Benz confirms inline six

Diesel inline six first, potential S-Class facelift debut, and AMG wants in too...

It’s been an open secret that Mercedes-Benz has been
looking to return to inline six-cylinder engines to, at least in part, replace its V6 engine range. But now we can confirm the news.

The CEO of Mercedes-AMG, Tobias Moers, confirmed that the German car-maker is indeed well into development of the new inline six-cylinder engine family, which will see the brand return to its roots and also deliver efficiency and packaging gains.

When the AMG boss was quizzed over whether he had started fiddling with the new inline six-cylinder engine, he said, “Not yet, but we’re gonna start.”

The official confirmation backs up months of rumour from the brand, and confirms that the new engine family will use 500cc cylinder sizes to produce 3.0-litre six-cylinder and 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine families, akin to BMW’s engine strategy (and others including Jaguar Land Rover).

The first cab off the rank is an all-new, all-alloy turbo-diesel 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine (143kW/400Nm) that replaces the ageing 2.1-litre unit.

The new powertrain strategy will include petrol engines too, and is likely to underpin AMG’s manic2.0-litre turbo-petrol circa-300kW unit for the next AMG A 45.

Moers said “No” when asked if it was too early to start working with the new 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder engine.

And then japed: “But it is too early to talk with you guys about it!”

The new inline six-cylinder engine is also likely to form the basis of beefy V12 engine down the track, an engine that’s expected to benefit from a hybrid powertrain to increase efficiency further.

Mercedes-Benz head of research and development, Thomas Weber, was also forthcoming on the topic of an inline six-cylinder engine during a round-table interview at the global launch of the new E-Class in Portugal, and concurred the V6 would be replaced.

“We have the best V6 in the world but the time will come when this perfect V6 will see a successor,” Weber commented.

Weber confirmed we would see a diesel-powered inline six-cylinder engine from Benz first. Mercedes will then decide how to proceed with the rest of the engine range rollout… Even 1.5-litre three-cylinder engines for the next-generation of A-Class, CLA-Class and GLA-Class vehicles.

“Could be that these changes will start with the diesel. We started with the diesel [four-cylinder] now, and we will see in which sequence we will are also going to update our engine line-up,” Weber stated.

The new inline six-cylinder engine is likely to make its way into all manner of Benz’s, including most of its SUVs, plus the C-Class and E-Class.

It’s not clear which vehicle will debut the new inline-six diesel but a facelifted S-Class is shaping up as the likely recipient in around 18 months.

So I would say the 2018 model year C and E-Classes in the U.S. will get the new engine. S and C facelifts seem like a natural fit.

I tend to agree except the noise, flexibility, and refinement around the top-end of the current V6 engines could have been better.
