5 Series (F10) UPDATED World premiere: BMW 5 Series passes first crash test using brake intervention

The BMW F10 is the sixth generation of the BMW 5 Series, manufactured for model years 2010–2017. Body styles: 4-door sedan/saloon (F10), 5-door estate/wagon (F11), 5-door fastback (F07), marketed as "Gran Turismo", and 4-door long wheelbase sedan (F18), sold only in China and the Middle East. Production: 2010–2017
LOL, yeah right. BMW was, is and WILL ALWAYS BE the technology wizard in the car industry. I don't know what you're talking about as usual.
I was saying MB is the safety king. Nothing more, nothing less.

I can understand why you prefer the brand of BMW, it is an exceptional company with brilliant products and engineering but I don't understand yours belief that the world revolves around BMW and only them, especially with your lack of factual knowledge. No company and I mean none has lead the industry with more advancements in technology than Mercedes.

Comments

Adult occupant
The passenger compartment remained stable in the frontal impact. Dummy readings indicated good protection of the knees and femurs of both the driver and front seat passenger. BMW were able to demonstrate that occupants of different sizes, and those sat in different positions, would be similarly well protected. Maximum points were scored in the side barrier test. In the more severe side pole impact, the head and pelvis were well protected, the chest and abdomen adequately so. Good protection was provided against whiplash injuries in the event of a rear impact.

Child occupant
Based on dummy readings in the dynamic tests, the 5 series was awarded maximum points for protection of the 3 year dummy in the frontal and side impacts. Forward movement of the dummy's head was not excessive in the frontal impact and both the 3 year and 18 month dummies were properly contained by their respective child restraints in the side impact. The passenger airbag can be disabled to allow a rearward facing child restraint to be used in that seating position. However, information provided to the driver regarding the status of the airbag is not sufficiently clear. A permanently attached label warns clearly of the dangers of using a rearward facing restraint in the passenger seat without first disabling the airbag.

Pedestrian
The 5 series is fitted with an 'active bonnet'. When a pedestrian is struck, actuators lift all four corners of the bonnet away from hard structures underneath. This creates more space to absorb the energy of a struck pedestrian, lowering injury values. The bonnet has scored maximum points in the areas likely to be struck by the head of a child and has scored very highly in those areas likely to be struck by an adult. The front edge of the bonnet did not score any points for the protection provided to pedestrians' legs but the bumper scored maximum points.

Safety assist
Electronic Stability Control is standard equipment on the 5 series, together with a driver-set speed limitation device. A seatbelt reminder system is also standard equipment and covers all seating positions.

No company and I mean none has lead the industry with more advancements in technology than Mercedes.

That's a bit of a loose statement. With regards to safety you could argue that Merc and Volvo are industry leaders because no other manufacturer have done what they have done. Other than that No one is an industry leader in vehicle technology advancement.

BMW sure have over the past few years built amazing engines and various other technologies and they have the awards to prove it, but I'm afraid thats it. :usa7uh:

I think if you do a search you will find that Mercedes had introduced more firsts on it's flagship model S-class than any other manufacturer. I'm not talking about how makes the best this or tge best that, purely technology introductions to production cars, regardless if it's safety or what ever.

You guys need to discuss this in another thread. This one is about the 5 series NCAP results and nothing else. Thanks everybody!

Best regards,

I've given up trying.......

When I post here on this forum, my world INDEED revolves around BMW and only BMW. I don't really care about much else, follow Porsche because I like them, Mercedes because the are BMW's arch rival and I feel nothing but disgust towards everything concerning VAG minus Porsche (and in 10 years Porsche too, when the share 80% with a Skoda and Audi and Seat)

I've quite a few other passions, but here I talk about BMW and how much better they are than any other car.
Have a good day for the rest :)

BTW, Footie, I should have been more clear: BMW was the first car company in the world that used microchips in a car. I meant computer tech, in which they are still leading.

BTW, I drove the 550i today .... Awesome! Coming from me you have to take it to the bank. That 360 degree camera is off the richter scale. Power and handling ... excellent. I'm going back on Saturday for more ... It can supposedly park itself, it doesn't have to, I like it. Wish it were a tad big bigger but that's it. The 'Designo' style interior rocks :)

Thanks for the info. :t-cheers:
Apart from being BMW's most praised model currently, you drove the 'daddy'! The V8 TT is a masterpiece:t-drive:

Does any other brand also have this technology or heading towards it ?

Self parking tech you mean?
I drove a Passat CC with parking tech before any model from BMW had it. Granted, the BMW parking tech is more technical and it even moves the car itself (something you have to do yourself in a VW) but it's nothing new really...

Gboy, awesome dude, awesome. I've never even seen the 550i yet, since that's a rare car in Europe. 550i is pretty standard in the U.S, but a 520d with half the power and half the engine is the standard over here, and one's lucky if he owns a 535i :)

Where the heck are those cameras though? The display on the NAV makes it appear to be satellite linked ... really cool looking. You will never scrape a tire in this puppy. I drove the 750i too BTW :)

After seeing one close up today, I have a new class favorite...the 2011 BMW 5-Series. What a gorgeous car. Though not perfect, there is still too much of an elongated look up front, but it isn't nearly as bad as the 7-Series LWB. But man is this car good looking. I saw a 535i out on a test drive from the dealer around the corner from me. The M pack is going to be all the eyes can take on this one, stunning. Are the front seats the same as in the 7-Series?

It's pretty much a baby 7, just a tad too small... more like a 4-Series but nice nonetheless.
