5 Series (E39) What if the E39 had L shaped tail lamps?

The BMW E39 is the fourth generation of the BMW 5 Series. Body styles: E39 (sedan, wagon/touring). Predecessor: 5 Series (E34). Successor: 5 Series (E60). Production: 1995-2004.

I had that question and came up with this, do you like it?

It looks so much like an E34!

Before you ask, yes, I came up with that idea. Yes, I have to much time on my hands. Yes, I suck at editing pictures.

I am getting a bit sick of the constant L shape. They're awesome, but not on every BMW every generation! Time to let them rest for a bit, and here's hoping the next gen 3er at least won't have them. The G11 7er and G30 5er is enough for this gen!

I posted this without thinking of you, but come think about it, it's your opinion on BMW matters the one that matters the most to me haha

For the record, I'm by no means posting this like "I wish the E39 had come like this from factory". It was more about how much it looks like an E34; while looking arguably cool to me, the thing would have looked dated the day it came out of the factory.

I, in fact, find the squared tails on E36/E38/E39 rather nice looking. The E39 is probably one of the best looking BMWs ever.

I think BMW have proved that different shaped rear lights (Pre LCI 1er F20, 5er E60 and current Z4) can work, but it seems their now seen as a trademarks like the kidney grills and the hofmeister kink.

Yeah but BMW arguably already has the most trademarks out of any brand. The negative of that is that the cars become boring when you don't shake things up every once in a while.

Thanks for the kind words Sanpt :D I also think it looks a lot like the E34 in that chop. The 'round' greenhouse gives it away, though ;)

People always forget the E90 pre fl :D
But then again, these lights weren't particularly liked much. But IMO it's the graphics that ruin them, not the shape.

The E39 BMW (particularly the M5) is one where I would not have changed anything except maybe the wheels. The wheels weren't awful, but weren't my favorites either.

To be honest, I wonder from time to time what would the E39 sedan had looked like with the Touring´s rearlights, so I like this thread. I love the E39. My father owned and it will always have a special place in my heart. I have always argued with him which one looked better, the E34 or the E39. With the years, I have to give it to him. The E34 was simply spectacular for its time, much more aggressive than the E39, which was one of those vanilla 5er (probably the first vanilla 5er).

The good thing about this car was how it was completely transformed with the M-Pack. Kind of like the G11 7er. A bland looking car with standard bumpers that turns into something really really interesting with the right options. And not only that. Its interior was sooooo much better looking than anything else in the segment. I still remember that lovely way the trim went arounf the entire cabin and how it hid the tape player. Or how smart was the radio/AC controls. OR the spectacular M5 steering wheel.

Those years were gold for BMW. Winner designs that even today, 20 years later still look good on the roads.
