What to buy - AMG GTS or S63 AMG Coupe?

Hi guys,

I wonder what should be my next car, a true sports car or a more comfortable fast car?

A little bit about me, I'm turning soon 28 and currently I'm driving a 2013 Audi A8 which I really enjoyed so far but friends are saying it's an old man's car :)

The new options are the AMG GT S and S63 AMG Coupe (or even S500 Coupe if S63 isn't very big deal as a sports car).

Two opposite cars and my mind can't decide, the rational mind want the S Coupe while the emotional mind want the GT S.

I know that I should test drive both cars in order to know what suits me better but I'd also want to know what you guys are saying, maybe someone drove both for extended period of time and has better insight.

AMG GT S:
+ more fun to drive
+ unique feel
+ less depreciation over time
- uncomfortable on long journeys
- less practicality

S Coupe:
+ more car for the money
+ more practical and comfortable
+ easier to live with
- big depreciation over time
- heavy and not engaging to drive

Thanks!

I highly recommend taking both on an extended test drive before deciding. I have FL S63 on order coming some spring next year, so it's my choice. It really depends on whether you want a sports car or GT.

To sum it up, the S is like floating around in an Eames chair with a V8 rumble.

The GTS, on the other hand, is a fantasic driver's car, but AMG made the ride too stiff. IMO, it's a great weekend sports car for someone who wants a 911 alternate.

The GTS' interior is beautiful, but tight. The seats are touching the rear parcel shelf in my driving position.

The S' interior is also beautiful, but 10x more comfortable.

My vote goes to S coupe.
Especially considering you replacing A8.
You will get luxurios cruiser with sporty look, almost with no sacrifice in terms of luxury and comfort, just space in the second row.
While GT is another story, like sako97 descirbed.
You anyway look some 2 seater, so S coupe would be right choice IMO.
Go for S63 AMG coupe and you will have best from both sides.
Good luck. :wave4:

Can't agree more with @sako97. I have only driven the S-Class (S500 fully loaded, not the coupe) and the AMG GT (460 hp) but I absolutely fell in love with the GT. It's an unbelievable car. So much fun. So exciting. So good looking. Such great platform. If you get it in a less gaudy color like grey or black, you don't even stand out that much which is nice.

I didn't like the following things: little space, middle console, rough ride even in comfort, noise during long trips, and very wide track (difficult in parking garages, I wish it had surround view).

The facelift AMG GT with 522hp, rear wheel steer and full OPTs must be incredible. One of my dream cars for sure. It is the pick of the segment for me. 911 is boring and you see so many. F-Type is a POS in every way, even the R. R8 and Huracan are too much. The GT is so capable that the 460 hp never feel too much. I actually wished I had more.

Obviously drive both and then decide :)

The AMG GT is an amazing car. 911 buyers are being cheated by not knowing more about this car. It is a track car. It will wear you out fast as a daily driver. If it is your primary driver, you'll be looking to make a move soon. If it's a 2nd or 3rd, then you will have an incredible machine and love it.

I disagree with the S63 being more car for the money. The AMG GT is only the 2nd 100% AMG car, designed from the drawing board by AMG. It really is an amazing piece of engineering.

Agree with tenmb. S coupe is far more better car for daily use. Comfort.
I also think that he will be soon saturated with GT as daily drive.
But it depends on how much he push car , goes to the track.
And how much he want to keep car. If it's a longer period, I would go for S coupe, if it's shorter period, then maybe GT.
It's huge difference in terms of comfort.
S coupe will fit perfectly in long term while GT will be interesting in beginning but after you will lack comfort, my opinion.
And if you are not "track" person, then S coupe definitely.
If you are "track" person and often push car hard, then GT.:wave4:

One thing that one may wish to consider:

The AMG GT/GT S/GT C is a model line that defines the phrase "instant classic". It is an automobile that will not be reduced to the status of being an "old car". Very similar to Porsches' 911 series.

With the C217, it is quite possible that it will, like its' C216, C215, C140, C126 etc. ancestors, substantially depreciate rapidly before it may perhaps be "rediscovered" as a classic.

Get both :D
S ass daily driver, AMG GT for the weekends.

Or wait for the AMG GT 4 that's both cars in one.

OMG, so many replies and very, very good info. Thank you guys!

The GTs or S Coupe wont be my only car, currently in the city I tend to drive more my gf's Evoque because it's smaller. The A8 became the car for longer journeys.

I want to be able to drive the new car on longer trips because I simply like to drive, I'm not really into race tracks, actually never been to one :)

I sat in both cars and the differences are huge. The GTs windshield is so narrow that almost made me feel claustrophobic, but probably I will get used with that.

The big concern as some of you mentioned is the hard suspension that AMG put on this car.
I drove 911 GTS and felt ok for a sports car, but some people are saying that GTs is more stiffer.

Probably next week I will go to Munich to rent the GTs for a day or two. The S coupe is harder to find at the rental companies.
