After seeing this new VW ID.Unyx 09 sedan on video, I was mighty impressed and it looks like the sleekest VW saloon in many years. I like the styling very much and it gives VW a much needed dynamic sedan to challenge the BMW i3 and Mercedes C Class EV models in China.

It would be great if they launched this sedan in other markets.

Volkswagen Debuts ID. Unyx 09 Electric Sedan in Beijing, Expect a Dual Motor Setup With 496 HP
The new Volkswagen ID. Unyx 09 is expected to feature the same drivetrain lineup as the ultra-efficient ID. Unyx 08 crossover

Volkswagen has arrived at this year’s Beijing Auto Show with a series of impressive EVs, among them the ID. Unyx 09. While official specs have yet to be confirmed, we expect this electric sedan to feature the same drivetrain lineup as the ultra-efficient ID. Unyx 08 crossover.

The latter is built on an 800V platform and is available with single-motor RWD and dual-motor AWD configurations. Meanwhile, battery options include an 82-kWh pack and a 95-kWh unit.

The former is good for 630 km (391 miles) of range, while the latter will give the 08 an autonomy of 730 km (453 miles). It’s safe to assume that the 09 sedan might go even further on a single charge, given its more aerodynamic shape. Performance-wise, the power should range from 230 kw (308 hp) to 370 kw (496 hp).

Built at the carmaker’s Anhui factory in Hefei (Anhui Province, China), the ID. Unyx 09 clearly features the same design language as the 08 crossover, hence the sleek exterior with its split light units and two elongated DRLs. There’s also an interesting black design element stretching from the front fender to the doors, while also being visually integrated into the headlights.

In terms of length, the ID. Unyx 09 measures over 5 meters (16.4 feet), which means it’s not going to be short on space inside. Other design highlights include the flush door handles (which we can only assume aren’t the pop-out type), thin taillight units, illuminated badges, and it even comes with a Face ID sensor in the B-pillar.

In terms of active safety, the 09 will feature an L2 assisted driving system with the Navigate-on-Autopilot (NOA) function operational on both highways and city streets.

“In 2026 alone, we will launch 13 new energy models, and by 2029, we will quickly expand the new energy product lineup covering pure electric, plug-in and extended range technologies. We combined German craftsmanship with local innovation to create new models for our customers with Chinese speed, leading technology and benchmark quality and safety,” stated VW brand China CEO, Robert Cisek.

Speaking of technology, the 09 will also boast an intelligent AI assistant and a high-performance computing platform capable of handling various driving tasks.

Now, we should mention that technically, the 09 is being hailed as a concept car, but we don’t expect many visual changes for when it does finally enter production, if any.

As for the interior, if the 08 crossover is anything to go by (and it should be), the 09 sedan should come with an airy cabin, featuring a trio of screens (a smaller gauge cluster and two massive infotainment displays), ambient lighting, and a flat bottom and top dual-spoke steering wheel. The design is very modern, which we’ve come to expect from car interiors aimed at the Chinese market.

I like it too. It’s very Chinese looking tho, clearly on purpose.

I am really impressed by much of this cars´ exterior design. The proportions of the body´s architecture foremostly. My major peeve is the glossy black inserted strake running from the lower frontlamp units, through the front fenders and into the front doors. Quite the highly annoying eyesore. Actually, it looks like afterthought s**t. I recall having read somewhere yesterday that this very element was a major subject of debate following the presentation and that "corrective options" are being discussed. Either (less likely) deletion or (more likely) finished in body color.

As I said before, I really like its originality, its cool look; I'd have it without hesitation. It revives the "CC" vibe (I love the black stripe).

Passat CC is a VW unicorn. I love it in the phoenix colour.

Very, very excellent proportions. Minimal overhang with a reasonable dash-to-axle ratio and flat hood give it a very well balanced look.

The abrupt angularity of the "A-pillars intruding into the siderails roof surfacing" harkens back to many automobiles of yore. Mid-1970's through 1980' Rovers or the Citröen XM, for example, come to mind. In the case of the ID.UNYX 09, this is clearly an indication of its relationship with the new Xpeng P7 sedan.

Undecided as to whether I like it. I certainly prefer the curvaceous flow of that element on the, for example. ID.CODE concept-and most other cars for that matter.
