At the second annual “Ferrari Leggenda e Passione” auction event that will be held on May 18, 2008 in Milan, Italy, RM Auctions in association with Sotheby will attempt to sell a pair of ultra-rare Ferrari 250 California Spyders. Regarded as one of the most valuable of all the road-going Ferrari models, less than 100 California Spyders were produced between 1957 and 1962 in a variety of specifications. The examples on offer – a 1958 LWB covered headlamp version (s/n 0923GT) finished in classic Rosso red, and a 1961 SWB version (s/n 2377GT) with coachwork finished in original Nero black – are estimated to fetch something between $4,000,000 - $6,000,000 USD.

Lost Ferrari 250 SWB California Spyder owned by Alain Delon sells for $19M
Found at French barn last year
A very rare Ferrari 250 SWB California Spyderfrom 1961 has been sold for $18.5M (16.3M EUR) including taxes at Artcurial's Retromobile sale in Paris, France.

The machine is one of only 37 ever produced and was previously owned by actors Gerard Blain and Alain Delon. Lost for almost 40 years by collectors, the car was found at a French barn along with 59 other exclusive retro cars.

Selling for $18.5M (16.3M EUR), the Ferrari becomes the fifth most expensive vehicle ever sold. Delon sold it and it changed hands several time only to be taken from Jacques Baillon in 1971. For a very long time it was considered lost until it was discovered in December last year by Baillon’s grandchildren.

Extraordinary. As much as love love the Califonia Spider, this price is unjustifiable.

Over the past few years since the GFC, we have seen record prices paid for important art, classic cars, realestate, antiques and rare wine etc etc.

I can't help thinking that this crazy spending is unsustainable ......many of these things are going to lose much of their financial value when the big financial correction finally hits ..........and believe me, it's coming.

I saw the video of this farm with the finding of this 250 SWB Spider and some other amazing lost classics. Its a shame to see some of these classics been so discarded and in terrible condition yet worth such a packet. If the owner had given some love and care for these cars they would be hugely more valuable today.
