M3/M4 Worldwide: BMW M3 sale numbers

The BMW M3 is a high-performance version of the BMW 3 Series, developed by BMW's in-house motorsport division, BMW M GmbH. M3 models have been produced for every generation of 3 Series since the E30 M3 was introduced in 1986. The BMW M4 is a high-performance version of the BMW 4 Series automobile developed by BMW's motorsport division, BMW M, that has been built since 2014. As part of the renumbering that splits the coupé and convertible variants of the 3 Series into the 4 Series, the M4 replaced those variants of the BMW M3. Official website: BMW M

this time 4-door M3 is back so sales should still be good.

ohh yeah..and a wagon to.. there will be 5 M3´s instead of 3:D

I'm not surprised they have sold that many, it seems to me I see more E46 M3s than standard 3 series coupes.

It's great the BMW have been able to sell so many, I wonder if it will be the case with the new M3, seeing as it's much more expensive!

It is the M3 Convertible that I want!

Note that the half of the M3 sold, were sold in the US.

What really bothers me is the fact that the americans see the M3 as the top-of-the-line 3er and not as a true sports car...

But then again they never got the CSL, did they? Things might change this time around?

I know it is fashionable in certain parts of the world to look down on Americans as frivolous and uninformed, but tell me Giannis how you know "americans" do not see the M3 as a sports car?

I am an American and I see the M3 as a sports car. I have also tracked my M3, and from attending track and autocross events I can tell you that many many M3 owners in the United States are very passionate about their cars and about performance in general.

I confess I do not know how Greeks in general view the M3, so I will not make frivolous or uninformed statements about their attitudes. Nor will I arrogantly try to generalize the entire Greek market based on my own limited perceptions.

That said, I would not be surprised if a higher percentage of American M3 buyers track or at least autocross their cars than do Greek buyers.

last I heard no wagon coming but you never know with BMw thesedays.

I think scott already reveiled a preliminary schedule when all the different M3 versions are due to be presented. It included the M3 Touring. Also a quote from the BMW M-Division article from CAR Magazine's June edition:

Today we're the first journalists to enter the M workshop since any of the proud, long-serving staff here can remember. And their lack of media-awareness leaves them charmingly off-guard. We have to wait for someone with a suitable electronic pass to let us through the heavy blue fire door, but the intriguing site of a full-trim four-door M3 awaits inside. Packing matt black wheels, silver/blue paint and a tan interior, it looks even more muscular than the four-door, and visually better balanced too. 'It is still at the evaluation stage, as is the Touring' blushes workshop boss Jakob Bolschak, hastily throwing a cover over the latest project.

It's not a Greek vs American views on the M3. It is a fact and it is not general: It doesn't mean that every american doesn't know the true character of the M3. Also, this is not me that said that at first, but a BMW official, i believe G. Richter. I'm trying to find the article that i took this quote from..

Part of the American perception has to do with the definition of what a "sports car" is. The M3 is based on the 3-Series and that makes it the top of the line 3-Series to most folks, which IMO it is. That said when most Americans think of a sports car they think of something with 2-seats, i.e. a M Roadster, Corvette, Boxster etc, not an upright coupe with sports car capabilities like the M3. It really isn't a "sports car" by the traditional definition.

BMW M

BMW M GmbH, formerly known as BMW Motorsport GmbH, is a subsidiary of BMW AG that manufactures high-performance luxury cars. BMW M ("M" for "motorsport") was initially created to facilitate BMW's racing program, which was very successful in the 1960s and 1970s. As time passed, BMW M began to supplement BMW's vehicle portfolio with specially modified higher trim models, for which they are now most known by the general public. These M-badged cars traditionally include modified engines, transmissions, suspensions, interior trims, aerodynamics, and exterior modifications to set them apart from their counterparts. All M models are tested and tuned at BMW's private facility at the Nürburgring racing circuit in Germany.
