CLK-Class (C209) World's most expensive lemon? (CLK-GTR)

The Mercedes-Benz C209 is the second generation CLK-Class, launched in 2002. The car was available in both hardtop coupé (C209) and in soft-top convertible (A209). Although its design and styling was derived from the E-Class, the mechanical underpinnings were based on the smaller C-Class. It was succeeded by the E-Class C207. Production: 2001–2009.

Dealership says $1.7 million car won't run and maker Mercedes-Benz won't fix it

I'd be damned if I bought a car for that much and it wouldn't work, or the fact that I couldn't drive it in public!

BTW, this must have been bought second hand, I think I'd take a CLK DTM over this car now though!

Says in the article that the car was purchased directly from MB Germany.

Damn, would I be furious if I shelled out that kind of money and got no service in return. I wonder what gives? There's got to be something we're missing for the story that would explain why Benz is being so stubborn about servicing that car.

Mental note - Don't buy any hyperexotics from MB.

"Additionally, according to Johnston, the car's transmission failed to shift properly, the hydraulic jack system failed and the car's window's came unglued. "

That cracked me up.

lolhyper cars face problems but companies should willingly help out customers...but i guess Mercedes don't respect customers

Well you know - when you shell out well over a million dollars for a car you kinda assume the company's gonna take care of you in one form or another. The implied guarentee is usually like - "We're robbing you. But in return, we'll send a crack team of thickly accented scientists to come wipe your butt when something goes wrong."

There's more going on than just repairs needed. The buyer says the car was devalued because 6 were made rather than 5. My speculation is MB balked at fixing it because of threatened legal action over production numbers, and MB probably wanted the buyer to pay freight to get the car to Germany to be worked on. If you buy a car like that there are alot of expenses that go with it. I have to pay $420 to ship my Lamborghini to the nearest dealer, but that's part of the game. A CLK GTR needs to go to Germany for repairs.
Also MB may have had a resale clause in their contract that the current owner was violating. These are just my guesses, you shouldn't judge until both sides of the story are known.

Good point. There's probably a slew of fine details here that we're not privy to.

MB sucks....joking:D ...they shouldn't have let it leak to the media...it's bad business for a company selling cars like SLR and 62/57 with those unbelieveable price tags...

I wouldn't be surprised if it was the guy telling the media on purpose, to back MB into a corner - seeing as the story's pretty one-sided, as drronh said. I expect it'll work, too, unfortunately.

Bash all you want, but I'm not of the opinion that MB is wilfully antagonistic to its customers.

My friend had a problem with his SL55, there was a front end vibration the dealer could not fix. Even though SL65 production was sold out, they built him one and gave him what he paid for the SL55. Of course he had to pay the price difference, but to make him happy they got him a car he couldn't have gotten otherwise.

It wasn't the dealer. He went to MB in Germany with his complaint after the dealer and the zone rep could not fix his car.
