Vs Top Gear: Quattroporte Sport GT vs. S500 vs. S8

Thanx for the scannings!

The S8 looks so mad, as always. That car is insane. I still don't know what's so special about Quattroporte. It looks nothing special. I've seen a lot of them here in my town. You hardly even notice that it's a special car, for example as you do with the S8 and S600. I find the porpotions very strange, and to me that is a vary overrated car. The only car I would have chosen it over from the Germans, is the 7-series. I still think the A8/S8 and the S-class are the most beautiful cars in the segment.

Well to each his own Audiholic... I get what you mean when you said the QP has very strange proportions, it is a very organic shape. Unlike what we're used to in the S8 or the S600, even. :usa7uh:

My personal choice in this comparo is the S8 - it definitely combines the best of both worlds (Italian feistiness, German quality) and would make for a very interesting comparo with the upcoming automatic Quattroporte.

Great article James, thanks for posting :usa7uh:

I love the comment about the Quattroporte, "We love it like a mistress" :D As the article points out the Quattroporte is easily the best "sports car" but really the most useless as a luxury saloon. I agree with you, I think the S8 offers the best of both worlds, as a result It is also my choice.

Top Gear is clearly in love with the QP. No question about that. I've heard nothing but good things from them about the QP (bar the gearbox) because they like its style and panache. But they are not practical. For daily-driving you'll constantly have to worry about whether your clutch would fry, or whether you're changing gears at the right time, or whether you've applied enough throttle, etc... It's definitely not a relaxing driving experience like a luxury sedan should offer. It's a thoroughbred sports sedan and I'd expect few would apply to the QP's rather unique characteristics.

The amazing part is the S8 is also the cheapest in this bunch.

In every part of the world, prices vary considerably. Take Singapore - the S8 is SGD450,000 (estimated), the Sport GT just SGD400,000 and the S500 SGD 428,000.

thanks mirage.
the maserati is a nice car and so are the rest but with the maserati you get so much more exclusivity and it just seem like it is in a different leauge than the other two. Not in perfomance ways but others. My dad has been seeing alot of quattroporte's around recently and he has fallen in love with them so much that hes going to the maserati dealer and is toolin with the thought of buying a used one. Unfortualnly my mom is not so happy about this whole plan:confused:

No problem Rudy. :usa7uh:

You're right. The Quattroporte appeals in ways which are beyond numbers, figures and facts. Nevertheless it is still quite an acquired taste.

That's great, is your dad interested in auto or DuoSelect? If I'm not wrong he doesn't spend money on cars now... After the test drive, I'm quite sure he'll place an order. :D If he chooses DS though, beware of maintenance headaches and less-than-smooth delivery in city driving. It's the sportier option, but not necessarily the best.

still concerning price the idea that a midrange S500 is AS expesive as a QP or S8 is pretty mindblowing

right now he just wants to look because he has never owned nice cars because he finds them a waste and so on but this car really appeals to him. I mean currently we own a ford f 150 and a vw jetta so this would be a big step for him if he actually thinks about doing it. Im not sure what kind of transmission he would want though but one thing he needs in a car is a manual so im sure he would opt for the DS. I was trying to explain the whole f1 style paddle shifter thing to him which he thought was cool. Im just going to give him a little room to think and see what happens.

That's true. The fact that Mercedes expects the S600 and above to be in Bentley territory, which basically puts the S-Class in a pedestal way higher than its other models.

Thanks Mirage

which is good and bad at the same time
well not really, there always exist a number X of people willing to pay, but aiming that high has not been merc's strongest point as of late, with the maybach and the luxo van R

I love the new S-Class with the AMG pack but without it I'm not to thrilled with it.The Quattroporte GT is rather attractive, but the S8 is perfection to me!

Well it has always worked for the S time and again... Both the Maybach and the R didn't do as well because they had no following/backing from previous years that they could rely on, IMO.

I agree. :usa7uh:

I read this article a little while back in the bookstore. Love it. I'd be torn between the S8 and Quattroporte myself, and I agree with those that say that S8 offers a good mix of the other two. Still though I think I'd go with the Quattroporte Sport GT, it has character and soul no German car can match. Plus it is truly exclusive, a rare treat here in the U.S.

Does anyone know if the S8 has limited production as well?

I've only seen 2 S8 in the states and 1 was at the dealer!

I highly doubt that someone considering a S8 would consider buying a S500!:t-crazy2:It doesn't have a hint of sport in it's design, maybe a S63, Quattroporte, and possibly a
Super 8.

point for point, the S fails, just for the fact of the otehr 2 being sporty flagships and it being a regular mdiragne

Mercedes soemtimes should reconsider its folie des grandeur
