I have just come back from fulfilling one of my life-long dreams; to experience a ride in a BMW M3. And what an experience! I still have tingles down my spine, I'm still sweating and I'm just gushing with superlatives with this fabulous car.
My friend's dad recently acquired himself a 2006 M3 Convertible SMG, black on black with the optional 19" inch rims. It's a beautiful example, and looks menacing at night, with the xenon's on. Ever since he got it, I've been hassling my friend, let's call him Bob, for a ride, with no avail - Bob's father was always overseas, dealing with business and other things.
Until today. I was at his house earlier, doing a Business assignment, when his dad rocked up in the M3. After we had finished and I was ready to go home, he offered me a ride. A big grin formed on my face, and sensing the opportunity, I said with gusto "Yes, please!". We went to the garage, and there it was. The M3. A multiple award-winning high-performance sports car, ready to go. Ready for me.
I squeeze into the rear seats. Boy they're small. My knees were hitting the seats in front of me. Not the best first impression I guess. Bob's dad gets in and wakes the M3 from it's sleep. Wow. It is beautiful. The sound from the exhaust even at idle is delicious, hard-edged and just, beautiful. He drives off, cruising along at 30km/h, waiting for the engine to warm up, reading off the speedo with it's trick set of orange and red lights, showing the state of the engine.
I'm savouring every opportunity, from the harsh grab of the SMG gearbox to the tinny exhaust note at cruising speed, to the harsh ride on uneven surfaces. But all that doesn't matter. I'm in an M3! It doesn't matter about all that - it becomes obselete as soon as opens the taps on the 5-time award-winning S54 inline-6. Ho-ly mother of God. As soon as the needle hits 3000rpm, the car becomes everything I dreamed it to be. It becomes hard-edged, it sounds twice as loud, the gears hit home harder, more brutal and your head jerks everytime it changes gear. It is a masterpiece. Nothing else compares. It is...man, there are so many superlatives to decribe this car.
The truly brilliant thing about the car is the engine note. It's so tight and so metallic and a glorious wail once it passes 3000rpm. It's totally different in character to the V8 I rode in - that's more loud, more raw and it seems all hell breaks loose. The inline-6 is more controlled and more metallic. They're both brilliant, but the inline-6 is totally different in character. I love it.
Such an experience. Such...brilliance. I'll never forget it. Incredible. It is everything people say. It is everything - and more. What an engine. What a car.
