TOKYO (Reuters) - Toyota Motor Corp. said on Wednesday it is recalling 11,000 Lexus cars in Japan and 46,000 overseas to fix a faulty seat belt part.

Toyota will replace seat belts in both front seats, which can become jammed inside the holding due to a faulty part, it said.

The affected cars are Lexus GS and IS sedans.

No accidents have been reported due to the defect, it said.

Toyota, close to overtaking General Motors Corp. as the world's No.1 seller of automobiles, has sold 15,000 Lexus GS and IS in Japan since it ushered in the 16-year-old Lexus brand to its home market in August 2005 in what it said is a major step toward taking on top luxury marques everywhere else.

It did not disclose estimated recall costs.

This can't do much good to Lexus's reputation!

Doesn't look like a huge number of cars have been sold in Japan since launch!

Mercedes recalls the R-Class and just for good measure (and to shut up the Lexus fanatics) Lexus has one a few days later. How wonderfully splendid.

A stupid mistake and Lexus deserves a kick in the head for it. Now, let's see how the vaunted Lexus customer service people deal with it.

I hope noone gets angry at me again when i say Toyota-Lexus instead of Lexus when i refer to them. Everyone knows that it's the same company underneath.;)

Shock horror - the Lexus is not perfect afterall ;)

The truth is though, year after year, the Japanese still top the consumer satisfaction reports.

Not at all...just like Audi is really VW with a bit of extra walnut and aluminium trim...

Seriously, this is embarassing for Lexus. It could be bad, if there was an accident, the car caught fire and the seatbelt would not unlock. But such a scenario is unlikely.
