As with most people in the blog, I feel that the Holden won is a complete load of S***.
If you read the entire review available in the magazine, the only car that was almost absolutely flawless was the S-class. The only issue was the slightly slow steering during sudden lane changes...but hey this is a 2-tonne luxury cruiser. Apart from that the car was considered pretty much perfect. But for some reason it didn't advance beyond the first stage because it was considered only an improvement over the w220 and not a quantum leap. To fly in the face of that logic however, the 3-series coupe, Toyota Aurion and Holden Commodore made it to the final round and finished in that order.
The 3-series 1 year ago barely managed to make it to the second round, but this year the coupe walked comfortably to the finals. This is despite having the exact same flaws as the sedan, i.e. according to them what is a very poor interior and extremely harsh ride quality over rough surfaces. Again I stress Australian roads, particularly out of the cities, can be very very poor and this has been a major issue with newer BMW's on run flats.
Now it's not that I have a problem with the 3-er coupe (I love the car), but with the logic of this magazine that bagged the sedan but a year later finds the coupe in the finals.
Then the Toyota. They complained about its poor dynamics and ancient suspension technology to name only a few of its issues, but it still placed second.
Then the Holden, where should I start:
* 4 recalls in the past few months since launch
* Lower end Models still using an ancient 4 speed auto (and the alternative transmissions are pretty sub par anyway)
* Widely publicized poor build quality
* Engines dating back to over 20 years ago
* CRAP design (despite the magazines claims that its stunning - my a** it is lol)
The only reason why the Holden and Toyota placed so highly were that they are built locally and the local manufacturers have taken a huge battering over the last few years as more and more aussies buy smaller vehicles. The future of local car manufacturing has come into question.
If you read the whole test, the award is a complete joke, and objectively there was only one winner - the S-class. So its a moderate advancement over the w220 (2000 Car of the year)...who cares. This didn't stop the 3-er coupe, or holden from making the top 3. The magazine themselves admit the car overall is pure excellence. So its Mercedes fault that the w220 was so good and Holden benefits because the previous commodore was found out to be a piece of junk, but this one is better.
URGH as you can tell I'm fuming over the complete BIAS of this award. The winner was completely illogical and utter BS.
