Button will sign contract with McLaren in the next few days

Formula One world champion Jenson Button has agreed terms on a three-year deal with McLaren and could sign a contract within days, Britain's Guardian newspaper reported on Tuesday.

There was no immediate comment from the Woking-based team or the driver's management.

The newspaper's long-standing Formula One reporter Alan Henry, who has close connections with McLaren, said the deal would be worth £6-million a year to 29-year-old Button.

If the deal goes through, Button would almost double his current salary and partner compatriot Lewis Hamilton in all-British line-up of champions at the Mercedes-powered team.

He won the championship with Brawn this year, with that team becoming Mercedes Grand Prix next season after a takeover was announced on Monday.

Button was given a guided tour of the McLaren factory last Friday.

Brawn chief executive Nick Fry said on Monday that he hoped a deal could still be done with the driver but made clear that the Mercedes' takeover did not mean the team would now throw more money at him.

"We've had discussions with Jenson which we think are a sensible salary and this is not going to change anything in that respect," he told BBC radio.

"I hope Jenson will be with us next season, we've worked together for a good few years now and succeeded in winning a world championship together," he added.

I think it's a mistake if Button goes to Mclaren. On the other hand, i'm really hoping Heidi will land a good ride. So most likely, he'd replace Button.

For the sake of F1, someone gives Kimi a decent ride, Heidi is a solid driver but Kimi still has it.

No disrespect to Button but he's not really a decent driver. Agree with you on the Kimi issue, however I heard he's quitting F1 but not ruling out a return in 2011.

For the sake of F1?? F1 doesn't need Kimi. There are plenty of drivers out thre who are as good if not better than him; Alonso, Hamilton, Kubica, Vettel and Rosberg.

Kimi has priced himself out of the market and alienated several potential employers for 2010. Ferrari are giving him a solid €10 million for tearing up his contract for next year. Hamilton's salary is £12 million and I wouldn't be surprised if Kimi's manager have demanded £10 million. In addition, Kimi wants a limited number of sponsorship days and a clause that permit him to race in rally. He's simply poor value in relation to how many good drivers are out there that are available as a third of the money demanded by Kimi and his management.

2010 season will do fine without him.

According to BBC, Button has signed with Mclaren. Rubben's is probably rolling around in his private jet laughing. During the season it seemed as Button was the darling of the team and that his bond with Ross was stronger than handcuffs. After all the dreaded years as a Honda team, one would have thought that winning this years championships would bring about a brighter future for all parties.

But this is F1, a dark sport where money prevail over everything. A skimpy salary preposition unfitting for a champion has been offered to Button with the aim of pushing him out of the team, making way for Mercedes to pilot Rosberg as Germany's "Lewis Hamilton".

The news has just come in that Jenson Button has completed his move from Brawn GP (now known as Mercedes Grand Prix) to McLaren. He completes an all British team, lining up alongside 2008 world champion Lewis Hamilton.
Button will double his £4 million Brawn salary next year, with the iconic British team reportedly offering £8 million a year to drive for them from 2010. It creates a rare situation with McLaren now fielding two world champions in their line-up - the first time F1 has seen this since the same team boasted the legendary line-up of Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna back in 1989.
This of course creates one of Button's greatest career challenges to date. Lewis Hamilton is part of the furniture at McLaren having been groomed by the team since the age of 10, and coming into this team is far from easy. We all remember what happened the last time a world champion drove alongside the young Brit.

It would be nice to have all the world champions to battle it out, I can't remember the last time when the grid has 4 world champions together.

Kubica still have a bit to prove, he went off the boil this year and lost complete interest when his car wasn't performing well.

I agree that Kimi has overestimated his value in this current situation, I really don't understand, is money really that important for him? He seems like the guy who doesn't really care as long as he is having fun, and he has enough money already to do whatever he wants for the rest of his life.

^^
Sure he has a bit to prove but last year he presented himself as a solid driver capable of consistently scoring points. It's a shame he was driving a wreckage this year. But having signed only a one year deal with Renault, he's clearly jocking for that special 2011 driver seat that will be vacant if Ferrari don't extend Massa's contract which ends with 2010 season. Then there is Vettel who is eyeing the same seat if Red Bull fails to develop a championship winning car.

As for Kimi, I seriously believe that it's his management who are his money eating pit bulls. Alonso is worth is weight in gold because him, unlike many top drivers except for Hamilton, is capable of attracting sponsors. Kimi has plenty of money, especially when he practically has zero expenses as an F1 driver. The team pays for travel, food, partying and anything else he might need during racing season. It's just pure greed on the side of the managers who wants to squeeze the last bit of milk out of Kimi before he retire as an F1 driver.

I have nothing against Button, but with the same ca tahn Hamilton, he will beat the dust this season.
