VW Confirms 10-Speed DSG and New 2.0TDI Motors (now with TWO turbos...)

"...and just after 6 lightning-quick, automatic upshifts the new Golf Mk8 GTi already hit 100 kph..."

Can't wait :D

This may very well be the final nail in the coffin for the manual transmission. At least for mainstream cars.

Only 20% ordered the new M3/M4 with manual transmission. The 911 GT3 being offered with AT only...
Nowadays cars have an ugly iPad glued to their dashboard and we'll soon see a VW Golf Justin Bieber Edition just like we had the Pink Floyd Golf 3 back in the 90's.
Some people are disgusted by the thought that they have to start a car with a real car key.
Vibrations through the steering wheel? Something should be wrong with my car!
No wonder all cars will be ATs really, really soon...
sissies

Too many gears and too many chances of a Hick up in the gear change! Imagined also the weight of that gearbox! Manual gear change by paddle shifts will take a long time!

HP Wars was replaced with Gear Wars...

10 is not enough.

Agreed. I want 15 at least.

The release of the twin-turbo 2.0TDI has been on the card for a while now and should give VAG the edge over it's main rivals though probably for only a brief period but I can't get my head around why they need to increase the gear count which ultimately makes the gearbox and gearing system much more complex and in turn less reliable when their is solutions out there offer infinite number of shifts with the re-writing of software.

Never mind that, try to imagine trying to remembering which gear you were in even being a paddle shift.

It's already a problem in the 8HP...
I'm always expecting 6 gears when I'm changing the gears myself but with time I got used to 7 gears too... 8 is still a new thing for me let alone 9 or 10...
even I'll choose AT mode all the way with these cars. It's not worth the effort and the 8HP is good enough changing gears itself. Not to mention it's not much fun clicking a stupid paddle.

I'm glad you mentioned having problems remember 8 gears as I too struggle but didn't want to be the only one. LOL

I generally leave mine in auto mode though I much prefer to do the shifting with the paddles if I'm overtaking instead of moving the stick into sport mode, another thing when in the M5 if the road is twisty I instantly start shifting with the paddles so maybe there's still a boy racer in me yet.

Hehe yeah the M5 is meant to be driven this way and it has "only" 7 gears :D
My main problem with 8HP is that I'm TOO used to 6 gears.
Maybe others are OK with it.

Are you advocating CVT? Gross...
