Lexus LFR GT3 Spied for the first time

Looks like the LFR GT3 was spied for the first time testing at Fuji.

Based on the Toyota GR GT3 Concept, which was later rebranded to Lexus GT3 Concept for internal dealer meetings.

Production model expected to be powered by LC-F's TTV8 plus hybrid system.

Latest render's out of BestCar for the LFR, this GT3-derived super-sports car is going to be amazing. Visually a Lexus AMG GT, with it's extremely long deck.

Rumoured to start around the 200k-250k mark, utilize the TT-V8 from the cancelled LC-F program with ~720hp and electric motors for a total around ~950hp.

It's a V8 hybrid supercar made by Toyota and Lexus and it will be show next year from what i heard.

It will be Race version and road version will be with Lexus badge.

They track test the car for a long time now, i hope it's nearly ready.

Little backstory... the LC-F which started development in 2018 with it's twin-turbo V8 powertrain, Lexus started targeting higher hp numbers and thus started converting the LC-F into a rear-transaxle sports car, but the rumours are the platform was deemed too compromised.

Stuck in a cycle of adding more power -> requiring more chassis strengthening -> weight going up and coinciding with a rise in popularity of GT3 racing, Lexus officially canned the LC-F in 2020 (note, seems they canned the facelift too, as we never got the revised taillights from that spyshot taken a few years ago)

Insider @Carmaker1 idk if he's still active here made a note on Lexus Enthusiast forum that the twin-turbo V8 was still in development and being showcased internally in 2021 despite the LC-Fs cancellation, and then a few months later Toyota showcased the "GR GT3" concept. And then tacked on a Lexus badge to show dealers.

The R&D from the LC-F, primarily the twin-turbo V8 in development since 2018 got pushed into the next-gen GT3 project, which we don't know if will be called LFR or LFA in the road going form. But this is a front-mid super car developed for racing first and road-car second, similar formula as the GR Yaris.

On an off-topic note, the GA-L platform the LC500 rides on was designed to support a twin-turbo V8 from the getgo, so the fact that Lexus engineers found the LC-F unfit as a competitive sports car is quite ironic. This platform would've launched the 5th-gen GS-F first with a twin turbo V8, but the GS got cancelled and turned into 2nd gen Toyota Mirai, LS-F was also planned but cancelled before any major development happened, and the LF-1 Limitless Concept was supposed to be the last saving grace for this platform and V8 but was canned when the pandemic hit. Failure of a platform, and it's compromises is unfortunately why we never saw a next-gen IS on this platform.

But hey, we'll see this V8 that's been in development for over 6 years now in an exclusive mid-front engine supercar.
 
Is the idea here to use NA V8 for the GT3 racer and twin turbo V8 for the road going version? Kind of like the AMG recipe?
 
Clearly a turbo and with that sound, a V8. I can't wait to see this. Lexus, a zombie brand, makes you wait so many years for any type of excitement. This proves they still have a pulse.

Exciting stuff for sure, if only they could commit to a next-generation of RWD ICE products as well.. seems up in the air with the delays of EV, but looks like the current IS/LS lineup will just soldier with further product updates/styling changes until EV replacements

And those are already old as dirt, especially the IS and RC. LS and LC are getting crust too but still look the part.

Man, did they fudge up with the GA-L platform.

On a lighter note, I saw a Nori Green over Caramel interior LC convertible. Gosh, it was bite-the-back-of-your-hand puuuurrrty.

Lexus is set to launch a new V8-engined supercar as a rival to the likes of the Aston Martin Vantage and Mercedes-AMG GT and a spiritual successor to the legendary LFA.

Parent company Toyota’s hardcore GT3 GR concept car, revealed in 2022, has now evolved into a prototype that has been spotted running at Spa-Francorchamps, and its Gazoo Racing motorsport division is expected to have it ready for top-flight competition – including the Le Mans 24 Hours – in 2026.

FIA homologation rules dictate that any GT3 racer shares its basic body design with a related road car, so a toned-down version of the GT3 GR is expected in showrooms within the next two years.

Toyota has previously said that it would continue “commercialising motorsports cars rather than simply adapting production vehicles for use in motorsports”, as it did with the rally-honed GR Yaris hot hatchback.

The road-going GT3 GR is likely to wear a Lexus badge, rather than a Toyota one, in keeping with the premium brand’s history of large-engined sports cars, including the LFA, LC 500 and RC F.

The prototype’s soundtrack is unmistakably that of a highly strung V8 (which reportedly breathes through two turbos) and the road car – possibly called LFR – is expected to share that unit but with the addition of hybrid assistance.

No specifications of the racer have yet been released, but the GT3 regulations are relatively flexible, with cars producing roughly 500-600bhp and weighing no more than 1300kg. Aston Martin, BMW, Ferrari, Ford, Lamborghini, Lexus, McLaren, Mercedes-AMG and Porsche all currently sell GT3 customer cars.

Toyota recently announced – alongside allies Mazda and Subaru – plans to “revolutionise” the packaging of the internal combustion engine, doubling down on its belief that ICE technology will continue to play a role for cars in the future, despite the wider global shift to electric cars.

Toyota has long been vocal about the potential for sports cars in particular to benefit from continued ICE development, investing heavily in sustainable fuel development and even partnering with Yamaha to create a hydrogen-compatible 5.0-litre V8 – which could be deployed in the new sports car.

Gazoo Racing boss Masahito Watanabe recently told Autocar that Toyota is pursuing a “multi-pathway” approach for sports cars, rather than investing in all-out electrification. “We still think the internal combustion engine has some potential, and as we do so, we will of course be trying to comply with all the applicable rules according to the regions in each country,” he said.

“But we don’t want to give up. It’s not over just yet, because if you look at the internal combustion engine, there’s still hydrogen combustion that can be a part of that zero-emission line-up. So I think that’s going to continue.”
Lexus has retired its RC and LC coupés in Europe and hasn’t officially commented on plans for any replacements, although the outlandish Electrified Sport concept that it revealed in 2021 emphasises its continued commitment to performance cars.

That concept – which is due to reach production by the end of the decade – is electric, rather than V8-powered, but has been confirmed to share its carbonfibre monocoque underpinnings with Toyota’s GR GT3 concept and has a similar cab-rearward silhouette, which suggests the possibility for Lexus to offer two closely related supercars – based on the same chassis but using totally different powertrains – within the next five years.

Autocar cooking with pure speculation here, by the looks of it.
Why would you expect the road version to have up to 600 hp and be around 1300 kg? Just because those are the typical specs for GT3 cars doesn't mean the road car can't have 700 hp and 1500 kg.
 
It takes Lexus 10 years to come up with a truly special car. I just hope it's worth the wait.

So as I see it - more likely an LFA successor than LC500 replacement? Or not?
