F1 2008 Australian Grand Prix

Fantastic race. My take:

Love the new no TC rules and all the sideways action. Some of the bigger stars who are used to TC will take a hit and the newer stars from other formulas with out TC will be on the rise.

BMW definitely seems had the pace, hopefully they can sustain it. But they will need better race craft before they can really challenge McLaren. The sad part is, if that dumb ass didn't take Kubica out, BMW would have been leading the manufacturer's championship (albeith I doubt for too long).

Ferrari looked like the pre-Schumacher era Ferrrai, bumbling along. But count Ferrari out at your own peril, I am sure they will come back strong, though I am hoping not.

Honda, or Barichelo was a pleasent surprise despite him making the mistake of leaving the pit under red light.

I agree. Kubica and Heidfeldt do have the skills necessary to battle at the top, it's not up to the engineers and mechanics to push the car to it's utter limit. I do feel sorry for Kubica, he seemed to be on a roll this weekend.

Ferrari also had reliability issues during the beginning of last years season so one should not count them out, they will sort themselves out. If not maybe they should tell Jean Todt to comeback.

That's one of the perils of no electronics cars. It's a double edged sword. Some pay their mistakes others make the opposition pay for their mistakes.
Whatever we had today was just a little taste compared to the "good old days".
Spinners and/or crashers/zelots like Andrea "DeCrasharis" DeCesaris or Ricardo
"Spin out" Patrese made today's guys look like pros.
And when Senna and Prost/Mansell crashed the really did have fist fights in the paddock.

Some examples:

So street circuits were always goofy races. And not only

Agreed.

Lol at the last video reminds me of this weekend. The Senna and Prost incident is very similar to what happened between Coulthard and Massa today.

Senna and Mansell you mean.
Both were considered bonehead overtakers who either pulled spectacular overtakes or caused accidents/incidents.

nonsense! IMO, yes, both Ferraris did some c*ck ups today. but did u stop and think that Ferrari messed up Kimi's strategy? plus, that track is one helluva of a difficult track to overtake.

i assume u don't know that Kimi started in 15th, and by end of the 1st lap, he was 8th? thats long for you?

also, its an F1 driver's job to seize every small space given on the track. Kimi went for it, paid the price for it. shiit happens. move on. what dod u expect Kova to do? park his car by the side and wave Kimster by?

When did Ferrari mess up his strategy during the race? He couldn't come in the pits when the SC was deployed. He was on a one-stopper and it was working until he largely compromised himself.

I know he was 15th and was 8th after the first lap. The first lap! What happened after that was a demo of the tactics that a WDC should not use. It took him nearly 20 laps to pass a much slower Barrichello. He gains an advantage from the SCs, then flings it off the road making an impossible attempt on Heikki. Then he puts a wheel on grass trying to pass Timo Glock in a Toyota.

No one said Heikki needed to make it easy, so cut the sarcasm.

What I'm trying to say, and I'm probably the minority, is that Hamilton wasn't THAT fantastic.

I agree with that. Hamilton's performance here was like his win at Fuji. Impressive, but not as fantastic as it looked. He was able to control the race from the front and many of his competitors faded away all by themselves. It was a good win, but not some virtuoso performance.

Onto Kovalainen, the reason he slowed down wasn't because he hit the limiter when going for a tear off, he hit it whilst fist pumping in celebration of making the pass.

Yesterday on spanish TV Pedro de la Rosa said:

"Mclaren have the best engine and it will have for the next five years because it is impossible to do changes in the engine for all the teams" :eusa_thin
Hope he's wrong, cause it is quite depressive if true, as Ferrari engines lack reliability, Renault power, BMW the low rpm launches, Honda the torque curve. :eusa_doh:

That is absolutely hilarious!! The cockyness of some of these new drivers, serves you right.

Friend took some photos while he was at the GP.

Another rule change. Even when I was following F1 intensely, I was having trouble keeping up. The no pitting rule for SC periods will cause someone to run out of gas on the track (or take a time penalty), just because some other driver had an accident and caused the SC to come out. Who thinks up these mindless rules?

I think Ferrari will be allowed to find a way to fix their engines, even if they have to turn it in after the next for homologation for the next five years. Bernie loses if Ferrari engines explode every race and the team becomes also-rans. Mclaren were supposed to get the last garage, but they got the fifth one. Again, Bernie loses if they are not competitive.

If Mclaren do have the best engine for the next five-years and Ferrari are not allowed to do anything, Lewis may make some history.

.

clearly u don't know the circuit well. Albert park is a street circuit, and it's really difficult to overtake. so what if it took him so long to overtake? at least, he did a clean one.

also, he had one tyre in the pitlane, just as the SC was about to be deployed.

i agree that both Kimi and Massa should have had a vodka or somethin before the race, the iceman wasn't that icy, but the way u criticize Kimi is as if he's brainless calling him stupid and all. it's a WDC ur talking about, have some respect.

First you assume I didn't know Kimi started 15th, now you insist I clearly don't know the track. I can say similar things, but we can have disagree without having to say you don't know this and I don't know that.

It is not impossible to overtake at Albert Park, though it is a street circuit. This is not Monaco we're talking about and Kimi is supposed to be this "real racer" supremo.

As a Ferrari fan, I see a problem with a car, driven by a reigning WDC, taking so long to pass a Honda, driven by an ex-Ferrari driver that most people think should be retired. I wrote the same on a Ferrari forum and many others made the same point. Also, Barrichello may well have let Kimi make that "clean overtake" because (as Martin Brundle suggested) it was costing them both time.

Kimi did not have one tyre in the pitlane. He had one tyre going into the pit entryway (a huge difference) when the safety car was called. Had he continued going into the pitlane and beyond the white line for the speed limit, he would have had a stop-go penalty. Ferrari was right to tell him to go turn back onto the track.

A lot worse things have been said about Alonso, a double-WDC. Mansell's racing intelligence has been insulted by numerous F1 journalists since as long as I can remember! Next time someone on this forum goes off on Alonso, I hope you hold them to the same standard.

so u think Kimi was sleeping behind the wheel? he was obviously in a much heavier car, and soft tyres=more attention needed about the tyres.

as for Alonso, altho i have never been a fan of his, i've always ranked him behind MS, in recent years. when MS retired, i rated him the best, most complete driver in the field, even better than Kimi. but Kimi proved that he's up there with the best with his 2nd half performance.

but what i can't stand about Alonso is his behaviour of blaming everybody except himself when something goes wrong.

but u callin Kimi stupid? thats gotta be the stupidiest comment i've read.

I'm just glad that BMW Sauber worked well and kudos to Nick for a nice drive. Pity for Kubica and Kova... Hamilton, Nico, :eusa_clap

Ferrari? :t-drive::D It's a 1st race anyways and Malaysia starts in just 4 days...:eusa_danc We'll see...

Tyco, so BMW were sandbagging pre season?

Tyco, so BMW were sandbagging pre season?

Noone confirmed it and i don't believe it.

As i've said, it's a 1st race. Let's see if they can continue like this next 3-4 races. If so, then something definitely happened, since all test reports and interviews with Robert and Nick weren't promising.

Btw, Remy, are you going to see Malaysian GP?

:t-cheers:
