2007 CL Class Thread 2 continued.

GT's are to act like sports cars with a manual like shifting system. Proportionally in the center. Kinda like what AMG-U said. Its for the feel. Sports car...

It's an auto it will always be an auto. You put it in D and never touch it again until you park it.

Excatly! Why's everyone surprised it has an electronic gear shifter? ALL new Mercedes will eventually get them. The ML, R, S and GL all have it - why not the CL and the upcoming C? The R-Class concept had it and that was years ago before the ML fist came out with it.

Also, those interior shots are old. I think they're in the old thread, the car was parked in a garage somewhere.

Well, I disagree about the C getting the column shifter. I think that is unlikely because of the European market and even the American market where I do see quite a few with manuals. Now a big sedan or large luxury coupe that will always be an automatic sure why not, it clears up more space...it makes more sense.

Paddle shifters or buttons would be OK, but a column shifter detaches you from driving involvement IMO. I am constantly revving down, changing gears on a semi automatic, from D to 4, etc, all the time. I drive with one hand on the shifter almost all the time. If you driven manual you'd understand...

Me too... i always have one hand on the shifter as well. Down shifting and so on. Its more of a real drive.... imo of course ;) .

I do, and it's a pain sometimes trying to make a hard turn and down / upshift at the same time.
Unless F1 has seriously got it all wrong all these years the ultimate in driver involvement for semi automatics are paddle shifters. You have both hands on the steering wheel and the gear levers (or buttons) at your finger tips.

I keep forgetting that the C has a manual option. I wonder how they'd do it, but I'm sure we'll have a column shifter for the automatics.

I'm with the paddle shifters or the buttons behind the wheel, but not a big fan of MB's manual shifting in the center gear shifter. I find myself shifting down everytime I lay my hand on the ML's gear shifter. It annoys me ;)

I've driven many manuals and I think an automatic shouldn't have a gear shifter in the center. You could use that place for something else :usa7uh:

Well on my CL Yaz... Its not shifting down that activates manual, its left and right. ;)

I know Alex, it's the same layout :D
I meant that it shifts down from D to 4, to 3.... when I'm holding on the gear shifter. I do it without notcing it. I like BMW's manual mode layout better. It requires you to move the gear shifter to the left and then push it upward or downward :)

That's what I really really liked from the M5 I drove... :D

...and like Alx said, it's not up and down but left and right, I love the feeling of shifting, revving down for breaking and revv down/up for boosting speed (with AC off sometimes ;) ) whenever going fast and in need of that 'extra-boost'... sort of my own personal 'after-burner'-like thing. I LOVE my Mercedes engines and the semi-auto-transmission has given me a driving satisfaction no other automatic has ever given me before...
The column shifter (with no paddle shifters nor buttons in that case) alone is a complete turn off for me. As if all of a sudden they take away the kid in me, and I feel old and bored IMO of course.

I took this off of GermanCarFans NSL.

"The new S-Class V6 and V8 saloons are specified as standard with the 7G-TRONIC seven-speed automatic transmission, the only passenger car transmission of this type in the world. 7G-TRONIC incorporates numerous engineering innovations which, in conjunction with the state-of-the-art engines, provide enhanced accel-eration and mid-range power, reduced fuel consumption and greater shifting com-fort. 7G-TRONIC is combined with the DIRECT SELECT gearshift, which replaces the conventional centre console-mounted automatic selector lever. A brief press of the DIRECT SELECT steering-column selector lever allows the driver to select the "P", "N", "R" and "D" positions. The commands are transmitted electronically, although the actual gear changes are actuated by cable.

The S/C/M/ mode selector switch on the centre console allows the driver to choose between three different modes: Sport, Comfort and Manual. As well as the transmission characteristics, these modes also allow the characteristics of the ac-celerator pedal and the suspension (springing and damping) settings to be varied. In Manual mode, the driver changes gear using the steering-wheel gearshift buttons."

If the S-class has shifters via the steering wheel then the coupe will too.

That's nice! Makes a big difference! I hope that's a standard feature otherwise a must-have for any car enthusiast. :eusa_clap
