Yet again Toyota disappoint me. Their new F1 car looks like a collection of other team's car design. Mirrors and side pod shield from Renault. Front wing from Mclaren, and side pod shape from Williams. The car isn't as tightly packaged as the Mclarens and the Ferrari, especially around the side pod area, which is quite boxy in its design. It is good to see Toyota finally embracing the side pod under cut design, they have refused to adopt this for a long time, I guess they have realised their mistake.
The car looks solid, but not innovates, we will have to wait and see their race spec aero before making our final judgement.
.Lewis Hamilton drove the team’s MP4-23 for the first time today at the Jerez circuit. Hamilton left the garage at 09:10 and completed over 456kms and 103 laps during the course of the day.
Hamilton joined his new team-mate, Heikki Kovalainen at the Spanish circuit for the first of four days of testing over the coming week. Kovalainen also passed the 100 lap mark, as the Finn clocked up a total of 101.
Following yesterday’s session, which saw Kovalainen and test driver Pedro de la Rosa take both MP4-23 chassis for their initial runs, work at the test saw Hamilton and Kovalainen continue to focus on both drivers and team familiarising themselves with the 2008 challenger. Hamilton and Kovalainen recorded best laps of 1:19.132 and 1:19.462 respectively.
Yesterday was the first time in the history of the team that it had completed two chassis for the first day of testing.
Hamilton and Kovalainen will remain in Jerez for the final day of the week tomorrow, Friday. De la Rosa and fellow test driver Gary Paffett will take over testing duties on Monday with Hamilton and Kovalainen returning to the wheel for the final two days of the session on Tuesday and Wednesday.

"It was fantastic to get my hands on the MP4-23 this morning in Jerez.

I saw the completed car for the first time on Monday at the team's launch in Stuttgart and I have been pretty impatient since then! My first run was at 09:10 and my first impressions are encouraging. I covered over 103 laps, which is 456kms, today. Considering this is only the second day the car has been on track, I am pretty happy with that. We have a lot of work to do, but now we have a real understanding of where we are starting from. I will be back in the MP4-23 with Heikki tomorrow and I am looking forward to continuing the programme and moving forward."
Heikki Kovalainen
"Today was my second day with the MP4-23 and I have now been able to complete over 447kms in total. We are all still spending time learning about the car and starting to get used to it. That we were on track for 204 laps in total today is definitely helping us to learn and progress with the car. For me in particular the car is very different from last year, and I have been focusing on that side of things. Settling into the team has been very easy, and I am looking forward to continuing our preparations for Melbourne next Tuesday."
Seems Timo Goss's team got it right this time.Haug: ''The regulations don't allow many changes to the engine but the people at the factory already started the new program of the 2008 engine in April, in November it was first tested on the bench.''
Only small details can be changed but this is what it comes down to: ''Nowadays we're trying to gain thousands of a second, and when you count everything up, you get a tenth out of it.''
''We would feel very well when we knew that we're basically a tenth faster than the competition. That's what we're aiming for and the engine should obviously contribute to this.''
''(But) first of all it should be reliable. I think we have a good package. But it's true, little can be changed. Only a few details to the airbox and a few modications to the outside, that's it really. Nevertheless we've been working intensivey and could - in comparison with the old days - make a small, small step forward. But I think this is the same for everyone. Let's put it like this: while you used to find 10 bhp over the wintertime, you're already happy having found 1 bhp nowadays - but this very horsepower is important.''

.The BMW Sauber F1 Team will line up for the 2008 season with a new technology partner on board. T-Systems, the business customer subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom, will work together with the team under the extreme conditions of motor sport to develop innovative Information and Communication Technology (ICT) solutions.
The company logo will be visible on both the outside and inside of the BMW Sauber F1.08 cockpit area and on the car’s nose section, as well as on team clothing and the drivers’ helmets.
As BMW Motorsport Director Mario Theissen explains: “The latest IT and telecommunications technology represents an integral part of motor racing. The partnership of T-Systems and BMW brings together two leaders in innovation to create tailor-made solutions for our team. Our new partner possesses both IT and telecommunications know-how and experience and expertise in the automotive sector. This makes T-Systems an ideal partner for us in the development of future technologies which can also offer key benefits for series production.”
T-Systems has already set up a high-performance data link to connect the team’s locations in Munich and Hinwil. A parts logistics system based on Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology, meanwhile, is currently in the pilot phase. This development focuses on the identification and location of all the car and replacement parts used by the team in its activities around the world.
Further research and development projects are also in the pipeline. Under the spotlight here are data security issues, for example, as well as systems for recording service times which are designed to allow the service life of car parts to be optimised.
T-Systems sees the new sponsoring partnership as a platform for conducting research and development work under extreme conditions. “Instead of relying solely on laboratory trials, practical testing on the ground – under the toughest conditions – is also incorporated into the development process,” says Reinhard Clemens, Member of the Board of Management at Deutsche Telekom AG responsible for business customers and CEO T-Systems.
“This cooperation is a key milestone in the company’s drive to become the leading ICT service provider for the automotive sector,” he adds. BMW and T-Systems can already look back on several years of partnership away from the race track. T-Systems has helped develop solutions such as BMW TeleServices, which underpin the data transfer required to carry out maintenance work during a journey. BMW also uses T-Systems’ traffic information service TMCpro in its Connected Drive technology for production cars.
* A few weeks ago it was speculated that it would be the T-Mobile brand the one to sponsor BMW Sauber.

The Vodafone McLaren Mercedes team today concluded its first test with its 2008 car, the MP4-23. Following the launch event on Monday, 7th January 2008 at the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart, the MP4-23 has completed three positive test days at the Jerez track.
Lewis Hamilton, Heikki Kovalainen and Pedro de la Rosa were all present for the test, which ran two MP4-23 chassis without any major issues and saw the new car cover over 1,999 kilometres.
The Vodafone McLaren Mercedes engineering team will spend the weekend analysing and working with the intelligence gathered from the three day session as the pre-season development programme continues with force. The test team will then return to track action on Monday with Pedro alongside Gary Paffett, who will be taking the wheel of the MP4-23 for the first time.
