Unlike the slightly poor turnout at Sydney this year, the JIMS expo has all the major players present. Heck, get this - even we're getting a Koenigsegg too... ;)

The exhibitors have pulled out the stops and most of them occupy their regular stand positions. Some highlights of the show include (in no particular order - and only those that I can remember):

Audi's new stand design is stunning - easily the pick of the show - and the emphasis is white white white and just an itty bitty bit o' black. All of the cars on the stand are white (which means that I'm in heaven) barring a black Q7 and an RS6 sedan. The rest:

Q5 (!) looking resplendent on blingy large-diameter turbine-style rims
TTS Roadster
S3 Sportback - duck my fog - it's so hot
A3 Cabrio
A4 3.2 quattro
S5
R8

BMW's stand as usual is the epitome of its corporate persona. Very stylish.
Notable models:

F01 7er (two models; one a 750i, the other badge I didn't get to see...)
X6 Active Hybrid

Renault's hot little Twingo RS is there, so too is the new Laguna Coupe and the Koleos SUV.

VW brought the Scirocco along to show us Southern plebs - I wonder if it will be sold here. Very impressive in the metal. Lovely, rich metallic red on the show car. Interestingly it's shown in LHD format which is odd to me.

Mercedes Benz' stand is impressive as always with a dedicated section to AMG. I only saw something under wraps but I reckon we'll see the motor show debut of the SL 65 AMG Black Series.

I gawked for half-an-hour over Nissan's GT-R - the first I've seen. So much better in real life!

GM have surprised with both the new Camaro concept as well as the stunning Corvette Z06. Sadly it's just an evil tease - no RHD production being slated.

430 Scuderia will be there

Aston Martin DBS is resplendent in white

... more to follow.

Lucky you Martin! I was hoping to make it down but Im busy with exams :)

Is JIMS supposed to replace Auto Africa? Please do post pics when you get a chance.

Man your motor show completely trashes the mine. I am so jealous.

I experienced the same thing as you when I saw the GTR. I spent about half an hour just looking at it. Can't wait for the pics.

Hey Giannis and Tyc - you cheeky buggers! :D

Ja - like people wouldn't be suspicious of a man with a camera snapping away merrily before the official opening of the show!

Pics will come...

As for other tidbits I forgot to mention...

Alfa's MiTo makes its African debut.
BMW's refreshed 3er is released for public consumption

...and an update on the SL65 AMG BS:

JIMS update: Fourteen units of the SL 65 AMG Black Series are available in South Africa. Of the 14, the first four have already been sold for R3.9 million. The remaining 10 cost R4.2 million.
Eish! Yoh yoh yoh - that's one makulu Wa-Benzi!

some pix to get the wheels rolling: (from another thread)

Hi guys,
Went to a motorshow here today. It was for press and special invites only. Will be open to the public on Saturday onwards. Got to see the CCXR Edition in person, the car here will cost around $4 million dollars here local after taxes. Got to check the car out thoroughly and start it, sounds very mean!
Here are the photo's.

Also note, that silver SLR is the same one I spotted on a truck a few weeks back :usa7uh:

Yes, exactly. The Auto Africa moniker was non-descript and dull. So I guess the they changed it to something more relevant.

I'm impressed by the turnout from the manufacturers. It's a great show.

Good luck for the exams. Hope you come through with flying colours.

Hey Martin did you goto the Sydney show ?
Nope! :D A plane ticket to Sydney would've been a touch expensive for one motor show!

BTW, Did I mention that VW showed the Passat CC? It garnered a fair amount of attention but to me it was a total non-event. And, perplexingly, no Golf 6 in any form. That was a big disappointment because, in the past, VW have surprised by showing the latest Golf early to the SA motoring public.

I have tons of pics now! Just have to upload them [GROAN]...
