I remember that back in the 1920's (when BMW didn't even exist) Auto Union and Mercedes were the two main rivals in races and in the road models so i 'm going to vote Mercedes and Audi.

:t-wild: :eusa_naug...:D

I have only one question for you, my friend: For how long did that "battle" last and how long does the current BMW vs. MB battle last? :D After that, ask yourself again: Is it BMW or Audi vs. MB? ;)

:t-cheers:

BMW has been around since 1916 i believe, yannis.

Of course the rivalry has always been between Mercedes and BMW but it seems to me like the modern rivalry among fans is between Audi fans and BMW fans because both companies are about driving yet they have two different philosophies concerning that conclusion. ONe wants to say that awd along with superb interiors is the best way to make cars while the other wants to say RWD along with perfect weight distribution make the best driving experience . So its a more fundamental difference in method verses a fundamental difference in product type. BMW and Mercedes are becoming less competitive it seems like...

I`m going to give Audi some credit for coming up in recient heated discussions. Audi has for the past 3-years become a major luxury car fighter
among the German makes (and has, in recent times built up some serious fans). I agree with those who say the Audi design philosphy is quit different. The different design philosphies by each German make should be the under-ground for a heated discussion, but remember, just because the design philosphies are different doesn`t mean thay can`t compete with each other.

That aside I voted for MB vs. BMW.. these two automakers will always be at each other`s throats and the faners are just way to easy to come by!!
We (MB vs BMW faners) will always be there to defend and protect what we believe is the Automotive fore-front of the luxury-performance car catagory.

Just look at the poll results, that already says a lot!:t-roses:

Completely agree. I recently started posting a little at Autospies with a fake username and the moment you say something bad about Lexus, you get slammed by the Lexus fans.

For example, I stated that the "lack of diesels is a blow to Lexus in Europe...". Immediately, I am given a rating of -4 by a bunch of Lexus fanboys who retaliate with "...f*** diesels, Lexus has hybrids. Hybrids are the future. Not slow and stinky outdated diesels..." :t-crazy2:

God I hate Lexus fanboys.
Troll. :D

I chose Audi vs BMW, but I think it has traditionally been MB vs BMW.
Just like someone pointed out earlier, the underlying philosophy of the two(MB & BMW) are polar opposite.
BMW is focused on Sports-Luxury. Their strength lies in the sportiness of their vehicles, and if faced with a choice of forgoing one for the other, they will choose Sports over Luxury. With this in mind, the Chasis, engine, suspension, materials are are driven by the underlying philosophy.
On the other hand, MB is more luxury oriented, and this drives the construction of the Chasis, suspension, engine, the materials etc.

Over the years, Audi has positioned itself in the middle- to the base that wants a bit of both world. I guess that is why we are seeing more of the intense rivalry between Audi and BMW.
One thing that is certain though, the rivalry between Audi and BMW is more than Audi and MB.
From the brands' perspective, the rivals listed in order of intensity is:
BMW:
1. MB
2. Audi

Audi:
1. BMW
2. MB

MB:
1. BMW
2. Audi

Just my 2 cents.

It's amazing how Audi has gained such a large following in the rest of the world, but has a slightly more than lack luster image here in the states (changing slowly w/ new product, but will take a good while, IMO). In my eyes, BMW, Mercedes Benz, Porsche, and Toyota are the kings of the auto industry, and their sucess, as well as their greatness, could never be put into numbers. Regardless of who outsells who.

Well I'm also in the states and I find that Audi has as much of a following in the sport and midsize luxury class as BMW & Lexus. I see a equal number of A4 and A6 cars as I do 3 and 5-Series, however nothing even comes close to
the number of C & E-Class Mercedes I see on the daily bases!:)

I've been seeing an increase in the number of A6's I see on daily basis, A4's qre quite popular and are becoming even more so. The Q7 seems to be picking up quite a bit as well.

I think Audi as a brand has HUGE potential here, though I question their legitimacy; In so many ways to me it looks like Audi is lacking true character, an identity. That's great they have Quattro as a brand staple for their cars, as well as a few design characteristics such as the single frame grill that really makes their cars stand out of a crowd, but there are holes in the background. For one I have trouble identifying what makes Audi truly different in terms of technological prowess and performance from BMW. I've done quite a bit of research on the Audi brand and the more I read the more Quattro comes off as a gimmick to sell cars, because every other piece of tech is sourced straight from parent company VW. Reminds a lot of Ford and GM and their luxury nameplates (thought not nearly as prestigious or worthy); they exists merely to generate more revenue for the sake of selling even more cars to people that would never otherwise consider the lesser make. I'm not saying I despise or detest Audi, I love Audi, nor am I trying to offend any of my die hard Audi buddies here, I'm just having some sleepless nights figuring out "who" Audi is.

To further the discussion on the validity of Audi's cars as true players here is a qoute I pulled out of the last issue of EVO (099). This was "letter of the month":
OverR8ed

I understand that the law of diminishing returns applies to the cost-to-performance ratio of performance cars. However, I think that the new R8 (evo 098) offers very poor value at 76,000 (pounds), particularly when you compare it with the company's own RS4.
Both cars share the same engine, both have four-wheel drive and both have quality interiors (even if the R8's does look extremely similar to the new TT's). As far as performance goes, there is again not much in it - 4.6sec to 62mph for the R8 against 4.8 for the RS4 - and the R8 has just a 14bhp per ton advantage.
An extra 26,000 pounds over the cost of the RS4 (almost the price of a new TT 3.2 quattro!) seems a lot of money to pay for a sexier body-shape and no speed limiter. Throw in the fact that a Porsche Carrera S costs only 65,000 (pounds) and will probably be a better car, and that really puts Audi's pricing policy into perspective!

Straight line speed won't be as big as factor for the R8, it is a midengine sports car It will most likely be much better on the track than a RS4, I am quitely confident that Audi has made this a special car, and once we see how it performs on the track we will see, There has not been a midengine Audi in the modern times so To write this car off is ridiculous especially since it has yet to be tested. I get real sick of people who are only interested in the 0-60 time its kind of ridiculous.

I hear you. However I dont' believe the writer was ranting about straight line numbers, he was questioning the reasoninig for the exsistence of the R8. I think the R8 is more purposeful in estblashing the Audi name in the 21st century as a global premium car major player, an image builder I guess then. This also marks a point in a century of Audi, where the Audi brand is firmly established unlike in the previous century where Audi was a part in an automotive conglomerate. I personally am glad the R8 is here, and would buy one in a heartbeat if I had the denero, hence the reason I have a 1:43rd scale model on order... boy do I feel spesh!

I agree, I think I'm starting to see through all the bullsh!t
people are talking on the R8, what's really going on is their starting to feel Audi breathing down BMW & Mercedes neck! Audi has proven to be more than just on the level with Mercedes and BMW, their's know following growing faster!
Now Audi has the aldasity to step into the (Super Coupe)
segment 1st! The dumbest think Mercedes could of done was follow Audi's lead into this new arena, reason being
you give the R8 crediblity. ;)

P.S. IMHO

Of course it's the classic BMW vs MB. Lately it has also been Audi vs everyone.
